Well, I hope whoever mentioned that wig on Blackmore has a copy of that
picture so we can all take a look-see and determine if TMIB really is or
isn't the greyed geezer at the castle (or whatever). The controversy it
started messed up my happy home... made me mistreat my only, my only child
(Dah-dahh) Ooooo-ooooo yeah-ey-yeah (Whoops! Wrong 70's hard rock band
from England...) Ironic that when someone posts how genteel and civilized
this list is, I have to edit down the language in a post or two...
Ironic, too, when someone posts a Q about the Dixie Dregs, the answer
arrived in the very next message. Too strange.
OK, I wrote this digest to commemorate the opening of my local pub, "The
Witch's Legs"... (BTW, a few questions about that running line in LATO: 1)
is there really a pub by that name? 2) Is it a reference to Baba Yaga? (I
doubt it...) 3) Or is Big Ian being a cunning language specialist again?
(I'd say linguist, but this is a clean list when I feel like it... ;-))

Subject: How come so little WDWTWA live?
Recently, Dean Webb asked: BTW, is there any reason the WDWTWA album is
the
least-played live of the Mk2 lineup?
Based on interviews I've read (especially Jon Lord),my thought is this:
They really don't think it was a good album. I happen to think it's
quite worthy of the Deep Purple name, although it is not as good as In
Rock, Fireball or Machine Head.
I believe there's something subconscious going on here in regards to
WDWTWA. The band members remember the friction and resulting unhappiness
amongst themselves (read: Gillan and Blackers) that left a dark cloud in
the studio. So when they hear a song or think about it, they flash back
to the bad memories when it was written and recorded instead of judging
the material on its own merits. It's the same thing as how Black Sabbath
members talk poorly about the "Never Say Die" album. It's not "Sabbath,
Bloody Sabbath", but it's still a good album by a great band.
Actually, I think angry feelings lead to better music than happy times.
I am curious as to the opinions of the other list members on this.
Rob
{Dean: So does this mean that WDWTWA, HOBL, TBRO, material from Gillan
(1980's), Born Again, and anything else that put Ian off his custard is
off-limits? Such a shame... Which is more likely, Ian singing "Burn" or
"Smooth Dancer"?}

Hmm...I really liked the way Fireball worked as an opener on LATO.
For a closer, I gotta agree with you on Black Night. Keep SOTW in the
middle of the set.
--T.J.
{Dean: Fireball was an OK opener, but could be played more aggressively. I
like a good thrashing at the start of the concert. I recall Ian with Black
Sabbath singing "Neon Knights." Now THAT was an opening song! Maybe DP
should use that one... maybe they could get Dio as a second singer...
maybe I'm dreaming again...}

Subject: Gillan sings MK3 and MK4
Good morning everybody,
So, my set list would have the band kick it off with "Smooth Dancer",
"69", "Burn", or "Comin' Home" (c'mon, Ian, do the tribute to Bolin!), end
powerfully with "Hard Lovin' Man", and then encore things off with "Black
Night" and "Lucille." Work "Mitzi Dupree" somewhere in there and you got a
DP concert that'll knock everyone on their backsides!
I really like if Gillan sings MK3 and MK4 materials like, "Burn",
"Mistreated", "Comin' Home" and "You Keep On Moving".
What should DP start and finish their concerts with?
"Burn" should be a good opener of a gig.
"Highway Star" is definitely a crowd-pleasing start, but I bet the band
(except Morse) are sick of it to start the concert.
Indeed. The boys need some more. Anyhow, to listen the drum snares in
"Made In Japan" and "Come Hell Or High Water" are still worst to hear.
Those are the parts that still make me thrilling everytime I listen to.
Great tune. Perfection.
Also, to hear the intro chords of "Burn" in during "Speed King jamming" in
the album "CHOHW" was perfect. Such contributions make it better and I
always like to hear. However, the rock'n'roll covers are not good enough
on TA album.
All the best.
Altan
{Dean: Morse also did a "Burn" riff in a recording of a HOB concert from
Chicago I've heard. I wonder if someone told him to cut it out... pity.
Lovely riff. Maybe I should re-write the words and sign Ian's name to them
so he'll sing it. Maybe Roger could do Glenn's part in the songs.
Then again, maybe not. Those notes are just a shade outside of his
range... BTW, on Whitesnake's Live in the Heart of the City album, Bernie
Marsden does Glenn's lines. Hearing that again made me wonder what would
have happened if Coverdale, Lord, and Paice decided to keep the act going
and let Hughes and Bolin go. If they got Marsden and Neil Murray, DP would
have recorded "Fool For Your Loving" and then would have gotten totally
reformed in a bid to regain American audiences and been used as a front
for Coverdale's pop stylings. Good thing DP *didn't* become the property
of Coverdale... he's a good singer and all, but that stuff he did after he
reformed his band in the late 80's ain't purple music at all.}

Sorry Chris but this is sheer and utter B.S.!!! There isn't the faintest
resemblance.
I don't like to be critical of a DP fan but under no circumstances could
that
be RB - an urgent eye-test may be in order ;-)

Hello,
Before I write anything else, I'd just like to commend everyone involved
with this list, including readers and contributors. I just read my Black
Sabbath and Motorhead mailing lists and it made me appreciate this one
even
more (and not just because I like Deep Purple best) This is the
friendliest
mailing list I'm on. There aren't any heated arguements that I can
remember
and no one really argues too much. That's probably why I look forward to
this one more. Anyway, on to my purpose for today: Gillan. These albums
are
tough to find in the states, so far I've found Glory Road, Mr. Universe,
and
Rockfield Mixes (which I thoroughly enjoyed, in spite of all the bad I
heard
about the Ian Gillan Band)and I was wondering if I could bother you all to
help me out by listing your top five favorite Ian solo project
albums(including newer ones). I know this idea is chinsey, but it would
give
me a good Idea of what to pick up when the oppurtunity to buy another one
comes up again. Oh and, here's the real long shot, does anyone know of a
video of Ritchie performing with anyone where he actually seems to enjoy
being on the stage throughout the show. And is that wigless picture online
anywhere, I'd love to see that. Thanks!
-Jonathan

Here I must disagree! We know the way they played Lucille in the 70's and
occasional other 50's numbers during more recent medleys. I wonder what a
Purple rock'n'roll album would sound like. I bet they've jammed in studio
some time or another and maybe even taped some odd song. A bonus cd in the
style of John Lennon's Rock'n'Roll album would be great. It's just that
when
it comes to R'n'R IMO Ritchie's style is better than Steve's... Must be
because of his session player and Lord Sutch background.
Heikki
{Dean: Indeed. DP could do a 50's rave up as well as any Great Old Man of
British Rock. Most likely, better, too. Would be nice to see them all do a
CD of 50's covers.}

Good news: Spitfire Records will release Deep Purple's "Concertos: Live at
the Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony" in the US on January 18.
Bad news: Spitfire Records sucks. They made many mistakes with the last
three Uriah Heep albums (sloppy scanned artwork, tracks cut off), and
cancelled several of their attempted US tours. At least Spitfire's not
DP's main label (I hope!).
Later,
Mark
{Dean: Will it also be available online at the DP online store?}

I apologize, Svante is right, only tracks 5 to 8 are live.
And it is still one of my favourite Dregs-Album ;-)
