From the Editor, Dean Webb: dplist(at-a-domain-named)deep-purple.com
Well, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the USA and everywhere else in
the world. Here in the US, it's a time of giving thanks, so let me give
out some DP-related thanks-es... We can all be thankful that...
*DP are still going strong as the best rock band in the world
*DP made a great tour
*DP released a live album and a video
*DP will soon be releasing ANOTHER live album
*RJD sings with Big Ian on SOTW on the next live album
*TMIB seems to be doing all right and has his hair under control, thank
you very much for asking
*Coverdale, Hughes, and Nick Simper are doing what they want to be doing
with their solo careers and are sounding good these days
*Gillan, IGB, and Rainbow remasters are coming out
*Rod Evans did NOT try to tour as DP this year
*WDWTWA 25th anniversary is only going to be 4 years behind schedule in
getting released
*Ian Gillan cut his hair so we all now have a chance to keep up with him
on this time around when he lets it grow back out (should we choose to do
so) (I haven't had a haircut since March, so I'm already ahead of Big
Ian!)
So, as you gather around your CD and vinyl players this holiday season and
crank the volume up on your DP tracks, give thanks for the great stuff the
band has put out so far and look forward with hope to the future... hope
that they'll play Mitzi Dupree in concert... hope that Ian G. will sing
Mk3 and/or Mk4 material... hope thatWDWTWA 25th doesn't slip another
year... hope that you won't look goofy should Ian G. decide to keep it
short another year...
May you and yours find blessings and spiritual peace this holiday season!
Happy Thanksgiving from the Deep Purple Digest!
So listen, so learn, so read on, you gotta hit page down to read the list
of Deep Purple! (Try singing that line along with "Book of Taliesyn"... it
kinda works!)

Greetings all!
During the halftime show of the Florida State-University of Florida

Greetings Purple People,
First things first, Yes I have the Kerrang Mag. with the medevil pic's
in it. Just like someone else commented " the guy WHO THINKS that that
is RITCHIE in the bottom pic on the forth page of the article, needs his
eyesight checked seriously. Besides anyone WHO REALLY follows TMIB knows
he had Hair Implants in the Mid to Late 70's. I met TMIB 2-2-85 & He is
NOT & DOES NOT Wear a WIG!!!!!!!!! That said and done on to Tunes Purple
should open with and include in there set. The OPENING number should be
either Hard Lovin' Man or Smooth Dancer both kick [butt] like a punch in
the face. Speed King & Burn also fit this mold and fit the bill to open
with. Although the last time I saw them they opened with VAVOOM Ted the
Mechanic which was great, as was all of the song from the two CD's with
S. Morse they did that night. Now I'm a Hardcore Blackmore Fan, but that
night it was like "Ritchie WHO? " Personally I'm just happy everyones
still around and making damn good music and they all seem happy too. The
worst thing that could happen would be RB back in Purple because the DP
we all know and love would die a Miserable DEATH. I for one don't want
to see THE GREATEST BAND TO GRACE ANY STAGE ANYWHERE IN THE GALAXY end
that way.
As for others to include Place in Line, Wasted Sunsets, Maybe I'm a Leo,
No,No,No, Stangeways, & The Battle Rages On.
Have a Purple Day,
Blackmore-izing the world once again this is John Gallagher a.k.a (Uncle
Buck)
{Dean "Editor" Webb: You're right. Strangeways needs to be in that live
set... You know, Iron Maiden recently made a video game and let the fans
pick the songs to go in it and recorded new versions of them... Once we
get the band subbed to the list, we gotta drop some serious hints!}

Nigel, if you have the Metal Hammer in question please scan the picture
and let us all decide. I haven't seen it for about 10 years but was
absolutely convinced without a shadow of a doubt that it was him as was a
friend of mine who I showed it to.
I have asked this friend, who also used to own a copy, to see if he could
look it up but am not sure if he still has the thing.
Until it is posted on the www the world will be left in suspense.
Are you a big Blackmore fan by any chance Nigel ????
"Sorry Chris but this is sheer and utter B.S.!!! There isn't the faintest

I don't like to be critical of a DP fan but under no circumstances could

Never seen that picture, but Nigel's probably right. I don't think RB
would pose for promo pictures without protection, so to speak.
The answer to what his protection may be is up for debate though. I've
heard all sorts of things. Wigs, hair transplants, you name it... Anyone
got any official info on this? ;) I'm fairly sure something's been done
though. It's not a common thing to get more/bigger hair with age... ;)

This is the same company that has released remastered editions of quite a
number of Gillan/IGB titles. Anyone got any of those? Hope RAH won't get a
Uriah Heep kind of treatment then. Deserves better. Speaking of American
record companies, since DP don't have a US label at the moment AFAIK, hope
they haven't signed to Spitfire permanently.
Beats me why Eagle Rock will do the Euro version of RAH, and not EMI. With
Eagle's Cherkazoo and Relatives releases in mind, they don't appear to be
as classy as EMI. Money has probably got something to do with it...
Speaking of RAH, Roger mentioned (see RAH thoughts at deep-purple.com)
that there was a possible TV showing in the pipeline before Christmas.
Now, if that thing comes off, I wonder on which channels it would air?
I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

I listened to some of my Deep Purple bootlegs lately, and I found out that
Steve Morse also plays the burn-riff in Speed king from on the bootleg "Is
that you?" dated 5 july 1996 in Halmstad, Sweden. Great to hear him play
it.
But thank god they didn't do the whole song because I don't think it would
be good to let Ian sing Coverdale songs. David has a melodramatic voice
and
Ian's got a power-voice; I think their voices differ way too much. In my
opinion David screwed up all the mkII songs when he was in purple. A few
days ago I listened to cd2 of OTWOARF and when they did Highway star I put
on a cd of Shania Twain. So this shows that when DP screws up their own
songs, I'm totally lost and confused.
By the way, is it true that David Coverdale releases a new album next
year?
Opener & closer
I agree with a lot of you that they should play Smooth dancer, and it
would
be a great opener too. It would be great if one of the five guys would
read
the digests. We should try to get them to do Smooth dancer as well as
Mitzi
Dupree (somewhere in the middle of the show). As a closer of the show they
may play anything they like as long it's old and famous. But I think they
should drop Smoke, because DP has passed that station already a long time
ago.
I am still missing MKIII the final concerts. Is there anybody who wants
to
trade that one for a bootleg or something? My bootlegs are at
http://g-alberts.webjump.com
Cheers,
Gerard Alberts
The Netherlands
{Dean: David Coverdale doing HS is definitely an acquired taste.}

Does any one know why Pat Regan is no longer producing Blackmore's Night?
I
know hw had a hand in TBRO,and was full producer on SIUA,and SOTM. About a
month ago Ritchie and Candace held an online chat on TWEC,and when i asked
wahy he was no longer producing Candace said for legal reasons they were
not
allowed to discuss it in public,so what gives?? Ritchie and Jeff Glixman
handled the production on UAVM,and while far from doing a bad job, they did
not achieve the depth of Pat Regan's work,IMO of course. Any help on this

I would suggest:
Naked Thunder ('90)
and
Toolbox ('91)
Both are excellent and rocking! I've also been told that Magic from '83?
is good as well, but haven't heard it. And in response to the Blackmore
question, NO...

In the last Digest, Rob Richardson ( mailto:robrich(at-a-domain-named)juno.com) wrote that:
>They really don't think it was a good album. I happen to think it's
>quite worthy of the Deep Purple name, although it is not as good as In
>Rock, Fireball or Machine Head.
I agree that this is a good album. Just because there was a bad vibe in
1973 when it was recorded doesn't mean that the songs, performed live with
a
new guitarist (well, new-ish) 26 years or so later, couldn't become real
crowd pleasers, not to mention, give the band the chance to play some
other
material. Sometimes I think the band could draw on their back catalouge
with a little more imagination when it comes to set-lists. Sure, keep 1
or
2 for the live show, but what about some variety. Nearly 30 years of
machine head stuff live is enough now. My Vote for a new opener "
Coming
Home" and encore- "Hallelujah" with more focus on the new stuff,
interspersed with WDWTWA tracks like Smooth Dancer, Mary Long, Rat Bat
Blue
etc and one or two Mk4 songs. But then, what about Mk1 material.
Hmm....could be a long concert!
Douglas
{Dean: OK, step one, find out where DP lives... step two, buy a tent and a
sleeping bag... step three, camp out on their front lawn... step four,
refuse to go away until they put more WDWTWA in their concerts, open with
"Comin' Home" and play more stuff from the Morse era. And Mitzi Dupree.
And No No No. And Bird Has Flown. and...}

All this talk about Spitfire Records got me curious...
OK, they're releasing the Concerto 30. Why? Well, I wonder if releasing
IGB and non-Gillan Ian Gillan solo material (The Gillan records tht were
remastered are: Clear Air Turbulence, Scarabus, Accidentally on Purpose,
and Cherkazoo). and the fact that DIO's next release are on the labe had
anything to do with it? I know some of you expressed reservations about
the label, so I hope they treat RJD right on his next effort.
Anyway, is this just coincidence? I think not...

As
