Subject: NUGENT??

After hearing the talk about Ted Nugent, I knew I had to respond. While
Ted doesn't have the technical prowess or virtuosity of Ritchie (who
does??), he's one of the few American artists that really did it for me.

And stage presence? As much as I think of Big Ian, I'd say the Nuge has
more of it than anyone I've ever seen. He's just nuts!!

But there is no way he'd share a stage in 1975. (That he joined Damn
Yankees amazed me enough, but Ted was low on money at the time and was no
longer the #1 live draw in the World that he was from 1977-79 at that
time.) Ted considers himself the "alpha male" and as much as I'd love
the idea of Paice, Lord, Hughes and Nugent...... it could never happen.

Besides, there'd be no room on the stage for Paicey's drum kit and Lord's
Hammond where they'd be safe from Ted's Tarzanesque swinging in midair
and flaming arrows.

And as far as Ted not having to sing his own tunes, he wants to sing the
hits and let the other guys sing the songs that don't matter.

Sorry, Deep Purple and The Nuge just wouldn't mix. The closest they
could ever be together is in my tape collection. (And there, they are).

Actually, I don't mind that Tommy Bolin was the choice. He was certainly
talented when sober. And I agree with Bolinhead's suggestion of Bolin's
solo album "Teaser". That's a better judge of what Tommy sounded like.
I'd also suggest the James Gang's "Miami".

{Dean Webb: Indeed, after much reflection and soul-searching, it seems as
though Tommy Bolin was one of the best choices DP could have made, given
the circumstances of the day. Just about every other guitarist I could
think of not already in a monumentally successful group was a singer or had
even more *ideas* about the Way Things Should Be than Ritchie Blackmore.
Again, I ask you consider the possibility of Todd Rundgren playing with DP.
It would be a solo act before you could say "production values." Just my
opinion...}

Subject: Re: Deep Purple Digest #42 Ha! Madman in Purple?

I agree with you Dean- The Nuge is/was great and all, and Meatloaf's
singing on the "Free for All" album is awesome....but Ted in Deep
Purple? Only his stature at the time would be the right fit. Ok, me
being the big Glenn Hughes fan I am, I caught the *!:) {although
Glenn Hughes would have left *real soon*.} Terrible Ted was/is
supposedly "straight as an arrow".......but come on now, I bet the rest
of the guys in Purple were doin' it too! Glenn just didn't handle it as
well as the others! This of course was both Tommy's and Glenns' career
downfalls. I will always regret the fact that we were denied Glenn's
talents for so many years- and of course being totally denied of
Tommy's. There is allot of material that we may never hear from Glenn
(1990 Warner Bros.) which is now outdated, due to his inability to get a
grip or at least come to terms with his record company. I hope that all
of us Purple fans now know that Glenn has "got a grip" and he is
working harder than ever to prove it to us. His new album "The Way it
Is" is due to be released on SPV in April, and he plans to be touring
here in the states as well as abroad. I haven't noticed any mention in
the Digest of Glenn's Touring with the Tommy Bolin Band this
Feburary.....or did I miss it? It's called the "Texas Tornado Tour". He
will be hitting 4 Texas cities with Tommy's brother Johnny (drummer)
along with former Tommy Bolin Band members- the TB Tribute Band. Also
joining them in the band- is an excellent Shrapnell guitarist named
Craig Erickson, he played along with Mel Galley in the latter rendition
of Trapeze a few years back. I've got one of his solo albums, his
guitar playing is pretty hot! I am looking forward to attending all
four shows- what luck, I live in Texas! Anyone interested in going
should check out the Tommy Bolin Archives site at-
http://www.tbolin.com Another little plug- I think there is a release
of the above mentioned Trapeze tour coming out soon, and has anyone else
heard of a new compilation CD called "Friends and Relatives" with all
Deep Purple and related artists' tracks? It is supposed to be on a
German lable called Edel.

Mark

{Dean "What I Meant To Say Was..." Webb: When I said Glenn would have been
out *real soon*, I was actually referring to the fact that Mr. Nugent in
the band would definitely frustrate Glenn's aspirations as a vocalist and
would keep the band from straying further into funkified fields. Glenn
would be out due to creative differences before Ted figured out he or
anyone else in DP was a limey pothead or whatever. Oh well, I still want to
hear Coverdale have a go at the Ted Nugent catalog one of these days...}

Hi all!

In Germany's biggest Metal Mag I founf an advertisment for a new 'Purple'
Cd
which was released this week. It's a 2CD called Deep Purple "The Friends
and
relatives album". It features 26 songs by DP, Ian Gillan, ELF, David
Coverdale, Nick Simper, Trapeze, Rainbow, Micky Moody & Bernie Marsden,
Glenn
Hughes, Roger Glover, Tommy Bolin and War Horse.
Seems to me that this album has a similar concept as the 'Family Albums'
which
were released some time ago.
This new one is out on: Eagle Records / Edel

Good point Dean, Glenn would have left real soon!. Remember ol' Ted worked
with Rod Argent
a few moons ago, I don't think he sang 'til he went solo. But I could be
wrong.

BTW, saw Ted up here in Nor. Cal. last summer at a lake resort, great show,

Maybe this has already been discussed, but has "Final Mk III Concerts"
been edited? I mean, not the audience noises, but the songs? At least
Ritchie's solo spot on "You Fool No One" seems to have been taken
away...

Brian's comments:
There is a whole drum solo missing from You Fool No One (second version),
even though the song is introduced as featuring Ian Paice!!!

There is enough space, so I wonder why?

BTW the version of Space Truckin on this CD is one of my favourites -
sythesizer solo, bass solo, snippets from old R&B numbers, incredible
guitar work, organ improvisations, you name it, this track has got it!

Daniel asked if the MkIII Final Concerts were edited. Yes, the master
tapes of both shows used for the set have You Fool No One edited. The
first version, on CD1, has Ritchie's solo heavily edited, and the second
version, on CD2, has Ian Paice's drum solo edited out completely. In
fact, they edited the drum solo, but left Coverdale's introduction to
the song intact. He mention's the drum solo specifically, then it's not
there! Simon Robinson explained the whole thing in one of the issues
of Darker Than Blue. Apparently no one noticed the guitar solo edit at
the time they were remastering the tapes for the CD. They did notice the
missing drum solo, but someone forgot to edit Coverdale's introduction.
Simon said the thing was all done and shipped before anyone realized
what had happened. Cheers, Jim C.

Jimmy Hendrix joining DP in 1975 if still alive? Jimmy would probably
just like Rory Gallagher like to control his band, maybe not, I don't
know. It would have been a wonderful DP lineup, that's for sure! Maybe
with Jimmy Hendrix still alive in 1975 that would have prevented the
Disco period to arise. The Disco period killed almost all the great
end 60's / beginning 70's bands in my opinion, also DP (Or am I wrong?).
I would wonder how people like Jimmy Hendrix and Janis Joplin if still
alive would have coped with the end '70's Disco period? (and Led Zep
if JB was still around?)

COZY POWELL LIVE TRIBUTE

This is the latest information on the upcoming Cozy Powell live tribute
(courtesy of the Feb '99 Burrn). Ayers is putting out "Cozy Powell Forever
Tour Live in Tokyo" (AYCA-1006), from Super Rock * Summit. This was set for
release on January 21, and is the companion to the previously released
"Cozy
Powell Forever" disc put out last year. Both were masterminded by Munetaka
Higuchi (Loudness), and feature many of the same players (including Akira
Takasaki). Here is the track listing:

1. Kill the King
2. War Pigs
3. Mistreated
4. Still I'm Sad
5. Higuchi's Drums Solo '1998
6. Burn
7. Long Live Rock 'n Roll
8. Stargazer
9. A Light In The Black
10. All Night Long

HARD ROXX: NICKO McBRAIN, JOE LYNN TURNER

There's an interview with Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden, Trust, Pat Travers)
in
the the Dec 1998 issue of Hard RoxX magazine (#38), and this is what he had
to say about Cozy Powell:

"I knew Cozy pretty well. We were like roadmates as we didn't keep in touch
when we weren't working. When we'd run into each other on the road we would
have a bit of a laugh and a drink. I was very very sad when I heard about
the accident. We have lost another great and I suppose there are not many
of
us heavy players now."

Joe Lynn Turner was also interviewed, and had this to say regarding Cozy:

"I would just like to say for Cozy that we lost a prince there, we really
did. Cozy Powell was a nice guy. As well as one of the greatest drummers
that ever lived, he was an actual human being as well, and there are not
many human beings in rock 'n' roll... why is it always the good guy who
dies?"

Joe also had some interesting comments regarding Bruce Payne and the '84 DP
reunion.

"What bothers me is the way the manager, Bruce Payne, manipulated Rainbow's
breakup, because he told Ritchie one thing and me another. He separated us
to divide and conquer... Bruce told me that Ritchie wanted to this Deep
Purple thing, and I was very energetic and enthusiastic about helping Deep
Purple, one of the greatest bands in the world in my opinion, to get back
together, and that I would have had something to do with it... I felt like
I'm helping Deep Purple together by stepping back and doing a Joe Lynn
Turner solo deal. Meanwhile he turns around and tells Ritchie 'Joe doesn't
want to do another Rainbow album, and he thinks he is a big shot now, and
he's got this big money deal with Elektra Records, and that's that.' I
heard
Ritchie was very disappointed by this, and this is something we never
talked
about.

"I never knew this until this March of 1998, while I was out in LA visitng
a
friend of Ritchie's who is also a very good friend of mine, who told me how
Ritchie had felt. The story started to come together in my mind after years
of thinking about it, and it made sense, what Bruce Payne did to divide us,
he told me lies, he told Ritchie lies."

GLENN HUGHES / GEOFF DOWNS

The new Glenn Hughes / Geoff Downs CD, "The Work Tapes" (BP285CD) was
released in Europe late 1998 by Blueprint Records. Hard Roxx has this to
say
about the CD:

"This rediscovered collection of eight track recordings is the result of a
week's (writing and recording) betwween these two legends in 1991. It
caught
Hughes at a crossroads, toying with a career as a mainstream artist." The
second reviewer said that "at that time [Hughes] was goying with a Michael
Bolton style, and these songs are clearly in that vein, but with amore
Stevei Wonder / Marvin Gaye style. Be warned, these are demos in their
rawest form, with just Downes' keyboards and programmed drums, plus Hughes'
vocals, but that does not detract from the overall quality of the songs or
performances." [Downs was a member of the supergroup Asia]

The CD got a 75/100 review in Burrn! Here's the track list (courtesy of the
latter):

1. Bed of Roses
2. Don't Walk Away
3. Love For Sale
4. Push
5. Funk Music
6. Double Life
7. How Was I To Know
8. Walking On A Thin Line
9. Dance With Me
10. Feel The Magic

HAMMERFALL AND NUCLEAR BLAST

Swedish metal legend Janne Stark interviews Hammerfall ("German metal by
way
of Sweden") in the same issue. They are doing work on three upcoming
tribute
records - "Man on the Silver Mountain", for the upcoming Century/Media Dio
tribute, "Head over Heels" for an Accept tribute, and "I Want Out", for a
Helloweeen tribute (off Nuclear Blast). The last will be done in Kai
Hansen's studio, with Kai guesting. Newsflash: Hammerfall will now have to
play second-fiddle to ManOWar, now that the masters of "true metal" have
been signed to Nuclear Blast. With ManOWar and their growing retrometal
line, Nuclear Blast is gunning to be Europe's next big metal label. And to
think this was the house that Scandinavian black metal built...

PURPLE CHRONICLE: THE BEST SELECTION OF 25th ANNIVERSARY

I finally picked a used copy of this 1993 Japanese-only compilation 3-CD
Box
set for the amazingly low price of $40 Cdn at the local record store. This
is kind of annoying oddity in the DP catalog. Collector's have been
forwarwarned about Disc 3, whose idea of "rarities", for the most part, was
single edits culled from the original Japanese (and US) single releases,
and
tracks like Demon's Eye and the full edit of Speed King (rare only to Japan
and USA). Still, given the low price I paid, it's a welcome addition to my
DP collection.

Kazuo Hirose and Koh Sakai of Burrn!, and Japanese media magnate and HR/HM
fan Masa-Itoh all contributed to a nice color 90-page booklet - including
song-by-song liner notes, band chronology (all in Japanese), lyrics
(Japanese and English), some pictures and a complete discography of
Warner's
offerings as of 1994. Whoopee. Incidently, there's a minor error at the DP
website, which lists "You Keep on Moving" as the first track on disc 3 when
it in fact is the last track on disc 2.

[ The same record shop also carries the vinyl version of "30: The Best Of"
for $51 Cdn. Cool! ]

POLYDOR AND WARNER PIONEER IN FEB '98 BURRN!

Warner's advertisement is still touting the remastered and anniversary
reissues (IR, MH, FB, MIJ), along with "Anthology", "Single A's & B's" and
the 3-Cd "Live in Japan '72". They also indicate the release date of "Deep
Purple 30: Very Best Of" (WPCR-10045-6) was set for January 25, 1999.

The Polydor KK "original cardboard jacket series" (digital remaster
edition)
finally hit the stores on December 23. Given the purple-tinged nature of
the
Japanese market, it's not surprising which artists were given this "special

It also contains an ureleased track that I can't remember the name.
Overall,
a very very good addition to any serious Rainbow collector.

I'm asking US$55, including safe shipping. Please, if you're interested,

Subject: The Iron Maiden / Deep Purple crossover file

For those who said there was little to tie Iron Maiden to the mighty
Purple,
many many digests back, all I can say is how wrong they are. Long before
the
Deep Purple extended family tree was tattooed into my brain, my main focus
was the Maiden family tree and all things Maiden. So it's always great fun
to try highlight as many connections that can come to my mind.

Paul Dianno - Original singer. Appeared on Gogmagog project with
Maiden-alumni Janick Gers, Clive Burr along with Pete Willis (Def Leppard),
and Neil Murray (Whitesnake, Black Sabbath). Gogmagog's amazing three-track
mini-LP "I Will Be There" appeared in 1985. Also appeared on various True
Brits compilations (with Dennis Stratton, Paul Samson et. al.), and Praying
Mantis in 1990 (with Dennis Stratton and Clive Burr). Most direct DP
connection via Gogmagog (Gers)/Gillan, and Gogmagog (Neil
Murray)/Whitesnake. Secondary via Gogmagog (Clive Burr)/Samson/Gillan.
Let's
here it for Maiden's 20th with Paul Dianno!

Bruce Dickinson - Original singer for Samson, replacing Paul Dianno on
third
classic LP "Number of the Beast" (tenure 1982-1995, and 1999 so we pray).
Now, Paul Samson played with John McCoy (Gillan) on both his
solo LP and the Mammoth self-titled LP (1989). Bruce also sang on Rock Aid
Armenia's "Smoke on the Water '90". Therefore DP connection via
Samson/Gillan, and Rock Aid Armenia.

Dennis Stratton - Original guitarist on first LP, later to join Lionheart.
Joined revitalized Praying Mantis with fellow Maiden alumni Clive Burr and
Paul Dianno in 1990. Stratton remains in Praying Mantis to this day. Also
appeared on various True Brits compilations in the early 1990's, with Paul
Dianno and others. DP connection via Clive Burr (Praying
Mantis/Maiden)/Samson/Gillan and Paul Dianno (Praying
Mantis/Maiden)/Gogmagog/Gillan.

Adrian Smith - Member of NWOBHM act Urchin, Maiden member commencing with
second classic LP "Killers" (tenure 1981-1990). With Dave Murray, appeared
on Stars (1985), all-star heavy metal famine aid tribute organized by Dio's
Jimmy Bain and Vivian Campbell, which also featured the voice of Ronnie
Dio.
Also fronted solo act A.S.A.P, and two Psycho Motel LP's, before joining
Bruce Dickinson's band in 1997. DP connection via Dickinson &
Burr/Samson/Gillan and Nicko McBrain/Pat Travers/Hughes-Thrall, also
Stars/Rainbow, and Dickinson/Rock Aid Armenia.

Dave Murray - Founding member. Appeared on Stars along with Adrian Smith in
1985. DP connection (outside of Maiden) via Stars/Rainbow.

Janick Gers - Guitarist in Gillan-managed White Spirit (1975-81), then
later
Gillan. White Spirit also was a Samson supporting act. Appeared in Gogmagog
project with Dianno and Burr. Was in Bruce Dickinson's first solo LP
"Tattooed Millionaire". DP connection as member of Gillan band, and playing
alongside Neil Murray (Whitesnake) in Gogmagog.

Ron Matthews aka Ron Rebel - Distinction of being Maiden's first drummer
(1975-76). Ron Rebel played on McCoy's "Think Hard Again" (1984), which
featured John McCoy and Bernie Torme of Gillan fame. DP connection via
McCoy/Gillan.

Thunderstick - Second Maiden drummer (1977). Eventually wound up swapping
places with Samson drummer Clive Burr in 1977/78. DP connection via
Samson/Gillan.

Clive Burr - Maiden's drummer on their first recorded classic LP "Iron
Maiden" (1980), swapping drumstools with Thunderstick of Samson. Also in
Gogmagog project with Paul Dianno and Janick Gers, and the revitalized
Praying Mantis (1990-1996) (with Dennis Stratton). Most obvious DP
connection via Samson/Gillan.

Nicko McBrain - Drummer for French metal legends Trust, before taking over
Maiden's drumkit in 1982. Also appeared on a Pat Travers LP (possibly "Heat
in the Street", from 1978). Pat Travers, as you know, played with Pat
Thrall, later of Hughes/Thrall.

Steve Harris and (soon to be departing vocalist) Blaze Bayley - Aside from
working with the above members in Iron Maiden, no obvious DP connection. Oh
well...

Up the Irons, Thaaaaaaank You!
