TBRO Review

From the Editor, Dean Webb: dplist(at-a-domain-named)deep-purple.com
I hate getting sick. One bright side is that I get time to just sit and
listen to music. Since I just got some CD's, I thought I'd go through them
and let you know how I liked them. The first was the soundtrack from
"Muppets From Space." If you like Glenn Hughes, you'll probably like this
funk-fest. OTOH, if you can't stand soul music, best to steer clear of
this one. The second, substantially more on-topic selection was "Night of
the Living Dregs" from the Dixie Dregs. This CD is great, but I gotta warn
you: it's *not* Deep Purple. Not at all. More like Jeff Beck solo or Al
DiMeola. This is *fusion*, not rock. That said, it's got some great riffs,
textures, and sounds. I particularly liked the opening track, "Punk
Sandwich". If you're a guitar fan first and a rock fan second, this is a
great addition to your library, as Steve Morse does a swell job. If you
are a completist for everything DP-related, you probably won't regret
adding this to your collection.
The other CD I picked up was DP's TBRO. I finally own all DP studio CDs
so far. Yay! My review follows in the DPD below...
"One man's meat is some guy's aching butt..."

Hello,
just wanted to announce two new pages I created.
First a small tribute to the A.Band.On Tour from my pov

some pictures and mp3s, unfortunately I got a bit carried away so the
page takes a while to load.
Second I compiled a more or less complete overview of available
unofficial Deep Purple live recordings, including but not limited to
bootlegs.

My tribute to the Pictured Within Tour is still online in case you
haven't seen it yet

No. None of these are DPAS releases. RAH is Eagle Records in Europe and
Spitfire Records in the USA. "Before I Forget" is on Purple Records
(DPAS-Simon is in charge there (I think?) so there's the only DPAS
connection) and the three Mk.I albums is on EMI in Europe. We have no info
on if Rhino will release these Mk.I remasters in the USA like they did
with
the Mk.II remasters. DPAS is selling all these releases, that's why the
news came from them.
BTW, the track list for the RAH album is up on our site now:

>Why not through the DP online store?
I'm not 100% sure but I think the online store will have most of these
releases. The PAL "Total Abandon" DVD will also arrive in the online store
around christmas and the NTSC version early next year.

According to Roger Glover in the DP newsgroup, "Blackers" is a record
company man. I guess that should end the debate.

The RAH CD, video and DVD is not a DPAS release only. They're just having
copies for sale as usual.
The record company is called Eagle Rock Entertainment. And yes, it will be
available in the online store as well, according to their main man, Ed
Janx.

I remember somebody from the "Black Adder" series that looked like RB, or
Mr. Bean! Hey
RB does resemble Mr. Bean. But I'm sure they drive different cars..

Speaking of Baldrick, I noticed that everyone in the band is listed

recommend
this album to you especially,i have seen you frequent the SABBATH list..I

available at CDNOW for $6 *MORE* than at Amazon! If you can find a cheaper

Subject: Eighth Star
I finally got a copy of Eighth Star a few days ago. Most of it is
too
R&Bish for me; the album definitely needs work (and of course it wouldn't
be called Eighth Star if it ever saw the light of day). However, the one
big, huge, MAJOR exception is the first track, "Not the Same."
It's difficult to describe just how much (at-a-domain-named)$$ this song kicks. If
you're a fan of progressive/power metal or guitar oriented HR/HM, you HAVE
to hear this song. It pretty much sits right in the middle of the overlap
area of the aforementioned subgenres, and really has to be heard to be
believed. If you're a body-pierced Korn freak who avoids post-Ozzy
Sabbath
with the fervor of a Southern Baptist, uh, never mind. Forbidden thoughts
lie down this path.
(I first wrote this for the Black Sabbath list, so that last sentence
probably doesn't apply here. If you do like Korn and their lot; well, my
condolences :); but you obviously have SOME taste. I mean, you're on this
list...)
--T.J.
{Dean "Basking in the glow of adulation" Webb: We *do* seem to have a more
well-behaved crowd around here... very little hooliganism or knife
throwing. Could it be because we pretty much respect all the DP singers or
because Big Ian is the front man again, and has been for quite some time?
I could imagine things getting interesting if Gillan quit and Dio came on
board or something like that...}

Subject: Blackmore about other guitarists (1996)
Hi all!
I found the Blackmore interview from 1996, where he says he likes some
other guitarists. I'm sorry I haven't got the time to write more, just the
names of the guitarists and some bands he mentions:
"The first band I really liked was The Who." "So I was taken with Pete
Townshend saying to keep it simple, and I began to write melodic lines
that
were simple enough that the postman could play whatever I played [laughs]"
"I was really into people like Wes Montgomery and Les Paul"
"I have to say, Robert Fripp is incredible"
"Little Jim - Pagey - was doing a lot of rock and roll guitar sessions. He
had a lot of confidence, whereas I lacked confidence. I used to say "Oh,
no, I can't do that," knowing full well that I probably could do it. Big
Jim - Sullivan - was a brilliant reader and could play anything, so the
two
of them had the marked cornered. I didn't do as many sessions, but I was
quite happy to be in my own little world, starving [laughs]."
"Yngwie [Malmsteen] is very good."
"I stole from Hendrix, Page stole from everybody - a lot - he has a great
record collection."
"Jeff Beck is my idol"
"Frank Zappa's another one. To quote someone, he's dearly missed."
"I do think Van Halen reinvented the guitar."
"I was a big fan of his [Steve Morse] when he was in the Dixie Dregs."
"Joe's [Satriani] a great guitar player, but not my style."
And somewhere he says: "I think that a lot of people expect me to put
other
guitarists down."
I felt I should mark those "laughs", as you probably didn't even think he
sometimes laughs!
That's it, probably my last post in 1999. Merry christmas and a happy new
year to all of you purple people!
Heikki
{Dean "Well, I'll be!" Webb: Shut my mouth and darn my cats! I guess RB
has the undeserved reputation of being a guitarist-basher! (Although the
compliment on Pagey's record collection is a bit backhanded...) RB,
however, is definitely a *guitar* basher, although not of late.}

Compuserve made it. You'll find it at:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/timjh/bandomat.htm. I know
you're
gonna love this one, Dean...
--T.J.
{Dean: THIS RULES!!! I was tripping out totally on some of the
combinations that *might have been*. One had Dio on vocals, Blackmore and
Iommi on twin leads, Geezer Butler on Bass, Bill Ward on Drums and Don
Airey on Keyboards. Technically, that *would* be a viable incarnation of
Black Sabbath. Should I get on the phone to those guys and pitch the plan?
BTW, If I wanted to add to the code and reproduce it at my site, would
that be OK with your friend?}

Review of "The Battle Rages On" by Dean Webb
Folks, this is another great album from Rainbow! This tme, Ian Gillan
replaces Joe Lynn Turner (from Rainbow's last, "Slaves & Masters") and
rejoins former DP bandmates Blackmore, Glover, Lord, and Paice on a smash
set.
Wait a minute... the label says *DEEP PURPLE* on it... Oh. Hm. That's
odd. It sure *sounds* like a Rainbow album. The first track, "The Battle
Rages On" sure starts out like a Rainbow CD. "Lick it Up" sounds like
"Tight Squeeze". "Anya" is unique, I'll grant, although I like it better
played faster in concert. "Talk About Love" has a vocal straight out of
Gillan in 1980, but a guitar part direct from "Midtown Tunnel Vision" off
of Rainbow's Difficult to Cure. "Time to Kill" is actually an updated
cover of "Call of the Wild", so I guess it's now the second song to sound
like DP. "Ramshackle Man" is great, and is the third DP song. "A Twist in
the Tale" goes back to Rainbow, this time copying "Fire Dance" from Bent
Out of Shape. "Nasty Piece of Work" is a variation on more
Difficult-to-Cure-era Rainbow, with a Scarabus-era Gillan vocal.
"Solitaire" came from an Ozzy record, right? Sure sounds like it... sounds
like Ian Anderson pitched in a hand on the writing, too. The album closes
with "Tight Squeeze", uh, I mean "One Man's Meat" which sounds a whole lot
like, well, "Tight Squeeze" from Straight Between the Eyes. Again. Fancy
picking the same song to pinch twice on one CD...
So what's the body count? 6 Rainbow tracks, 3 DP tracks, and one
Ozzy/Jethro Tull cover. There's some good stuff in there, but it's obvious
the Mk2 Re-Reunion really hadn't jelled at the time of recording (not that
it would ever jel...) and the rifts in the band are obvious. Blackmore is
the boss of the music writing and Gillan gets back at him through the
vocals. The cover art is appealingly ironic, depicting a two-headed dragon
fighting itself. I wonder which head was Blackmore's and which one was
Gillan's? Unlike WDWTWA, which really does stay together throughout as a
DP piece and not a bunch of solo careers happening at the same time, TBRO
is a bunch of solo careers happening at the same time without the same
excitement that's on CTTB. When I go back to this CD, it'll be to pick a
few tracks and put them on a tape. The title track is a possibility, but
only after I put on "Ramshackle Man", "Twist in the Tale", and "One Man's
Meat." This CD is slightly more useful than Slaves & Masters, but not by
much, I'm afraid. I give it a 5 out of 10 and am glad Morse came along.
