>From the Editor, Dean Webb: dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com

Wow! You guys sent in a bunch of stuff! Too cool! Well, I'm back from
holidays and a bunch of other stuff, so I should have more time for the DPD
and associated projects. (Yeah, right!) I need to get caught up on the
archives and I still have to forge ahead on the celeb. deathmatch pages.
Part of the catch is that I'm not yet able to do any of this stuff from
where I work just yet. I hope to one day soon, but that day may be a few
months off, at best. No matter, it's fun to do at home, I just can't get as
much done as I used to.

Just finished listening to the live tape of Mk. 1. It was VERY interesting
and musically good, as well. Lots of spacey sounds from Lord and Blackmore,
with great drumming by Mr. Paice. Rod had some stunning moments of a
capella singing, but you can hear him hesitating to go full out and scream
like Gillan or Coverdale. Simper gets kinda lost in the mud of the mix, but
that's just life in the big city, I guess. It's interesting how the band
only played two of their own numbers, "Mandrake Root" and "Wring That
Neck", with the rest of the tunes being cover versions. When Rod Evans
introduces the covers, he is very careful to state which other band did
them (except for "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman") and waits for the applause
for those bands to die down a bit before proceeding. I found that
interesting, verrry interesting. He didn't forget words, but he really
wasn't all that forceful as a rock frontman. Balladeer, yes, but frontman
on a stage show, not really, not with this bunch. The best stuff on the
tape are the guitar and organ solos. One can almost pick out the beginnings
of "Lazy" in one of Jon's steamier solos.

Listening to some other stuff (a recording of Gillan with Sabbath) got me
to wonder what would have happened if Gillan had been the first BS singer
and Ozzy had gotten into Episode Six with Roger Glover and then got into
DP... Here's something to consider: a bunch of guys would say "Sabbath
without Gillan is fake Sabbath! That stuff Ozzy did with them in 83-84 was
OK, but it wasn't the same!" "Child in Time" would have been done by BS and
"Iron Man" would have sounded a lot different with Paice's drumming and
Lord cranking out the riffs on the keys. (I know Geezer wrote it, but this
is a switcheroo thing, so bear with me.) One question: who would have
gotten to Montreaux at the same time Zappa was there to experience (and
write) "Smoke on the Water"?

Well, on with the LONG digest!

I wanted to drop an idea for a new band to add to the Celebrity
Deathmatch section. Feel free to give me funny looks here, this is just a
band I dig, and I'm wondering if anyone here agrees with me that they might
appeal to fellow Purple people.
Talking Heads. When I was 10, back in '85, my dad got into them. The
last album they put out (Naked, 1988) did nothing for me (they seemed to be
going for a world-music-type sound) and I stopped digging out my dad's
albums for about ten years. Recently, though, I picked up the Stop Making
Sense soundtrack on CD, and I remember why I liked it so much. Their sound
up to that point (1983) was really hollow and "empty" sounding (what you
hear on the radio a lot), but on their '83 tour, they added a huge backup
band; like Guns n' Roses would later do; but unlike GNR it worked really
well. It took away that empty sound, and their next studio album (Little
Creatures, 1985) is my favorite, as they decided to do away with the hollow
sound...Damn, words are pretty inadequate for describing music. If you
haven't heard it, you probably don't know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, enough rambling about a band completely unrelated to DP. I
was just wondering what Dean and everyone else thinks about recommending
Talking Heads in the CDM section.

I don't want to turn this into an Iron Maiden mailing list, but one of
the reasons I'm looking forward to hearing Magic is to hear if Gers was as
atrocious in Gillan as he is in Iron Maiden. There's a gent in London I
correspond with a lot on C$erve, who to my surprise hates all post-Di'Anno
Maiden (he saw them at Reading Fest in 1980), but is pretty keen on Gers'
work with Gillan (though he too says he wasn't nearly as good as Torme; saw
'em live with both).
Anyway, I'm just looking forward to getting that tape and deciding for
myself. I have a feeling I'm going to be blown away by Glory Road, but my
curiosity is more piqued by Magic: Has Janick Gers always been =this= bad?

Hello !

Been a subscriber for a while now, never seem to have the time to write the
contributions I want to, but really enjoy reading the digest every time it
arrives. Hope to make a bigger contribution in near future, this time it's
Sweden Rock Festival that's on my mind. I'll pick up my ticket tomorrow
including both days and a nice hotellroom.(Too old for camping these
days, hmm !) Really looking forward to this event, it will be the seventh
time I attend a Purple gig, and every time I'm like a little boy waiting
for candy. Not to mention that there will be other great seventies band
performing at the same place. Captain Beyond (without Rod Evans though),
Budgie (The supergroup that never made it. Recommend all the early
records, at least the first five of them ), Michael Schenker (check out the
double UFO live, Strangers in the night from 1978, great guitar work),
Scorpions (ok, I'll know they have gone commercial, but in the early days
they were great, Tokyo Tapes is great, lot of guitar from Uli Jon Roth),
Dave Lee Roth (maybe the big mouth will perform some of his Van Halen
stuff, at least he use to bring along great musicians), Dio will be there
too (the little man with the big voice). So I "expect" there'll be a lot of
Purple People there. Sorry I got little carried away here, when I started
writing I intended it to be short, asking if somebody else was interested
in all of ous having a beer together at the festival. Always nice to put a
face to a name, if you know what I mean ? Anobody who wants to join in who
maybe have a suggestion where we could Meet ? What about you Svante (thanks
for your suggestion about using the digest for this request), you been to
this festival before and know how it looks like there. I'm going buy bus
from Oslo, Norway. Anybody interested visit the homepage of the festival at
www.karlshamnrock.com and from there contact the company nųjesbiljetten.
They set up busses from different places going to the festival. Don't know
if there are any free places left, but it's worth a try. See you at the
festival. If anybody wants to contact me my e-mail adress is as follows :
engebretsen(at-a-domain-named)of.telia.no Always nice to come in contact with other

Subject: new Blackmore's Night disc

Hi all!

Here's a short review for the new Blackmore's. I have now listened to it
for
four times since I bought it yesterday. Still some kind of first impression
still somehow...
There are 16 songs on the German version of the CD and musically it's more
authentic than on the first album. More real instruments and less synths
which I think is great. Stylewise there's not much change. If you have
loved
the first disc you'll love this one too.
"Under a violet moon" comes first and it's a more up-tempo song with
acoustic
guitars still of course. Has a great melody and a chorus to sing to.
Features
a nice appearance by Jens Johansson on the organ.
"Castles and dreams" is next. Candice's voice is dominant on this quite one
and there are ony few instruments. This reminds me on the tune "Shadow of
the Moon" somehow even though it is a lot of slower here.
"Past with good company" has got some kind of march intro with trumpets and
drum stuff. Sounds like a bit of a marching song somehow...great.
"Morning Star" kicks off with a violin intro and reminds me on gypsy music.
Sounds great to me. It's another faster tune.
"Avalon": a quiter song again determined by the lyrics
"Possum goes to Prague": an instrumental with Ritchie's guitar alone
mostly.
In the tradition of Greensleeves
"Wind in the willows": cool stuff with a flute intro. Does anyone know the
male singer on this one? It's John Ford. The name seems to be familiar to
me
but I can't figure out where I heard it before at the moment. Mid-tempo
stuff.
"Gone with the wind": Horse riding intro leads you into dramatic trumpet
kind
of stuff. A faster and a bit of dramatic tune with drum programming (you
can
hear that..argh) by Peter Rooth who is/ was Yngwie Malmsteen's guitar
technician!?!
One of my faves even though the drum thing is not so great.
"Beyond the sunset": instrumental, acoustic guitar. Beautiful melodies
here.
Awesome keyboard works that have some kind of epic touch here, too.
"March the heroes home": features a guest appearance by "Des Geyers
Schwarzer
Haufen". I'm wondering how many musicians are on this one. Sounds like a
small medieval orchestra :-) One of my faves no doubt.
"Spanish Nights (I remember it well)": the song title says it all here.
Spanish acoustic guitar stuff intro until it gets faster due to the violins
on it.
"Catherine Howard's Fate": another very slow track determined by Candice's
voice and an acoustic guitar. Authentic medieval kind of song.
"Fool's Gold": a mid-tempo tune. Reminds me on a Blind Guardian song but I
don't know which one at the moment.
"Durch den Wald zum Bach Haus": another instrumental. I would have
translated
the title with "Through the wood to the house at the brook". Yesterday
someone (Mary) told me that he thinks it's more like "Through the would to
(Johann Sebastian) Bach's house". Don't know but it would fit to that
musicially. It's still strange German though in my opinion:-)
"Now and then": a very quite ballad also determined by Candice's voice
"Self Portrait": Rainbow cover tune very close to the original but with
different instruments and Cnadice's voice of course.

RE: Bad Attitude

I like HOBL, always did. I thought Spanish Archer and Mitzi Dupree ruled,
but I always liked Bad Attitude. Why does everyone hate this tune? Albeit a
bit commercial, the rif was excellent, and Big Ian does a great job on it.
One of the under rated tunes in their catalogue I would think, but did they
ever make a bad one?

Are these CDs available in Europe, too? Got to get them!! Are there bonus
tracks on House of Blue Light? There are at least some shorter versions on
the original LP. And hopefully they put a live version of Unwritten Law
with
Paice's solo to the remastered Nobody's Perfect.

I'm willing to trade it with a copy of MARILLION - CLUTCHING AT STRAWS, the

It wasn't until today that I realized Ian Gillan's gotten rid of his

I must say that I think it's quite a good change. It's boring when people

Subject: Mk 1-4 albums reviewed

Hi all!

Here's a long review of albums made by DP Mk 1-4. I just wanted to post it
before my summer vacation.

SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE - 4
The beginning. Many nice ideas here and there, but without "Hush" and
"Mandrake Root" this would have been just another forgettable psychedelic
pop album from the late 1960s. "And The Address" is an instrumental track
that sounds a lot like the Outlaws. "One More Rainy Day", "Love Help Me",
and most of the covers sound really dated.
	BOOK OF TALIESYN - 6
More original than their debut, probably the best album by Mk 1. "Shield"
is
a great, hypnotic track, and on "River Deep, Mountain High" Purple show
their version of "wall of sound". Throughout the album one can hear how
Blackmore is beginning to steal the spotlight from Mr. Lord. But this is
still - like all the Mk 1 albums - Jon Lord's album.
	DEEP PURPLE - 5½
When you listen to this album it is obvious that Evans had to go. "Bird Has
Flown" is surprisingly hard, and "April" is a study for Concerto.
CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA - 5
Many groups made this kind of albums at the time. Purple themselves admit
that it was just a gimmick. There are nice bits every now and then, but I'm
seldom in the mood to listen the whole album through.
DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK - 8½
The first real Deep Purple album. One of those albums everybody seems to
know - if not the music then the cover.
	LIVE & RARE (a.k.a. SCANDINAVIAN NIGHTS) - 8
If you like long improvisations then this is the album for you. Then again,
30+ minutes of "Wring That Neck" and "Mandrake Root" are not for everybody.
A great chance to hear a Purple set from the early 1970s.
	FIREBALL - 9½
This album showed Purple are more than just another hard rock band. A great
album they made under pressure.
	GEMINI SUITE LIVE - 5
You either love or hate Jon Lord's orchestral pieces. I think this is
musically better than Concerto. Historically interesting, but not an
essential album to have.
	MACHINE HEAD - 9½
They went to Montreux - and the rest is history.
	IN CONCERT 1970-72 - 9
Two BBC concerts, recorded in 1970 and 1972. Good sound quality, great
performances, especially "Lucille" is fabulous.
	MADE IN JAPAN - 8
This album is considered a classic, but I think they sound tired. The only
time so far that I like original cd better than the remastered one.
	LIVE IN JAPAN - 9
The atmosphere is captured better than on Made In Japan. Otherwise it's
basically Made In Japan x3.
WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE! - 6½
After three great studio albums DP ran out of ideas. "Woman From Tokyo" is
great, other tracks are mere fillers when compared to earlier Mk 2 tracks.
	BURN - 8½
A fresh start with new line-up. They were still getting to know each other
when this album was recorded, so an achievement like this is incredible.
The
best DP studio album without Gillan.
	LIVE IN LONDON - 9½
DP Mark 3 at its best! How long do we have to wait for the remastered
version?
	CALIFORNIA JAM - 7
The legendary California Jam. Video is great, but cd suffers from poor
sound
quality.
	STORMBRINGER - 4½
Ritchie probably lost interest somewhere during these sessions. Hughes and
Coverdale carry this album - somewhere away from the traditional Purple
ground... Title track and "Soldier of Fortune" are the tracks that make
this
album worth listening.
	MADE IN EUROPE - 7
Ritchie's last gigs with Purple in the 1970s. These are not the tightest
possible versions, but for a long time this was the only official live
album
by Mark 3.
MARK III THE FINAL CONCERTS - 7½
More tracks recorded when Ritchie was leaving Purple. Nice to hear some
songs that didn't make it to Made In Europe.
COME TASTE THE BAND - 8
Bolin didn't try to copy Blackmore, so this album sounds different to any
other Purple album. They are more experimental and loose than with Ritchie.
Certainly worth listening.
LAST CONCERT IN JAPAN - 3
Lord and Paice do what they can with the rest of the band. Coverdale and
Hughes scream all the time, and Bolin's guitar is low on the mix. And
somebody had the nerve to dedicate this album to Tommy!
ON THE WINGS OF A RUSSIAN FOXBAT - 8
A long-waited proof that Mk 4 could play live.

I reviewed the original In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, and Made in
Japan -
not the remastered versions with bonus tracks. I'll probably do the
original/remastered CD comparison when I get the remastered WDWTWA...

Have a relaxing summer!

Heikki
