>From the Editor, Dean Webb: dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com

Sometimes I feel like screaming... this is one of those times.
Geocities mail is totally hosed and has been so since Monday. I can receive
mail on those accounts just fine, but sending was impossible. So, I rigged
my account to send out through my wife's SMTP handler, Netcom. Fortunately,
the list is not heavy this week, so it was easy to put together.

In happier news, radio station KZPS (Classic Rock) here in Dallas actually
played a DP song other than Woman From Tokyo, Hush, or Smoke on the Water!
At 8:35 AM (that's right, AM!), Dallas time, Wednesday morning, they played
"Lazy." All of it. From Machine Head. While I was on the freeway and just
getting out of traffic where I could drive fast for a while! It was totally
awesome! When it was over, I realized that I really need a tape deck in my
car... really really need one... Have one at work, which helps, but those
drives are awful long...

Anyway, the mail will flow, so here it comes!

Yessss. Thankyou for hitting the nail on the head. I have listened to this
song many times and it is my fave on SBTE, but i felt that something was not
right with it. It is very similar to HS. The lyrics, bassline, solos,
everthing. THANX
Also on thE Blackmore/Dio thing, that would be a very good move for the fans
of the old ritchie don't ya think??

There are at least 2 that I know. Both are japanese, have the full gigs and
from Japan concerts: THE BATTLE (Osaka, 12.03.93) and FLYING IN A PURPLE
DREAM (Fukuoka, 12.05.93). Both have very good sound quality. THE BATTLE is
slightly better and has a fantastic digipack packaging, but it's very
expensive. Great (and I really mean GREAT!!) pictures from the show. =) I
own this boot and I'm very very pleased with it. On the first 2 tracks (HS
ans Ramshackel Man) the sound is a bit low, but it gets better later, being
excellent then.

Hello,

On March 23 I attended a DP concert here in my city. Great show =) They have
been here before twice. First, back in 1991 with JLT doing vocals, then in
1997 with the current line up. STEVE MORSE was the name of the night. What
performance!!!! He seems to be completely pleased making part of the group.
The other guys also seems to very satisfied with him. During his solo, he
surprised everyone including the rest of the band (specially Glover and
Paice who really didn't know what to do). He played a riff of a LED ZEPPELIN
song (which I can't recall the name) and the main riff of IRON MAN, from
BLACK SABBATH. Needless to say that the crowd went nuts.

Cheers,

Alex

Hello,It's certainly a boring time when DP not around.FYI Captain beyond is
suppose to be playing at live oaks in Florida at the E.A.R.T.H.festival on
4-24-99.I won't be there to check it out ,but I think Rhino & some of the
other dues will be there. For you old timers that remember it.My husband
loves
Captain.I was watching VH-1 the other nite and they have this pretty boy
album on sale and they show Coverdale it's hard to believe he was ever in DP
when he looks like such a fruit.I hate when the men dye there hair.Thats why
Gillan rules.lol...................Always in rock....Sue

{Dean "Hey, I liked Coverdale..." Webb: Hey, I liked Coverdale! Although, I
must admit he lost studly points when he started using makeup and hair tint
in the 80's. But, then again, he was crosseyed and plus-sized when he joined
DP in '73... appearance is important to the guy, I guess.
On the other hand, when I get Jon Lord's age, I'll be quite lucky to look as
stately as he does!}

HUGHES,GLENN-THE WAY IT IS $18.95
1999 solo album from Deep Purple's bassist, recorded in Los Angeles &
with
Keith Emerson of ELP now in his band! 12 tracks.

A friend sent me this. Where is this available and on what label? I
haven't seen this at any of the on-line CD stores yet. And how much
contribution did Emerson make to the album -- i.e., is he only on one or
two tracks or is he really "in his band"? Thanks.

Hi!
Just wanted to tell you about an album I've just listened. It's Spock's
Beard's "Day For Night". I really don't know anything about this band, my
brother just got accidentally two copies of that album and gave me one.
Their music sounds like a hybrid between Wakeman-era Yes and Morse-era
Purple, but my brother says it's like Gentle Giant. Anyway, IMO an album
worth a listen!

Just a quote from that April issue of Guitar Magazine:
Q: You left Deep Purple in 1975 to form Rainbow, which lasted until 1984.
What were your favorite Rainbow albums?
RB: The very first one [Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow] was a breath of fresh
air because it moved away from the R&B stuff Purple was doing. I also liked
Rainbow Rising; Ronnie James Dio was singing really well. I keep in touch
with Dio; we might do something in the future.

Shades 1968-1998

I just purchased the magnificent new 4-CD set from Rhino / Warner Archives
(R2 75566). Only one word can describe this new US compilation / boxed set -
WOW! All your (mostly Mark II) favorites are here on the first three discs,
along with a handful of previously unreleased rarities to satisfy any
collector. Disc 4 is a great rundown of the post-Reunion Purple (all
licenced from Polydor/BMG/CMC), with some rarities of its own. This blows
the socks off of nearly every other compilation *ever* released - in both
its scope and inclusion of a number of well-sought rarities new to CD. (To
be fair, there are still a handful of reasons to keep holding on to my copy
of "As & Bs", or "Powerhouse" - but very few).

Here's a rundown of the tracks, to whet your appetite.

Disc I:
1. Hush - from Shades of Deep Purple
2. Help - from Shades of Deep Purple
3. Shadows - demo previously available only on "Anthology" (1984)
4. Love Help Me - instrumental demo previously available only on "Anthology"
(1984)
5. Kentucky Woman (single version) - edit also available on As & Bs
6. Anthem - from Book of Taliesyn
7. River Deep - Mountain High (US single version) - previously uncollected
edit
8. Emmaretta - rarity also available on As & Bs
9. The Bird Has Flown (US single version) - also available on As & Bs
10. Hallelujah - rarity also available on As & Bs
11. Speed King (UK version) - from In Rock, includes "woffle" intro
12. Child In Time - from In Rock
13. Cry Free (95 remix) - outtake, from In Rock 25. Original mix also
available on CD on "Powerhouse"
14. Black Night - full-length UK version, from In Rock 25
15. Jam Stew - outtake, from in Rock 25
16. Into The Fire (live 1970) - from "Scandinavian Nights" / "Live and Rare"
17. No No No (live 1971) - full unedited, from German TV, previously only
available on LP version of Richie Blackmore Anthology Vol. 1

Disc 2
1. Strange Kind Of Woman - from Fireball (US version). This 4-minute version
is slightly longer than the UK single version, found on As & Bs
2. I'm Alone - B-side from Fireball 25
3. Fireball - from Fireball
4. Demon's Eye - from Fireball (UK version) / Fireball 25
5. Anyone's Daughter - from Fireball
6. Fools - from Fireball
7. No One Came - from Freball
8. Freedom (96 remix) - outtake, from Fireball 25. The original mix first

Made In Japan (RH75623)
Who Do We Think We Are (RH75652) [upcoming, I imagine]

RITCHIE/CANDACE IN APRIL '99 BURRN!

Ritchie and Candace graced the cover, along with a full-length interview, in
the April issue of Burrn! This was done to promote their Blackmore's Night
disc, "Under A Violet Moon", from Pony Canyon. It is set for release on
April 21 (PCCY-01377). I have seen solicitations indicating there will be
"special packaging", but I imagine the contents (16 tracks in totum) are the
same worldwide as the Japanese edition.

Warner/Pioneer is touting the new "30: Very Best" of CD. I'm not sure when
the one-CD version (WPCR-10186) was released. They are also pushing the
two-CD version of the same (WPCR-10045). Pictures of special "gold discs" of
the regular (non-25th versions) of their albums also solicited - In Rock
(WPCR-10190), Fireball (WPCR-10191), Machine Head (WPCR-10192), Live In
Japan (WPCR-10193), and Burn (WPCR-10194). Honest to goodness, this company
bores me. UK reissues aside, is there nothing this company does right?

Hi!
Is there anybody out there who knows exactly what
the noise that starts "Fireball" off, is? To me it
sounds like an elevator starting, but that's just
a wild guess. If you have any information on
this, please reply to
per.lundblad(at-a-domain-named)mbox302.swipnet.se

Per

{Dean "Editor" Webb: Well, the band *said* it was an air conditioner, but I
suspect they were hiding a much more fantastic truth. Sounded more like an
early IBM mainframe system firing up, to run the first-ever drum
synthesizer. It didn't work very well, however, which is why Ian Paice
started pounding away so loud at the start of the track: he was trying to
cover up the very bad drumbeats coming from the hunk of Big Iron. The rest
of the band came in just after Paice's start and played the song as planned,
with the exception that Paicey still had to pound away in the breaks to keep
the synthsized drums from getting into the mix. (They were short for
recording time, and couldn't afford another take of that track at the time.)

Ironically, they had an AS/400 system programmed as a drum synthesizer under
the stage at the Paris Olympia for the recording of Live at the Olympia that
they were going to use to help supplement Paice if he started to skip beats
or anything. Paice took it personally (good-natured, but still personally)
and, when the cooling system for the AS/400 kicked on (loud enough to get
picked up on the recording console), he fired off those defiant beats from
Fireball, forcing the band to lead off with that song -- they had planned to
start off with a cover version of Sonny and Cher's classic hit, "I Got You,
Babe". (This is why the band, especially Ian Gillan, sounds a little
hesitant and uneasy at the beginning of the track.) Paice never missed a
beat, though, and the midrange system was switched off midway through Black
Night, when it was clear that Paicey, like the rest of the band, was in top
form that night.

If I'm wrong, feel free to come forward and set me straight. Answers that
say "It really was an air conditioner!" get ignored as their authors didn't
realize that the above was a silly joke. Answers that are imaginative will
get published in the DPD.}
