'Ere's a digest for ya...
On the Wings of a Russian Foxbat (which I'll just call "Foxbat" because the
letters are too hard to keep in order for me...) is a great album! I'm
listening to it as I put today's list together and it is just outstanding!
I'll put the review for it down after I get the rest of this issue done.
I'll say this right now, though, what a difference an arm makes! Bolin is
on fire in this set, but I'll say more of that in the review.
Anyway, on with the digest!

Radio Station Triple M , in Australia recently had a countdown of the top
200 rock songs of the 70's.
I was surprised to hear that the highest rating DP song was Woman from
Tokyo, which came in at no.10!! I did not hear it all so I didn't get to
hear what Smoke got ( I am positive that it would be in there somewhere,
after all it is the only DP song that people other than fans know). The
radio presenter was full of praise for WFT, saying "that was from the
monster album in 73' Who do we think we are" .
Number 1 was Queen's Bohemium Rhapsody.
BTW - Does anyone know if the Concerto gig this year will be recordeed on
CD
and released as a part of the anniversary editions?? And what is the latest
on WDWTWA 25/26/27/28 ?????

I've never listened to OTWOARF, so ... Please, let me know: Does LAZY has
vocals?? Who does it?? Or is it only instrumental??

{Coverdale does the first verse, Hughes blueses-up the second, no 3rd

Hi
I have just joined the list and am looking forward to finding out more
about DP. My knowledge is sadly lacking. I have managed to see them a
handful of times I am relieved to say, the last being 6 years ago in
Birmingham. I can't believe it has been so long. However I am hoping
to make up for it. Thanks to the newsgroup I have a ticket for the
Concerto in September. Mind you the thought of Ian with his hair cut
alarms me somewhat. I hope it grows quickly or I won't recognize him.
Just to bore you a bit about me: I am younger than most of the band but
old enough to have loved their music from the start. I live in Leeds in
the UK. Child in Time is the greatest rock song of all time. Someone
said they thought the new Jon Lord album was boring. I am really
impressed with it. It is charged with emotion, yet very relaxing and
Sam Brown's voice is wonderful.
It would be interesting to meet anyone else going to the Concerto. I am
taking a friend whom I have recently converted to DP. My husband thinks
Concerto is boring so has turned down this opportunity. Crazy!

Help
I'm So Glad
Kentucky Woman
River Deep Mountain High
Lalena
Hallelujah
Lady Luck
Too Much Is Not Enough
Bludsucker
Maybe that Dick Pimple track should be here, too, and I do hope you didn't
want the list of the BBC recordings DP mark 2 did of mark 1 stuff...
About the remastered HoBL... I bought the LP version first, and always
thought that Ritchie's guitar synth solo on Strangeways was long enough in
that 6 minute version.
Heikki
{OK, the answers: Hush, I'm So Glad, Help, Hey Joe, Kentucky Woman, We Can
Work It Out, River Deep Mountain High, Lalena, (I'll spot Hallelujah and
the Fireball 25th thing to each other... not on the standard album
releases...) Lady Luck, Too Much Is Not Enough, and Bludsucker. 11 cuts.
Both guys missed one. Paul missed "Hey Joe" and Heikki missed "We Can Work
It Out". That would mean we still have... A TIE!
Grrr.
OK. NEXT tiebreaker... And this one I'm gonna throw open to the masses!
That's right, anyone can answer!
What are all the SIMILARITIES between DP Mk 4 and the current lineup?
ANYTHING they have in common is fair game. Be creative! For instance: Both
lineups did not have the original guitarist for Deep Purple... Neither did
they have the original vocalist or bass player. OK, find as many as you can
before the next issue goes out and send them in!}

This is from Gillan's autobiography, "Child In Time".
(Scene is late '82 - somewhere in Bangkok)
{Hold on. Before we go any further, I want to point out that I heard Ian
Gillan tell this story on a radio interview back in 1987, in pretty much
this format. Anyway, if you don't like hearing about wierd stuff involving
people's bodies, page down rapidly...}
In terms of shows, we were perhaps getting a bit stale, and maybe that's
down (in part) to the sheer amount of touring we'd been doing, including a
return to the Far East, where our star shone bright. Still, it was there,
in Bangkok, that I witnessed a scene later to emerge in one of my songs on
The House of Blue Light (Deep Purple). A few of us went to this place I
knew about, where you could see shows which were pretty well down to the
knuckle. We went in, and there was this strip routine. After everybody
had left, we slipped into a room behind the kitchen, where there was an
altogether different cabaret going on. It was highly skilled and very,
very rude, but without being smutty. What these girls were doing with
their bodies - double-edged razor blades tied with cotton- signing
autographs without using their hands; opening bottles of Coke - well, the
whole thing was astonishing!
The highlight of the evening was one particular lady, and how she
entertained a table of about five Italian business people. They were
sitting in
amazement at the spectacle before them, each with a wine glass on the
table. Then the lady bent over backwards, in a crab-like position, and
from
between her legs she fired five ping-pong balls in rapid succession, each
one landing in a wine glass. Apparently, it's a high form of art over
there, and before table tennis was invented, they used eggs! Not the sort
of thing to promote in England, however, which is where the final tour by
Gillan was planned, and performed to full houses. The idea for the song
'Mitzi Dupree', was planted, but it needed a later incident before it would
be written.

Subject: She Was
I realize that it has been a while since the release of Abandon, but
I would just like to say that She Was is my new favorite DP track. I
also recently got a copy of DP at Czech in '92 and even though Joe
Lynn Turner is not my choice for permanent purple shoes he was able
to reach all notes originally achieved by Mr. Hughes and Dave. He's
has quite a growling screamer for chops. I also got Mr. Hughes new
solo CD and I must confess I like Addiction hands down above all I
have heard by him solo wise. I also appreciate Jon Lords new CD if he
had not done it I would not listen to music like that it is very very
cool. My comments may lack style and flair but I hope you don't mind
them.

Review of On the Wings of a Russian Foxbat
by Dean Webb (dplist(at-a-domain-named)deep-purple.com)
WOW. This album was amazing, and I say that even after I had high
expectations for it! This album is a recording of their concert in Long
Beach, California, in 1976 with two additional tracks from their earlier
show from the same tour in Springfield, Mass. The concert line-up includes:
Burn, Lady Luck, Getting Tighter, Love Child, Smoke on the Water (incl.
Georgia on My Mind), Lazy, The Grind, This Time Around (with Owed to G),
Tommy Bolin solo, Stormbringer, Highway Star, and Goin' Down. (Bonus tracks
are SOTW and HS from Springfield)
I noticed the conspicuous absence of Mk3 standards such as "You Fool No
One" and "Mistreated". YFNO's role was supplanted by "Lazy", which includes
some of the absolutely finest drumming I have ever heard Ian Paice come up
with, and "Mistreated", the vehicle for David Coverdale, gets bumped out by
"Getting Tighter" and "This Time Around", the vehicle(s) for Glenn Hughes.
Coverdale is definitely in a back seat on this album, with most of the
vocal highlights going to a scream-happy Hughes. Glenn does a good job on
most of his stuff, irritating infrequently with his wailing. Glenn's
soulful work on "This Time Around" is very reminiscent of Stevie Wonder and
had me quite captivated.
Bolin's work is understated through much of the recording, but is in
excellent form. Lord uses quite a few synthesizers, giving the impression
that he's playing the theme from "The Rockford Files" at the end of "Lazy"
(note: "The Rockford Files" is a US TV show from around that time... I
always liked its theme...) Paice is the MVP on this release, drumming away
like I've never heard him before! Hughes is able to explore his funkier
side which, although it drove the band apart, sounds quite marvelous
(except for a few REALLY IRRITATING shrieks). Coverdale still turns in a
good show, even though I think he spent most of it having a smoke
backstage... "Stormbringer" is where he gets his best chance to shine and
the track is a highlight of the whole show: it growls and grinds so well,
you'd think Hughes and Bolin actually LIKED playing heavy rock!
More on Bolin: you need to listen carefully to his work, as it isn't mixed
to dominate over all the other players. The whole band is free to do as
they please, and Lord or Hughes occasionally walk on one of Bolin's flares
on the guitar. The track labeled "Tommy Bolin Solo" is more appropriately
several solos strung together, but each done in a way different from
Blackmore and to leave you wanting more. (I'm seriously considering getting
TB's Teaser after hearing him on this and playing CTTB a million times at
work.)
Overall, the band is very together and at top form. You can hear the
freedom each musician feels in doing what he likes, even though that
doesn't always jive with what DP did in the past. The sound is VERY funky
(pronounced FON-kay), with direct nods to Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone and
indirect influences throughout the show. Well, the HUGE amount of time on
"Getting Tighter" may not be all that indirect, but it made a nice parallel
to use the word in the last sentence and, oh, phooey! It ain't Mk1, 2, 3,
5, 6, or 7+. This is Mk4, Bolin's the guitarist, and it be FON-kay. I
happen to like the funk-rock sound, so I really enjoyed it. Real die-hard,
listen-to-nuthin-but-metal types are only going to like most of
"Stormbringer", the methamphetamine versions of "Highway Star" and "Burn".
If you don't like Glenn Hughes' vocal stylings, don't get this album. If
you liked CTTB, you will love this set, though. If you're a completist,
you'll be glad that this is one you need for your collection. Compared to
the other live sets, it ain't MIJ or LATO... it beats NP... better than
MIE, more on par with the Archive Alive! CD, Mk3: The Final Concerts. I
give it an 8.99. I would have given it a 9, but Glenn really pissed me off
with a few of his screams... He recoverd on "This Time Around", though.
Beautifully.
