Well, I'm getting settled into my job OK enough, but I got tons of stuff
coming up. Won't be able to update the website very much in the oh-so-near
future. Wah. On the other hand, I will keep putting the DPD out. Yay. So I
don't see all that much teevee as a result, but it's a sacrifice I really
don't mind making.

Keep those cards and letters coming!

The Sydney radio station MMM recently held a vote of the top 105 rock
albums of all time. The one and only Deep Purple entry, Machine Head, came
in at number 69. Injustice????
Funny but, seeing as mark II formed in 69 and they wrote the song 69 on
Abandon. Coming in at no.1 is was Pink Floyds - Dark side of the Moon.

If you wanna see the list of the top 105 rock albums of all time, go to

You got me there - until I saw the date - April 1st!
But then I felt quite disappointed! Because I would really have liked to
hear "It's Not Unusual" or any other Tom Jones song played by our
friends. And the Purple/Iglesias coupling would have been a real blast!

Imho the King Biscuit is quite worth a listen, but skip the booklet ot at
least drink a beer (or some other beverage of your choice) before reading
it......

BTW: The King Biscuit concert has been in Europe released under the name
"On the wings of a russian Foxbat", afaik both are identical.

Afaik the remasters of the first three MkI-albums will contain some bonus
tracks, some of them live.

And there is one bootleg and one video floating around..........

Dean,
No need to post this. {But I will, anyway} This is for your personal
edification but if you
care to post it I'm sure the record store owner would have no objection to
the free advertising.

The record store I referred to in DPD #56, TOONES located in Allentown,
PA, does not publish a catalogue and only advertises in the local Allentown,
PA newspaper to my knowledge. The owner carries a great selection of hard
to find material for all bands, especially Deep Purple and related artists.
Great selection of Gillan, Blackmore,
JLT, DP Japanese remasters, etc...You name it and he either has it or he can
get it. The prices are right too. If you prefer, you may email me and I'll
provide additional details.

{Dean "Editor" Webb: I'd love more details. Anyone else interested, his
email is just above his post.}

Dear Dean I have been thinking of starting a web site.
The format being an e-mail listing of Deep Purple Fans who wish
to list themselves. Seperated by countries to bring more fans
together who do not know of fans in their area?? What do you
think about that idea?

Yes there is one called "The Battle"
http://www.uni-ulm.de/~ifengler/purple/battle.htm

I don't know how it was in Japan 93 with Satriani, but they was great with
him in 94 when they tour Europe. I saw them in Gothenburg, Sweden. Here you

Sorry Nick, but I think it could have been a mistake, the promise was to
credit everybody who had signed their pictures, if they use the pictures.
Maybe they used your pictures in some way, what do I know. Anyway, this is
what Colin wrote:

Yeah, BJL is a great album, a must have. But if you consider to buy a album
with Glenn Hughes I would go for his new album "The way it is". Here is what
I wrote a few days ago.

"When I had the chance to listen on Glenn Hughes new album "The way it is"
over a month ago, it grab me immediately. I had heard rumors that Glenn will
do a rock album, but when I was listen on it, it was so much more, it was
funk, soul etc. I said to myself, this is the best solo album Glenn have
done. Every song was strong on it's own. In his other albums there have been
some great songs but also some weaker songs. But it's not only strong songs,
there is a redline through the album. A good combination of songs.
Everything very nice done. From the opening song "The way it is" through the
heavy "You kill me", beautiful "Curse", a funky cover of Jimi Hendrix's
Freedom, to the ballad "Don't look away". I could say something good about
every song. His voice have never been better and there is something that
strike me on this album, he have left his past on this album. It's a album
which will take him into the next century, not back to the 70's or 80's. But
for me, now when I finally have the album and have had the chance to listen
on it a few days, this is not only the best solo album from Glenn, this must
be the best album Glenn have ever been involved in. That's the way it is."

Question: On the list I often see these _|_ and /-\ codes. Can someone
please tell me what they stand for?

Lately I was in the car with my son (5). He wanted to hear not his own,
but my DP cassettes. Ever since that day his favourite song is The Gypsy
(Stormbringer). He's often singing the guitar riff of the song. Later he
asked me the name of the band, I asked him repeat after me, Deep Purple,
my daughter (2) repeated faster than him Dep Puple.

There is at least one bootleg from a concert in Japan. My advice, try to
find someone you can trade with if you want a copy, the DP bootleg
market prices are terribly high.
>What was it like?? Joe Satriani.......it just must have been great! I
missed the DP concert with JS myself, in Holland Uriah Heep was doing
the support act, so that must have been triple fun!

Re: From the Black Sabbath list:

This is kind of funny, my interest in Deep Purple came back when I
suddenly found out that Steve Morse joined DP. So while some lost
interest because their favorite banjo player left, I wildly gained
interest because my favourite banjo player had joined DP! Did you hear
Steve's Stressfest? Man, great, fantastic album! Also I can't wait to
hear a new DP album with Steve.

Nico.

April is a cruel time

Hi Purple People!
I was convince that DP never performed "Anyone's Daughter" live in 1971.
tours, but...
Now I have in my hands tape from "Mayfair Suite", Birmingham, 24.06.71.
where DP plays "Anyone's Daughter". O boy, it sounds superb. Mr. Lord using
his Rhodes electric piano and MIB have done a nice job on his Fender.
It is very interesting to hear how band plays extraordinary song from
Fireball LP.
I think that on tour '93 band was playing that tune because of fans (nice of
them), but you should hear this promotional version from time where it
belongs.
Rest of the gig (SKing,SKOW,DEye,PIBlack,MR,CITime) is terrible edited and
only song which isn't is "Anyone's Daughter".
I'm about to copy this tape on CDR, so, if anyone like to trade let me know.

Are there any bootlegs going around that have joe
playing with DP in 1993, or was anyone at one of the shows??? What was
it like??

Reply:
Well I think that atleast one bootleg exists, called Welcome Joe....i think
it was a 2-cd.
I didn't had the money to buy it at the time and when I got it I could'nt
found it.I saw it in a Swedish catalogue called Record Heaven.

I also saw DP once with Joe at Karlshamnsfestivalen (June -93)which now is
renamed Swedish Rock Festival, they're gonna play there this year again 11-12
June.It will be the third time they play this Festival and I've seen them
all times(of course I will be there this year).I'm proud to say I once
played there myself(drums) not on the same stage, but anyhow feels nice to
have played on the same Festival as the all time kings.Actually we did a
cover of Strange Kinda Woman too.

About the consert with Joe,I can say that I've seen every tour since the
wonderful reunion(except the Joe-Lynn Turner era, good LP but more Rainbow
than DP)and the band sparkled more than they had done in years.
Blackie has been and always will be my fav. DP guitarist but his not a fun
person and when he drags the band down in a sad mood I think it's much
better with another g.Satriani played like the pro he is and the band
sounded better than they had in years,Gillan singin' like a god,the rest
doin' their magic things. And this was also the start to changin' the
playlist and takin' in songs that they haven't done live in a long time
(maybe never).

Ok they started off as usual with Highway Star (now they don't)but I recall
they played Anyone's Daughter (FB),
Pictures Of Home(IR) for instance and I never heard them live before.I also
remember they doin' a fantastic version of JS's Satch Boogie(Paice really
showed us how to handle the sticks).I think that this concert was the
greatest since PS and HOBL tours 'cos the band seemed to enjoy them self
much more and ever since then
I think they have had much more sparkle so this was really a turning point
in DP history and I'm proud to have witnessed it.I love the way they play
nowadays with Morse, the are really into it and havin' fun again, just like
the old days.I saw them a couple of months ago in Copenhagen and as usual
they were brilliant, although they didn't play some of my fav. from
Abandon....would love to hear Evil Louie and why not She Was (what a
brilliant solo with Lord and Morse playin close to each other and than
connect,Paice firin' up the drums and at the end Glover throws in his
bassline,wow thats outstanding).

Have anyone heard them playin' one of those live?

And Gillan what a singer,I think he is back to the force he had before,in
some years between Ps,Hobl he didn't sound as powerful in conserts as he
used to, but ever since Satch-era I think he's as good as ever, havin' that
wonderful power not only in the higher register.I love the way he push those
lower notes out, like on the Fireball rec.Just listen to the singin' on
Fools,Demon's eye for ex.Some of the best singin' performance ever done by
anyone.Well he's back and Sometimes I feel Like Screamin'!!!!

5.6 billion versions of the truth under one roof .......some revelation! Not
bad at lyrics either!

BTW does anyone know where to get shades like Lord's??? Wanna have a pair!!
If someone knows please let me know!

Best Regards to all of you childs in time!

Micke

Difficult to Cure I think was a bit more British if you will then, SBTE --
maybe more Bad Company/Free then Foreigner. The overall "sound" and/or
"feel" was better on DTC. The instrumental were strong and even the most
commercial song, I surrender had some decent bits to it. SBTE on the
otherhand (it's always that other hand that gets in to trouble) was much too
foreigner-like production wise (Power, Stone Cold). It was much too slick
sounding and let's face it, a song like Tight Squeeze was L.A. Connection
regurgitated with bad lyrics. Power was a Foreigner does Woman from Tokyo
and Death Alley Driver was a song you write after listening to Highway Star
one too many times...

Bent out of Shape went back to the DTC formula in terms of production and
use of instrumentals (also a better drummer than SBTE I might add), but I
think the band had run out of enough ideas by that point to have a
completely solid album. Still, they were nominated for a Grammy for one of
the instrumentals that year (unfortunately it was Sting's year) Okay, okay
so I'm cynical and opinionated...I am a musician aren't I???
