Busy, busy, busy!

I've got the main pages in place at the website, along with their top-level
pictures. I have a few more tricks to pull regarding the ads at Geocities,
but will have that issue taken care of real soon.

Then comes the hard part of reorganizing the reviews, interviews, stuff
like that. On that line, one further note: I'll start posting the
interviews to the website for one and all to see w/o having to email me
separately. Give me some time and it'll be all ready to go!

OK, on to the list!

Dear Friend,
I would like to join your list. Also, I have just moved to Australia
from America. Purple is coming here next month, if you can provide me
with any Purple related to Australia that would be great. Tommorow I
start a radio program on a community station. It will consist of mostly
classic rock. I heard that the latest CD was being released here is that
so and if so what is the single? Thank you, be well, and please visit my
web-site. http://www.angelfire.com/md/jesusorhell/default.html

Morjens Mulkerot,
someone mentioned that Glenn used to sing in Sabbath...he was right - I
almost forgot Seventh Star...anyway, does anyone have live tapes with
Glenn singing Sab material? I have one, but it's not live with audience
- more like reheasals or something like that...I'd like to have real
concert material with Glenn (or Ray Gillen)singing. I have some Sab
material with Gillan too...if someone is willing to trade.
please write to haistavittu(at-a-domain-named)hotmail.com - don't want to bother all the

i've been listening to some of my old vinyl today and i just got done
listening to tony carey's "some tough city" and it's quite good, the
sound switches back and forth from a foreigner kind of sound to a
springsteen sound, i recommend this album as it's quite good. cdnow,
amazon, and musicblvd all have it, plus his other stuff, but they're
only available on german and sweden imports, musicblvd seems to have the
cheapest prices.

peace!

Subject: Random Rick Emerson thoughts

This "Rick Emerson" thing just got mi mind going. I'd once wondered
what Dio Purple would have sounded like, and this just males me think:
what would happen if Rick Wakeman or Keith Emerson replace Jon Lord?

Rick Wakeman certainly proved his worth with Yes; he could play solid
no-nonsense stuff ("Fragile") or atmospheric, avant-garde progressive
rock ("Close to the Edge"). He also proved that he could play with a
more straight-forward rock band on Black Sabbath's "Sabbra Cadabra."
Not only that, but he had a warm personality and a head for classical
music; perhaps a disadvantage would be his love for effects, unlike
Jon Lord's preference for the classic "Hammond sound."

Then would be Keith Emerson. He'd probably be a good match for
Ritchie as far as personality goes (they'd probably kill each other
soon after a couple of rehearsals due to overblown egos), but I think
he demonstrated his skills perfectly on ELP's "Karn Evil 9." Then
again, ELP was always seeking to be more and more progressive, so
Keith probably wouldn't be that happy with Deep Purple's style. It
would be interesting though.

And what about Atomic Rooster's Vincent Crane? Ok, so maybe that's
not as common knowledge, but what do you think about Emerson and
Wakeman Purple? And what if you put Dio in there? This is getting
very upsetting.

Peace,
Marcelo Silveyra

{Dean "What-if" Webb: Or, on the other hand, what if Lord replaced
Wakeman/Emerson in their respective bands? LLP would definitely not be as
*flashy* as it was with Emerson's souped-up Jerry Lewis style, but would
have more of a stronger burn to it. As for Yes, the man 50% responsible for
"Wring That Neck" going on for 30 minutes at a time would fit right into
that bunch. Anyone got other scenarios they'd like to share?}

Subject: New Live And Rare

Hi Dean

Sorry I have'nt been much of a contributor lately - the SA Rock Digest is
taking a lot of my time, y'know!

Anyway here's so info on New Live And Rare...

Originally released on vinyl in Japan in 1980., re-issued on CD in August
1989 on
TEICHIKU RECORDS (METAL MANIA), catalogue number: 18DN-33

Tracks:

HUSH (LIVE) from CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA opening set
PAINTED HORSE from WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE! sessions
CRY FREE from IN ROCK sessions
CHILD IN TIME (LIVE) from CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA opening set
STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN US album version (4:03), slightly longer than UK
single version (3:49) - I never knew about this until I got this CD!
I'M ALONE b-side of STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN single 1971
WHEN A BLIND MAN CRIES b-side of NEVER BEFORE, from MACHINE HEAD sessions
WRING THAT NECK (LIVE) from CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA opening set

My parents bought this for me in the UK in 1992 whilst on holiday there (I
live in South Africa) - my brief to them was "...any CD with When A Blind
Man Cries on it..."

WABMC was a radio hit in SA and was available on the compilation LP MK I &
MK II released here in 1974. See http://www.new.co.za/~currin/marki.html

It was almost as big here as SOTW. And, boy, was I pleased when they
included it in the setlist for the 1995 SA "Masters Of Rock" tour with
Uriah Heep.

See http://www.new.co.za/~currin/dpsasetlist.html

They also played it as a live unplugged instrumental on a SA radio show in
March 1995 - this was the DP Trio (Jon, Steve and Roger).

There is not much of a connection between the CD New Live And Rare and the
3 EP singles released in the UK in the late 70s except for the title and a
few tracks...

NEW, LIVE & RARE (EP) released in 1977, reached UK#31
BLACK NIGHT (LIVE) from MADE IN JAPAN concerts
PAINTED HORSE from WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE! sessions
WHEN A BLIND MAN CRIES from MACHINE HEAD sessions,
  b-side of NEVER BEFORE

NEW, LIVE & RARE VOLUME 2 (EP) released in 1978, reached UK#45
BURN single edit
CORONARIAS REDIG from BURN sessions, b-side of BURN
and MIGHT JUST TAKE YOUR LIFE
MISTREATED (LIVE) from MADE IN EUROPE
  interpolating ROCK ME BABY

NEW, LIVE & RARE VOLUME 3 (EP) released in 1980, reached UK#48
SMOKE ON THE WATER (LIVE) from IN CONCERT 1972
GRABSPLATTER see http://www.new.co.za/~currin/grab.html for more than you
ever wanted to know about this obscure track
THE BIRD HAS FLOWN a BBC session recording from late 1969

Regarding Rick Emerson - I caught this joke the first time I heard it! My
Big 3 favourite keyboardists were always Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson and
Jon Lord, so I was glad to hear Jon Lord actually make this "chirp".
("chirp" is SA slang for...well, a chirp, I guess!)

Your link is up on the SA DP page, as well as in a few places on the DP Web
Index.

I saw someone mention Rarities as well recently, take a look at
http://www.new.co.za/~currin/Deeper.html

If you think this e-mail is full of self promotion - you're right!

Keep up the good work! Always a good read, and as you know an inspiration
to me for my SA Rock Digest.

Cheers

Brian

Subject: Zep rant / 2 DP members in Whitesnake/ Rick Emerson

Hello Purps from around the world!

Our editor wrote:

> and a Zeppelin with a
>keayboardist is a Deep Purple,

Oh nooooooooooooo! I take offence to this. Not trying to start a flame
war or anything, and not trying to sound stuffy, but I always found Led
Zeppelin to be drunken frauds with a nancy-boy-{private parts}-rocker
vocalist who
sounds like he got his {private parts} caught in his zipper. I always found
Jimmy Page to be an overrated hack, John Bonham would have been better
off pounding on dirty rugs, and John Paul Jones to be the ONLY talent in
that band. :) The legions and legions of garbage Led Zep influenced
should speak volumes about their talentless archives(i.e. Kingdom
Come(not Arthur Brown's version), Fastway, Cinderella, Foghat, etc...)
Just IMHO of course. Don't shoot me! I love B.O.C., Deep Purple(of
course), Thin Lizzy(another underrated band), Black Sabbath(with Ozzy,
Dio, Gillan, and some Martin), The Poor Man's Deep Purple(Uriah Heep),
and all..., but Led Zeppelin never appealed to me. Deep Purple's
capabilities far outshine those of Zeppelin's. End of rant. :)

Then, Benny Holmstrom wrote:

>Yeah and at the same time (almost) there was 3 DP members in
Whitesnake.

There were 3 DP members in Whitesnake. On the "...in The City"(the name
of the LP escapes me at this time, it was live), there was Lord, Paice,
and Coverdale.

In conclusion, Richard Poustie wrote:

>RICK Wakeman and
>Keith EMERSON
>
>two talented keyboard-players but second division in comparison with
the
>great man himself.
>
>Shame on you!

Hey Richard! Try telling this to all the subscibers on the Gentle Giant
"On-Reflection" list. You'll get hate mail and death threats! :) Knowing
from experience, I did this once. Just because Emerson sticks knives in
his keyboards, they think he's a God. And just because Wakeman wears a cape
and plays 15 different keyboards (just for show), they think he's the
master. I say: "Fly away in that cape, Rick",
and leave the keyboards to Master Lord.

...I'm a blind man

{Dean "Red Ink" Webb: Just a few edits here to keep it Victorian. I don't
like getting these things bouncing back because some guy's email service at
work filters on content. Rants on content filters go for another list,
though, so I'll end here.}

{By the way, I *like* Zeppelin. They ripped off some of the best blues
lines around and eventually did some good stuff of their own. I think they
get overplayed on the radio (and DP underplayed), but that's the way the
world goes. Life in the big city and all that.}

Subject: Signed Abandon on Auction

There's a signed copy of Abandon on auction to support this concert.

On current count there are only about 10 non-accounted for tickets for
NEARfest. So if you want to come to NEARfest, send a check NOW! Some more
seats may open up on March 17, if I do not have checks from the reservation
list folks then, the reservations expire, and I will sell remaining tickets
in the order checks are received. I'm sorry to do this, I just need to be
as fair as possible at this point! Weekend passes are $46, payable to
NEARfest at NEARfest, c/o Rob LaDuca, 58 East Center St., Shavertown PA
18708.
To help NEARfest short term and long term, we got another goody to auction
(not too many of these left!). It's a fully autographed copy of Deep
Purple's latest CD "Abandon" (signed by Gillan, Lord, Steve Morse, Paice,
Glover). It's not prog, just good-old-fashioned dynamite hard rock with
some progressive flourishes from Morse and Lord. The current bid is $50,
and the auction will run until Friday 3/12 at 4pm. Thanx to all who have
contributed to NEARfest by either winning an auction or just upping the
ante! :)
A sellout is imminent, in all likelihood by March 17. Please order your
tickets now if you want to come to the first NEARfest! Yes, we will get a
bigger hall next year! Frankly we were only expecting 300, and we are
delighted by the response to this new festival!
Peace, Rob LaDuca

Hello All,

When I was a kid I loved Deep Purple in particular (there was something
in each Mk2 member that I wanted to emulate) but also, Hendrix, Argent,
Quincy Jones (TV theme stuff), Yes, Santana, Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath,
Slade, Sly and the family Stone, Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd, Earth Wind and
Fire, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Atomic Rooster, Orleans, Free, Wishbone
Ash, CCS, Clapton, Climax Blues Band, George Harrison, John Lennon, Isley
Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Allman Bros., David Bowie, Traffic, Redbone,
Chuck Berry, John Kongos (one song! -Tokoloshe Man), Badfinger, Wings,
Roxy Music, ELO, Joe Walsh, T-Rex, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Edgar Winter - all
these people made me feel gooooooood to be alive. They also caused me to
become hooked on music and give up studying for my secondary level school
exams but that's another story;)

Why is it that today one apparently needs to be either stupid or racist
or both to be an appreciator of many of the above, and that to like 'one'
kind of music is seen as a betrayal by fans of 'another' kind?

All of the above listed were borne into a time when one needed to be BOTH
musically gifted AND seriously cool and original in approach and attitude
to cut it. It shows!

Sooooooo;

Why does this sort of prog never reflect these points? Why would Lemmy
cite Rap music as killing off his kind of music? Have record companies
not now penned artists and their followers into sheepish categories where
one exists independently of the other? Is Rap not ironically (given this
comment) the only alternative style of music left today? Why not blame
Steps (or their producers) for example - a manufactured little UK outfit,
whiter then white, playing somewhat mediocre covers of the BeeGees and
others? Sheeesh! I'm sure Lady Thatcher would approve wholeheartedly!

____________Anyone remember the words of Argent's Tragedy?_____________

{Dean "Me too!" Webb: I freaked out everyone at work when I finished
playing Mob Rules and put on The O'Jays. "Not ethnically possible!" cried
not a few. For them, I used Sly and the Family Stone. Allman Brothers would
have been just as good, but not as obvious.}

Subject: Ritchie: angel or devil?

Hi all!

I saw the text below in Annie Haslam's site, in the "Links" section. Annie
was the vocalist of Renaissance and I love her
voice. She says:

"Several years back, Ritchie Blackmore came to one of my shows in upstate
New York. I was very surprised...what a
lovely person he is. Anyway, he loved the show, in particular "Ocean
Gypsy," which he proceeded to record on his most
recent recording, Shadow of the Moon. His wife Candice sings on the CD,
and their version of one of my favourite
Renaissance songs is very beautiful! I thoroughly recommend a listen, the
whole CD is magnificient!"

Another example of how opinions about Ritchie can be so different. What is
the truth about his personality? Personally
I think the truth changes everyday. Anyway, his amazing music is what
really matters for me.

Cheers!

Luiz Bezerra

{Dean "Set the record straight" Webb: I know he's got a bad-boy reputation,
but Mr. Blackmore seems to be a (shudder) nice guy deep down. He can have a
fit or two, but he's still on quite good terms with the rest of the band
(from what I hear). Black Suede may not be good for me, but he's still a
Smooth Dancer. (BTW, I loved that song even more when I found out it was
Ian's note to Ritchie...)}
