>From the Editor, Dean Webb: dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com

This issue is specially dedicated to Rick Emerson, the greatest keyboardist
that ever played with Deep Purple. How sad that the only credits he ever
got were when he introduced the band in live shows while filling in for Jon
Lord. :-)

There were a tonne of responses to the Rick Emerson question, so I lumped
them all at the end. Thanks to everyone who replied and also thanks for
there not being as much sarcasm as when I asked about SIFLS. When I think
of that episode, well, sometimes I feel like screaming about it.

On the four-year-old front, I have two more bits on that. My son continues
to deepen in his appreciation of Deep Purple. One day, this Barney-like
show that I can't stand was on and Calvin wanted to watch it. I said sure,
but would he like to hear "Smoke on the Water" while the kids danced and
sang? He thought about it and said "Sure!" I put on side 2 of Machine Head
and let it roll as I hack out another digest. He loved it.

Then, last night, I was making a mix tape of music in and around 1976.
Calvin was hanging out with me and listening along. I would ask him on each
song if he liked it. He said "yeah" to all of them, but the ones he
*really* liked, he wanted to see the album cover for and grin estatically
over. He liked "Don't Fear the Reaper" from Blue Oyster Cult. He didn't
really get into the Earth, Wind and Fire I put on after that. When I put on
"Comin' Home" from CTTB, though, he went wild! No prompting on my part, but
he just went nuts over that Bolin riff! He had the biggest grin as he
looked over the LP cover, checking out the pictures and all... he laughed
his head off when he saw the back: "Dad, they *drank it all!*" After that
one, he wasn't too impressed with the other stuff, even though I had some
of my favorites in there. Not even Kiss' "Rock and Roll All Nite" didn't
get him jumping as much as "Comin' Home."

"That's my boy," said the proud father as his son played air guitar as he
jumped off the sofa...

I'm making a push to spiff up the website and get it reported in more
search engines and linked up to other sites. I think we have a good thing
going here, so I'm going to up the ante some more. I'll move the $%^&
Geocities banner ads to the bottom of the pages, expand the META tags
section, and re-do the graphical outlay of the pages. This will not be an
overnight thing, to say the least.

At any rate, if you have a site, especially a DP-related site, please feel
free to link me up at your site: I'll be overjoyed to link your site from
my links page (which, itself, will get the ol' facelift soon).

In other news, I'd like to put forward that I'm considering doing a
rock'n'roll card game. I don't know if it will be based on poker or Magic
(TM), but I do know I want the goal to be to build a hand to beat other
players... Get a guitarist, bass player and a drummer for a Grand Funk, a
Grand Funk with a vocalist is a Led Zeppelin, and a Zeppelin with a
keayboardist is a Deep Purple, the king daddy of all hands. (A Royal Deep
Purple would be any of the lineups of DP...) If you have ideas,
suggestions, kibitzing, send it to the list and we'll bat the idea around a
bit.

Now on to the issue at hand!

Yes
The Sao Paulo show was amazing, and there is a rumour down here that the
show from next March 24th will be broadcast one week after.

March 3
Deep Purple and related bands on UK Channel 4 Saturday 6th March
Chrysalis Television, on the back of the success of two previous
documentaries "The Glam Top 10" (1995) and "The Disco Top 10" (1997) have
been commissioned by Channel 4 (UK) to produce a whole series celebrating
other musical genres. The first one of the series, to be broadcast on
Saturday, 6 March 1999 at 9pm (a great slot) is "The Heavy Metal Top 10".
Based loosely on British chart success, this will be a major celebration of
hard rock acts, including, of course, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake etc.
Sally Blower at Chrysalis Television told us: "We have interviewed Ritchie
Blackmore, Jon Lord, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Graham Bonnett, Ronnie Dio,
Micky Moody, Bernie Marsden, Joe Lynn Turner, David Coverdale and therefore
hope to give a well-rounded portrait of the band's history and stories.
However, please be warned that this 90 minute documentary has to cover an
awful lot of ground - and 10 bands - so each band is somewhat limited to
about 7 minutes."
Thanks to Sally Blower at Chrysalis Television for the info.

Just curious: Shouldn't this read re-release since the Sarabande CD is
sitting happily on my shelf for quite some time??

I've got both and I like "Sufficiently Breathless" better than the first
one.

Here I like the first one better, it really sounds purple in places, more
like a fourth MkI album than anything else.

Hi Purplephiles

It is Lord, the Rick Emerson comments are just a bit of humor from the
boys.
The prememinent keyboarists in those days were Rick Wakeman and Keith
Emerson.

BTW Nico, Borg, Tom Swoboda and the person who I was in the process of
completing a trade of some Purp MK IV for some Zep, please get in touch
with
me, I lost all my old files.

Cheers

Eric

'Rick Emerson' is Jon's wacky sense of humour, being a jokey amalgamation
of Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman and ELP's keyboardist Keith Emerson. Hey,
maybe in the future a new keyboard player could be genetically created from
Jon, Rick and Keith... that would be the keyboardist to end all
keyboardists!

Hmm, on second thoughts if they could genetically create a keyboard player
then I guess it could also apply to guitarists... would the world ever be
ready for a guitarist created from Ritchie and Ted Nugent?!?!

Its Jon Lord, of course, and its a joke - the two (other) most popular
keyboard players at the time were naturally *Rick* Wakeman (Yes) and Keith
*Emerson* (ELP).

You guys never heard of Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson?

At the time of "LiL", they and Jon usually occupied the top 3 slots
in the "keyboards" section of the music magazine polls.

Dean & Heikki,

You're clearly not keyboard lovers!

When Jon calls himself Rick Emerson he's having a self-deprecating little
joke about:

RICK Wakeman and
Keith EMERSON

two talented keyboard-players but second division in comparison with the
great man himself.

Shame on you!

Richard

In DP List #50, there as some question about "Rick Emerson" - I assume it's
Lord having some fun by noting the 2 "other" keyboardists of the 70's, Rick
Wakeman and Keith Emerson - just like Jeff Beck could introduce himself as
"Ritchie Page" or something, right?

That is funny that there is a "Deep Purple - New, Live, and Rare" release.
I
have "Deep Purple: Live & Rare", on Relativity Records, which is the same
as
"Scandanavian Nights," and also "Deep Purple: Rare Live," a Japanese CD
that
samples from "BBC In Concert," "Live In London," "New Live, and
Rare,"(!!!!)
"Scandanavian Nights," "Foxbat," and "MK III The Final Concerts." Yeeesh!!!
I
LOVE the fact that Purp releases so much of its live archives - cheaper and
better produced/packaged than bootlegs - but it is tought o keep them
straight!!!

Speaking of which, are the plans to release a line of "official bootlegs"
starting with Liverpool 1976 still on? Here's ONE "yes" vote anyway.

Someone mentioned Red Sun Red, and it brought back a great memory of going
to
see Sabbath on the 7th Star tour, I guess it was - 1986? - at New Haven.
Glenn
Hughes was to be their singer at the time, but the guy who came out and
sang
was even better; he could handle the Dio stuff like a dream, which is NOT
easy, and then some. It was Ray Gillen, who should've been a star. Sad
story.

I got mail from Jim Wilmoth:
"You cross Rick Wakeman with Keith Emerson and you get Rick Emerson -- a
tongue in cheek sort of thing."

I had a feeling it had something to do with ELP's Emerson, but didn't get
Yes' Wakeman. Or are there some other suggestions?

50th Digest, congratulations! Your desperate(?) call for mail seems to have
woken us up. Great long Digests surprisingly often.

Hi everybody,
"Rick Emerson joke" taped in Live In London album refers to Mr. Rick
Wakeman and Mr. Keith Emerson, two of the best keyboard players all
around the world. I remembered, these days '73-'74, magazines (Melody
Maker, Billboard, etc...) have listed the best musicians annually -I do
not know how- and most of the time Rick was the first, Keith was the
second - or vice versa- and Jon was the next after those guys. Honestly,
there were no other keyboard player who can push the list then. Jon, has
never been first as I remembered.
That's all boys.
I voted for Rock Weekend in Holland for Nico, did you ?
Cheers.
Altan
