Hi Dean, I was interested to read Heikki's post regretting the passing of vinyl records, as this is something that's slowly been dawning on me too. I remember buying "Perfect Strangers", (after previously hiding it in the Val Doonigan section so that no-one else could buy it first!) The eager anticipation of waiting for the music to start and hearing the crackles at the beginning of the record when I put it on my dad's old radiogram for the first time are still so vivid in my mind. However it's not just the crackles at the beginning that I like about vinyl (I don't like crackles anywhere else mind you, my version of "Smoke" always jumps on the chorus... "Sm-ater... Fire in the sky!") but the conciseness of vinyl records seem to make much more powerful musical statements IMHO. The days of four tracks on side 1, three on side 2... at least you knew that you stood a pretty good chance of getting the absolute best of the crop, an epic on side 2 and no 'fillers' or 'padding'. For instance, if killer albums like "In Rock", "Machine Head" or "Rainbow Rising" were stretched out by today's standards (i.e. by another 20 minutes at least) I wonder whether we'd hold them in such reverence as we do. It seems to me that the intensity of the experience is being lost by record companies who want to pack as much 'product' onto CD as possible, regardless of quality, flow and concept. (I guess there are always exceptions to the rule, "Perpendicular" being one such example, a masterpiece throughout... all 62 mins 30 secs of it.) Maybe it's the thought of those great big gatefold sleeves, the illustrated dust jackets and the huge pictures that is making me look through rose-tinted spectacles, (love the band shots on "Rainbow Rising" and "Straight between the Eyes"... priceless!) but I wonder if anyone else agrees that to combine the benefits of CDs with the aesthetics of vinyl would be mighty fine innovation. All the best. Hell, I'm 23 and I feel like an old man these days. I have diverse musical tastes, but HR/HM is my passion. I run a college radio show spotlighting DP, BS, IM, VH, Scorps, etc etc...it seems that all the time I keep getting requests for Limp Bizkit, Manson, etc. I refuse to play this stuff. Some of it I like, but hey, I've got a format. My point is this: I feel that I am accomplishing the idea inherent in the above post. Kids keep calling and asking for "their" bands, and I refuse to play them. The point is, they keep calling, in other words, they keep listening. Could it be I've reached a few of these troubled youth? Curious for more info on my show? That's easy for me, how many times have I listened to In Rock, wondering what it would be like to be in the studio with DP working with them on their pioneering effort. Which member would I be? Hah! I'd be Martin Birch (he did work on IR, didn't he?), steering the proceedings. Ok, I know that's unfair since he wasn't a member, but that's my response! Just wondering, has anyone heard of a top quality recording of the 8/6/98 DP show at the PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ, audio or video? If you have, I'm interested. I was there, but left during Perfect Strangers. Any info would be great. Thanks... I was just wondering if all solo albums by Steve Morse were as mellow and laid back as, "High Tension Wires" and "Structual Damage"? These are the only 2 cd's that i could find in Australia (the rest have been deleted from the list). I was actually looking for either. Coast to Coast, Southern Steel, or Stressfest. Are these albums heavier than the others??? By that i mean do they sound at all like Steve with DP????? I'd like to think they are because i want to order them from CD NOW.. Also, what about Glenn Hughe's solo albums, Play me Out and Addiction??? i had a short listen to Play me Out on the net and it sounds as funky as Stormbringer. Is it???? This isn't bad considering that Abandon hadn't even come out over here yet. ( I'm glad that i recieved my copy in March of 98 so that now i will be familar with the songs on the current tour). These are the only 2 DP songs that get any radio play in Australia. Whenever i ask a non DP fan if they have heard of the band, or if the band come up in talking, the person will always say, " Oh yeah, they did Smoke on the Water didn't they (add person playing the riff with his/her air guitar)!!" Now don't get me wrong, i like these two songs, but they just don't show the band's brilliance as much as say, Highway Star, SIFLS, Child in Time, Fireball, Fools, Lazy, Rat Bat Blue, Burn, Hold On, Comin Home, Gypsy's Kiss or Dead or Alive, to name a few!!!! Well, they have 3 records ("Gov't Mule", "Live at the Roseland Ballroom" and "Dose") and all of them are excellent, it's difficult to choose the best one. If you like that kind of heavy blues/rock, played by superb musicians, you will love any Gov't Mule CD. So, my suggestion for you is to follow the chronological order. Go for the first album,"Gov't Mule", and I'm sure you will want to buy the others. Cheers! From Dean Webb: dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com I'd have to say that of all the DP personnel, Ian Gillan was/is my favorite. He definitely has a certain charisma and stage presence that even comes across in recordings. I really enjoy his witty, clever lyrics. I also like the fact that he really doesn't seem to take what he does so seriously to the point of stupidity. He definitely has fun when he sings, and when he isn't having fun, he doesn't sing too much. With the band that isn't fun, I mean. Anyway, I was wondering on which song is he having the most fun of all? After a little scattershooting through my collection, I figured that "Mitzi Dupree", "Almost Human", "Hey Cisco", and "Nobody Home" all had to be rousers for him, but that "No One Came" had to be his funnest hour. That song is always a favorite of mine and not just because of the cool backward piano solo at the end. Gillan's lyrics and emoting make that song for me. Especially the Robin Hood stuff and the choruses... "No one came from miles around and said, 'man, who's he?'" In fact, most of the stuff from Fireball seems to be right up Gillan's alley. Small wonder he considers it his favorite of the Mk2 days. Anyway, I checked the little blurbs from each of the 8 main pages at my site and noticed that 2 of them came from "No One Came." I suppose I really *really* like that song a bunch. So, what was the finest/best/whateverest time your favorite DP fellow ever had? I'd like to know. Later, list! "Nobody knows who's real and who's faking Everyone's shouting out loud. It's only the glitter and shine that gets through Where's my Robin Hood outfit?" ___________________________________________ For subscription, unsubscription, and contributions, send mail to: dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com and I'll get around to it...
