From the Editor, Dean Webb: dplist(at-a-domain-named)deep-purple.com

Sorry for the lateness of the issue, but stuff happened during my normal
free time... had to build out a few computers, do some research, play Age
of Kings, sleep, stuff like that. Well, I at least got some time now to
put a DPD together, so here goes...

OK, got some scattershooting I'd like to offer up for your consideration,
then the rest of the digest is yours...

First, why is it that on the DP Mk3 albums and the first Rainbow LP that
Blackmore just picks on his guitar, when in concerts of the same time
frame he plays chords where he was just picking? Consider "You Fool No
One." In the studio, it's got a thin intro. In concert, it's a
riffslinger. Why the studio/concert discrepancy of this time period?

Second, I was listening to a tape recently where I put on a few numbers
from Slaves & Masters. I forgot I had them on there, and when they started
off, I could almost swear they were Rainbow tunes. Then I recognized them
and realized they were... ;-) Seriously, it's amazing how much control
Blackmore had over the DP sound at the time. Shame he had to be such a
control freak, but I guess he felt entitled to it. He *IS* Ritchie
Blackmore, after all... then again, it was also Deep Purple. My feeling is
that when Blackmore decided he was the most important creative influence
in the band, the band suffered greatly. Pity...

Third, I just ordered TBRO and Night of the Living Dregs. Should be here
soon for my reviewing pleasure. I also ordered the soundtrack for "Muppets
From Space", because I like the *FONK* every now and then... probably
explains why I dig Glenn Hughes, too...

Fourth, I updated the reviews and fan stuff section of the DPD website. I
added a spot for "Total Abandon", so I'd like to see more reviews for it.
HEck, more reviews for ALL the records would be welcome. If you're old or
new and are looking ot make your first post or one of many, send in an
album review! Put down your opinions on the disc and rate it from 1-10,
with a 1 meaning the band should NEVER have put their names on the final
product, 5 meaning it's OK as far as DP stuff goes, and 10 meaning
***DUDE!!! IT IS THE MOSTEST AWESOMEST ALBUM, EVER!!!*** (Or at least one
of them.) Good reviews should steer people toward the album, and bad
reviews should help collectors put it in perspective. I know I've used
reviews to guide my purchases, and they haven't let me down.

Last of all, I'd like to wish all of you a joyous holiday season of your
choice. If you're religious, may you have ample time to contemplate on
your faith and edify yourself therewith. If you're not religious, may you
have some good vacation time and enjoy the parties of the season. For all
of you, may you have a safe, happy, and PURPLE new year!

(Opening Riff for "Wring That Neck"...)

Greetings,

Boy, oh! boy the wig thing has made quite a STINK eh! I've had my say
and won't comment any more on the subject. But reading the last digest,
I think it just might be ON now. DING! Round 1.....................
It's funny all of us are grown men, (OK, most of us are grown men) and
were debating the issue that the Greatest Rock Guitarist of our time
wears a ? you know I won't even say it. If it's not over I hope it is
A.S.A.P.!!!! Now here's I think of the current RB situation.

First RB has already said something about a 3rd BN LP. but who's to
say. If there is I say he will have gotten it all out of his system.
Besides the only singer that has last more than 3 studio LP's is Ian
Gillan.
And we all know he feels about him. So Candice will have more time to
clean the house!! in the near future. Hey! It took BALLS to do what he
did with BN. It was a huge risk to do what he did. The fact that he did
what he wanted to do in his heart, is what I admire about him. For many
yrs
I was very critical of him not doing more Acoustic stuff. And boy! did
he come through, Both BN CD's are very good Musically. Rock is in his
blood and he will ROCK AGAIN!!! What I want him to do is, Do a LP with
his son. done right it could be pretty cool. The last thing I want is
him back in DP as I said before, It would be THE END of DP as we know
it.
Does anyone else have any thoughts about a RB & Son Project ?

"Your the only who can never see the sun, because it don't shine
nightly..........

 Have a safe holiday, everyone

He admires him. He first heard him back in 81 and got drunk because he'd
just realised that there would always be players that could blow him away,
or words to that effect. Nice move of RB, IMO.

I don't know why you say that Ritchie slams about every other guitar
player. I recall him speaking very appreciatevely (at different times)
about Jim Sallivan, Albert Lee, Jimmy Hendrix, Tommy Bolin, and recently
about Steve Morse and Eric Johnson. One of the guitar mags had a double
feature on SM/RB in 96 and both appraised each other. Interesting, that
neither of them knew the the interviews would apper side by side in the
same issue.

{My sources were various comments TMIB made about being able to "wipe the
floor" with most guitar players around... he's also been critical of
Hendrix (which shocked me, I don't know if he was being serious at the
time) and all the Eddie Van Halen clones. Jim Sullivan and Albert Lee are
two he praises most frequently, but he seems to be rather hard on just
about everyone else. Perhaps "slam" is too hard a word... if so, mea
culpa!}

I agree with Nick. This picture looks ALOT like Mr. Blackmore. Except
that
the chap in said photo is
too tall. Taller than Gillan! I don't think so. Someone, was it Dean?,

Makes sense..

I've seen an interview (in Guitar World, Guitar Magazine or something like
that) where TMIB says he likes Dixie Dregs and has nothing against Steve.
I'll try to find that interview.

One more thing about Purple bootlegs. Does mr Payne's comment mean that
the
plans of releasing better and historically interesting bootlegs officially
through DPAS won't materialize? Robert Fripp does wonders with old King
Crimson material, who could do the same with Purple?

Heikki

{I would LOVE the interviews with Blackmore on Morse and Morse on
Blackmore. Send them in if you can. Regarding the bootlegs, I would hope
the DPAS continues to dust off and polish up the better boots for us. I
trust the DPAS stamp and look to it as a sign of quality. Maybe Roger
Glover and Robert Fripp could compare notes on the whole thing...

Which makes me wonder... what would have been different had Fripp been the
guitarist for DP and Blackmore the King Crimson axeman... interesting,
no?}

Subject: Remember Lennon

Hello people!

I'm just writing to tell you all that today is the 19th anniversary of the
tragic day when John Lennon was shot dead. Why not put on one of his
albums
and remember this great creator of great music...

Daniel

-------------------------------------------------------------------

[J] 1980
John Lennon is shot to death. [Note: In the UK it is Dec. 9].
John and Yoko arrive at the Dakota apartments, where they live, at
approximately 10:50 pm EST. Returning from a night in the
recording studio, they step out of their limo and walk towards the
building entrance, John walking ahead of Yoko. A man's voice calls
out, "Mr. Lennon?"	The speaker, a deranged 'fan', fires five
bullets into John's back and arm. Police arrive within two minutes
and determine that there is no time to wait for an ambulance; they
put John in their car and carry him to St. Luke's Roosevelt
Hospital, where he is declared dead at 11:07 pm. [Note: the name
of John's killer has been intentionally omitted. After John's
death, Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono made a simple request of John's
fans--never repeat the name of John's killer: deny him the fame and
notoriety he was seeking. Bagism and the Chronology are honoring
    that request.] (3691)

{Dean "Remember John Lennon" Webb: Lennon was a great musician. His loss
was a terrible tragedy, but his memory remains not only in the beauty of
the music he left behind, but in that of those he influenced, as well.
We'll always miss you, John. Here are a few more remembrances of Mr.
Lennon:}

I have been collecting Deep Purple and related band
stuff since 1968. The time has come to pass the
collection on to new fans.

Can you tell me where the best place to advertise the
collection would be ?

The collection consists of -
1) all the official albums.
2) many original singles (on Harvest)
3) coloured vinyl albums and singles
4) picture disks
5) import albums
6) loads of import singles (jap, russian, etc.)
7) the odd bootleg or two
8) tour programmes
9) a huge collection of press cuttings from 1968-*

* The press cuttings are split into the different
groups and follow DPs metoric rise and the launch of
Rainbow, Whitesnake and Gillan.

I wait to hear from you
