DEEP PURPLE DIGEST #5

In this issue:
Mark IV in the studio and live
Frustration with live "Woman From Tokyo"
Language guides for Deep Purple band members
I knew Deep Purple ruled when...
6 shades of Purple

[Ed's note: We got a bunch of new subscribers and not enough threads. I'm
going to try to get some off the ground. New people: review albums,
concerts, posters, ANYTHING! DP-related bands are OK topics, as are anything
else with the letters "D" or "P" in them, provided "eep" and "urple" are
near the "D" and "P"... SUBMIT, MORTALS!] :-)

Subject: Come Taste The Band - MkIV Live

Seeing as CTTB has started a theme on the Digest, I thought I'd expand the
Theme To Mark IV live Shows.

CTTB I enjoy as much as any DP album & I'd rate it a 9, Great Rock Songs &
very tight playing. But a Times the Tour to me was an embarrasment,
(although I have to Qualify this by saying that I never saw the Line-Up
Live, & my evidence is based on about 10 Official & Non-Official Gigs).

Let's start with the main protagonist:- Tommy Bolin, I'm told this man is a
great guitar player,to me he's Average. Of all the shows I've heard he
couldn't even play the riff to Burn, anyway near properly I Know he had his
Drug Problems, but i have trouble accepting this all the time, & for that
God awful Guitar effect he was using.

David Coverdale, Very Hit & Miss on the Tour at times he was more shouting
than singing, I've read that for the Rises Over Japan Gig 15/12/75 he'd had
too much to drink the night before & that he'd go off stage to be sick
between numbers.

Glenn Hughes, Great Bass playing & what an amazing Voice, (Today the Finest
Voice in Rock) but again it was touch & go whether the notes would crack.
Anybody who's seen his shows in the last few years will know that he's the
Guvnor.

Jon Lord, Carried the Shows Musically, did most of the decent solos & was &
is a Star

Ian Paice, at the time at his peak (75-77) anybody got the Rises Over Japan
Video, ignore the rest just watch Paicey.

Does anybody disagree, I'm more than willing to be proved wrong
I'd say that my favorite show that I've heard is Melbourne 25/11/76,
although some think otherwise, perhaps it's just an opinion like the above.

OK, so what's up with Gillan? Every time I get an album with a live version
of "Woman From Tokyo" on it, he doesn't sing anything prior to the quiet bit
in the middle. That, or the album was marked wrong and it's the studio
version.

Did he EVER sing that lovely middle part outside the studio? If he can't hit
the notes, make it an audience participation thing, have Jon Lord play it
with a pedal effect, something, just get through that pretty little part and
the monster solos after it. Not singing it at all is not an option, as DP
has it listed on enough albums to have set my expectations to hear a live
version of WFT.

It's kind of like in "Peanuts" when Lucy offers to hold the football for
Charlie Brown's place-kick... grrrrrrrr...

Should someone on the list know Mr. Gillan well enough, beat an answer out
of him. He's accountable for his actions and I want justice or the whole
live version of WFT, not with a quick digression and exit via Buddy Holly.

Language Guides for Deep Purple
The guys in the band go lots of places, right? Well, I noticed that we
have fans from all over the world on this list and we might be able to help
out Deep Purple in their travels.
I invite all those who are fluent in languages other than English to
step forward and translate the following phrases into the languages you
know. The past and current members of DP could get into situations anywhere
in the world where they would need to rely on their skills with the local
tongue to save themselves.

The phrases: (feel free to recommend your own phrases and translations)
IAN GILLAN: Can we have everything louder than everything else?
May I please have some more hard liquor?
Have you any throat spray I can borrow?
What are the words to the song I am singing?
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

ROGER GLOVER: I am a producer. Show me to the mixing board.
Where did the rest of the band go? I want to join them.

RITCHIE BLACKMORE: I just fired my singer. Please get Joe Lynn Turner on the
telephone.
Get that camera away from me or I will ram my guitar up the lens.
I told you to get that camera away from me.
If you can glue my passport back together, I'll continue the tour.

DAVID COVERDALE: Ooooo-whoa-ohhh!
'ere's a song for ya!

JON LORD: Anyone want to hear "Fur Elise" one more time?
How does my solo end? I seem to have forgotten.

IAN PAICE: I want to play the drums.
Please show me to the drums.
OK, one more beer, then I play the drums.

STEVE MORSE: (He seems to be the big, funny guy that doesn't say much. He
probably could get by with simple gestures and the occasional solo.)

Anyway, I'll be thankful for any translations and other suggestions for
phrases DP guys need to know. For another idea on important phrases, see the
"I can eat glass project" at http://hcs.harvard.edu/~igp/glass.html.

Puedo comer vidrio; no me hace dano. (The n in dano should have a squiggly
line over it...)

I knew Deep Purple ruled when...

This thread is for reminescences of when you first realized that DP was THE
BAND!!! Not necessarily the only band, but one of THE BANDs that you knew
of. Let me share you my IKDPRW... experience.

It was 1981. I had finished buying all of Led Zeppelin's records and I
needed another band to collect. Someone at school had expressed disgust when
I talked about LZ, saying they were one of those horrible noisy bands like
Deep Purple. I figured if she couldn't stand DP, they must be good, so I
immediately resolved to go and buy me some of their stuff.

I went to the music store and found Deepest Purple. Looking it over, I
noticed Woman From Tokyo (studio version), Highway Star, Space Truckin', and
Smoke on the Water. Cool, thought I, at least 4 good songs on this disc. I
bought it.

On side one, track four, it hit me. Child in Time, all 10 minutes and 15
seconds of it hit me with full force and left me reeling in its wake. Wow,
dude. They were cool. I was pretty sure they ruled then, but more proof was
in store.

A few purchases later and I was face to face with Made in Japan. I noticed
how it had only one song, Space Truckin, on side four. It had to be good. I
was *so* right.

I was rejoicing all the way up to that false ending. I heard the applause
and got up to change the record when the band started up again, full force,
slamming away , pounding the music out of the air around them. I was in
shock up to the final, dying note of Jon Lord's Hammond... as the sounds
finally faded, I found myself adrift in a sea of awe. Faith had been
replaced by knowledge: Deep Purple truly ruled. They were THE BAND.
Listening to the grand finale of MIJ is still a pseudo-religious experience
for me, as I never cease to be amazed by the raw, sonic triumph it is.

DP rules for reasons mentioned above. What's your reason?

6 Shades of Purple

Everyone in the world is 6 people, all direct associations, away from
everyone else. The same is true for bands. DP has had so many distinguished
alumni and associations with other musicians that darn near any band can be
linked back to them. (A similar thread is going on on the Black Sabbath
list, but I helped fuel that thread, so I'll do some stuff with it here, as
it is fun, educational, and informative.)

Here's the game: link the following bands back to Deep Purple. Try to be as
obscure as possible. Avoid obvious links if something interesting presents
itself. The links must go through band personnel, producers, or engineers.
Covering songs or touring together is not sufficient grounds for a
connection.

Here are the bands/performers to link back: (some easy, some tough)
Iron Maiden (trivial)
XTC (Roger Glover liked them, but that's not link enough)
Frank Sinatra
Fairport Connection
Soft Machine
Steely Dan
Def Leppard
(these should be tougher)
Tiny Tim
Bill Clinton
Igor Stravinsky
Dr. Demento

Good luck and feel free to suggest tough links of your own!
(PS- I don't have the answers for any of the above off the top of my head:
I'll have to work on them, too.)
