From the Editor, Dean Webb: dplist(at-a-domain-named)deep-purple.com

Well, sorry it took a while, but I spent the last week recovering from
another system crash. Deciding that my 3-year old PC was toast, I went
ahead and built out a new system. It's a good reliable box and ought to
run just fine for at least a while! It's much faster, more RAM, and better
bus speeds, so it should take me roughly 5 minutes less to make each
digest. Not much of a savings, but you should see it ROCK on the games!
(OK, so my upgrade urge wasn't totally business-minded... :-)

We've been getting lots of subscribers added in the last few days, and I'd
like to send a special "Ow are ya!" to each one of you! Even though you
send your mail to the majordomo for a sub, you always send it to me at
dplist(at-a-domain-named)deep-purple.com for submissions. Feel free to send in your "this is
my first post"-type stuff and let me know if you have a web page you'd
like me to link back to the digest links page.

In the home front news, my youngest son does not seem as much of a DP fan
as my 5-year-old. On the other hand, when I put on a video of Black
Sabbath on Don Kirshner, he went nuts and started jumping up and down with
this huge grin, flailing his arms and letting his tongue hang out of his
mouth. Just to test him, I switched over to "Smoke on the Water" from LATO
after the third song in Sabbath's set. He got this confused look on his
face and my 5-year-old jumped up and started doing his thing on the air
guitar. Go fig. Looks like they won't be fighting over my records...

OK, enough chatter! On with the digest!

Dean Webb's thoughts on FOXBAT/KBFH were very interesting. As one of those
folks who got into DP Mark IV AFTER getting into Bolin, and who heard
Foxbat
after YEARS of being a Bolin fan, I will say that it is not Tommy's best
night but it is one of the good ones with Deep Purple. While I love both
DP
AND Bolin, I often thought that the sum of both was not as great as each
was
separately. (I would still take "Machine Head" and "Teaser") A lot of
listening went into me changing my mind somewhat. I really dig Mark IV but
I
do consider it an altogether different beast than Mark II, in the same way
that I do not find Mark I and Mark II really comparable. Foxbat shows DP
as
showmen; what I mean by that is that there are distracting moments that
you
can tell would be VERY cool if you were in the 10th row but they just
sound
like pauses in the energy when it's on CD. That is true IMHO of much live
Purple; audience participation etc does not translate well live. As for
"Foxbat," some GREAT moments include the intro and the lengthy mid-solos
of
"Gettin Tighter": this was NOT played that way all the time. The inclusion
of
"Homeward Strut" (mislabeled "The Grind" on KBFH!!!!) is great too; Dean,
this is the funk number that comes in after the drum solo. On Bolin's
"Teaser" LP, the lead lines in this song are all guitar; here Bolin plays
the
James Brownish funk guitar while Jon Lord plays his "Rockford Files" lead
synth!! Overall, a great guitar display on "Foxbat" BUT I would still have
to
say that "Fox" does NOT make it on to my "Top 5" Bolin recordings -
incidentally, more and more Mark IV comes out on boots/CD-Rs, I will write
something up on that soon.
As for comparing the Morse/Mark VII to Bolin/Mark IV, there is the
obvious:
an American guitarist! One more noted for his jazzy forays than his heavy
metal background. Thumbs up to DP for not picking a Blackers clone either
time. With BOTH line-ups, if you are looking for Mark II soundalikes, big
mistake. BUT if you can listen to them with open ears and an open mind,
great music is there. For what it is worth, the obvious appearance of
GIllan
(and lack of Glenn) in the new line-up DOEs bring it closer to the Mark II
sound vocally/lyrically, but, like Bolin, Morse has taken the band in a
very
diferent direction. Too many older bands regurgitate; DP innovates. Jim

TB's Teaser after hearing him on this and playing CTTB a million times at
work.)

Dean,

You simply have to buy Teaser. It is the greatest album ever recorded. I
promise you will never regret it. Private Eyes is good but does not
compare.

Dean, that would be a good investment. I absolutley love Teaser!! It is
one
of the most powerful solo albums ANY member from DP have released. It
grabs
you from the first song and doesnt let go untill the end. The 2 highlights
for me are Dreamer (Glenn Hughes makes a vocal contribution), and Savannah
Woman (Its jazzy).
I also love OTWOARF . Especially Gettin Tighter, great funky mid section
dont ya think?

{Looks like I gotta get Teaser! Foxbat is great, my fave is the growly
"Stormbringer" and Glenn's Wonderesque vocals on "This Time Around." Great

This one's actually called Homeward Strut, it's from Tommy's Teaser album.

>This Time Around (with Owed to G),

Don't believe in everything you read Dean :-), Goin' Down is also from
Springfield.

>Coverdale is definitely in a back seat on this album, with most of the

I'd just like to add that Coverdale actually sounds *horrible*, not just
on
this recording but on pretty much the whole tour...

> (I'm seriously considering getting
>TB's Teaser after hearing him on this and playing CTTB a million times at

Get it by all means! This one makes my deserted island list. You've
already
heard Homeward Strut, if you have LCiJ, you've also heard Wild Dogs, that
should already give you some idea what to expect.
It's absolutely brilliant album, with excellent songwriting, and really
good musicianship throughout. Musically, it's pretty varied, with leanings
on jazz, funk, even reggae (!), of course rock sound is predominant, but
it's definitely not just a simple rock album, there's much more to it. It
showcases Tommy as a very diverse and interesting guitarist, he's not an
astonishing virtuoso like Ritchie, but, hey, he was great nevertheless.

Subject: MK-IV and MK - Morse

Ok, here is my list of similarities between MK - IV and MK - Morse.

~ Both had totally different styles to the Blackmore days

~Both have guitarists with 5 letter names, and bassists with 6 letters

~Both bass players sang (Glover does backup at concerts.. Realy!)

~Both wrote songs about the different types of tension (MK - IV wrote
GETTIN
TIGHTER / MK - Morse wrote LOOSEN MY STRINGS)

~Sometimes IAN GILLAN feels like screaming, and as we all know, so did
GLENN
HUGHES

~Both print the lyrics on their studio albums

~Both did a world tour after releasing their albums

~Both guitarists replaced Blackmore after he quit.

~Both incarnations first albums are superior over the last effort with
Blackmore ( CTTB / BATTLE RAGES ON )

~Both guitarists had solo albums out at the same time as their DP release
(
BOLIN - TEASER / MORSE - STRESSFEST )

~After MK - IV and then MK - Morse formed, BLACKMORE formed a new band (
RAINBOW / BLACKMORE'S NIGHT )

~Ian Paice and Jon Lord are the only 2 founding members in both

~The second song played at concerts by both were about "A lady who sells
herself for m
oney" ( MK - IV LADY LUCK / MK - Morse Strange Kinda Woman )

~Both released an official bootleg from the 6th year of the decade (MK -
IV
released OTWOARF from 1976, MK - Morse released LATO from 1996 )

~Both guitarists are American

~Glover, from MK - Morse, has played with Coverdale and Hughes, from MK -
IV, at the BUTTERFLY BALL, WHERE LOVE IS ALL, CAN'T YA HEAR THE CALL )

~Mk - IV and MK - Morse have both had members that sang for Black Sabbath
(
Gillan / Hughes )

~Both include the song "NOT FADE AWAY" at their concerts (MK-IV, during
Highway Star / MK - Morse, during Speed King )

~Both singers (Coverdale / Gillan) had an arguement with Blackmore

There you have it.

awrightie then...
The first obvious ones..
1. Both Bolin and Morse are/were american. The only americans in the group.
2. Lordy and Paice are once more the only two original bandmembers.
Furthermore..
3. Both Bolin and Morse came out with soloalbums coinciding with releases from the band.
4. On tour, both bassplayer and guitarist sang backup vocals on some songs.
5.Both line ups took as a habit to close the set with "Highway Star ".
6. On both lineups, it's been customary to record most of the studioalbums in U.S.

That's all I can come up with at the moment...

Cheers
Jesper Almén

{Regarding the tiebreakers... I can't even remember what the original contest was for... I guess you are all winners! Congrats! You each win an all-expenses-paid trip to Tierra del Fuego! Offer void outside of the United States, Texas, and my house... must be present to win... no purchase necessary, but it sure helps your chances...)

June, 25th, Cologne.

Well, Michel was right. It was a very good gig, and i would rate it much
better than that one, a week before. The Cologne Gig in
Bad-Mergentheim(remember, it was Open-Air) would have been best. But the
guys changed the Medley thing from one to the other occasion. They had
for instance also Highway to hell a week before and the Jon Lord Solo in
Cologne was the same one he played on October 8th, 1998 in Düsseldorf.
But after all, besides an "older" woman, wearing a "PUR" T-Shirt (for
all of you, not living in Germany, PUR is a german "Rock" Band, not that
bad, but have absolutely nuffin to do with Deep PURple, besides the
three letters ;-)) and leaving the place after they started off with
"The boys are back in town" and, perhaps, realizing, that the band was
doing english-sung hard rock, it was a pleasure to see them live again.
The only thing i would love them to do is, to gig on my 40th birthday in
2003. Does anybody know, how much they take? (Just kidding, dunno think,
i can afford them (sigh))

But finally: COME HERE AGAIN! The sooner the better. Or, like they did
it in the show: Sometimes i feel like screaming!

I'd just like to quote something from Marko's brilliant
Gartmisch-Partenkirchen review to show what a cool gut Big Ian is:

Some people next to me (in the first row
;-)) wanted to do some photographs but were hindered by the security
people.
So Gillan tried to force them
to the side, sitting down on the edge of the stage and posing for the
photographers.
Short after that, the securities wanted to hinder some photographers
again.
So Gillan was climbing down
the stage(!), went to one of the fans, took his camera and made some
pictures of his bandmates playing.
After entering the stage again, he told one of his roadies, that the
securities should leave, and that's what
they did for the whole concert.

Hi It's been a while.I saw some footage last nite of Blackmore on
Vh-1.Were

singing hush.I was happy to finally see him.I never really saw a live shot
of
him and I always though he was Captain beyond.I was right He was the man
on
the cover.He was very handsome.
After the DP footage Richie was talking again about how he likes to face
the
amps towards the singer so he can loose his hearing and not his own. What
kind
of thing was that to say.His a real piece of work. After that him and his
want

guess he is not looking to make any money. He says I like music we can all
clap our hands to around the table. Then you see him and Candice in a getup
like you would never believe. He looked like a real
jerk.Walking arould in his pilgrim getup like he is in the 1800
century.What
a joke.
Don't think I don't love blackmore's music I do.But he is another story.

From the editor: Dean Webb dplist(at-a-domain-named)deep-purple.com

DP vs. Black Sabbath in the early 70's...

Having just gotten a few bootlegs of Black Sabbath concerts from before
1975, I have to ask if I'm the only one that finds the DP show more hard
rock/metallic than the BS show. This is an overall consideration, not a
song-by-song matchup from their general setlists. Sabbath tends to go off
on a bunch of trippy blues-jazz improvisations while DP keeps their edge
hard. Even comparing "Hard Road" with the BS instrumentals leaves me with
the conclusion that DP is the harder band. It's not until "Symptom of the
Universe" and other Sabotage-era material shows up that BS gets it into
gear as far as keeping a tighter focus and harder edge. Comparing their
1974 sets, in particular, is quite telling. Putting the BS California Jam
up against DP Mk3's "Live in London" (BTW, anybody out there got a VIDEO
of DP at the CalJam in good condition? Please let me know, as I'm
looking!) is amazing! BS is rambling on a bluesey groove while DP smashes
yer brains with "You Fool No One". Sabbath kinda stumbles from one song
to the next while DP punches the time clock and keeps to business. (Were
they taking different drugs? Hmmmm...)

I mean, I half expected Ozzy to welcome his special guest, Mel Torme, and
start a scatting duet with him. Not totally expected, just half. But
still, it wouldn't have been that big of a surprise...

Is it just me, or did DP rock the house harder at the time than BS? On
album, I think BS definitely comes across as the harder band, but live?
Iommi just trips out and lets the tunes flow from his blues-jazz heart.
Blackmore and the band, however, get more aggressive and potent on the
stage. I will compare their closing numbers: BS does a good, hard job with
"Children of the Grave" and "Paranoid", but "Paranoid" is over just too
quickly. DP, meanwhile, slams your head to the wall until you surrender
with "Space Truckin" and "Black Night/Lucille" (Mk2) or "Goin'
Down/Highway Star" (Mk3). Non-stop heavy rock from DP without a letup.
(Unless you consider Glenn Hughes' "whoo-hoo-00-hoo"-ing a letup, but
that's a side matter for DP's Human Resources department...)

Those that can compare, let me know what you think: who rocked hardest in
1971-1975? DP Mk2 & 3 or Black Sabbath?
