>From the editor, Dean Webb: dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com

Well, there's lots of holidays and holy days (from which the word holiday
is derived) going on! We got winter vacation for schools in the US,
Christmas for the Christians, the holy month of Ramadan for Moslems,
Hanukkah for the Jews, and Diwali for the Hindus may have come and gone,
but I gotta include them as well in this holiday tapestry I'm weaving,
Kwanzaa and Epiphany are around the corner, we can't forget the Winter
Solstice for all you neo-pagans out there, Mithra's birthday for any
Zoroastrians who practice the rites of the cult of Mithra, and if I forgot
anyone's holiday or religious observance, I've got some more reading to
do...

Anyway, have a good time. If you're religious, take this time to reflect on
things. If you're not religious, well, reflect on things anyway. Hope your
year's been good and the next one's better! From everyone on the list to
everyone else on the list, the happiest of winter seasonal holidays
(including those based on lunar calendars that do not necessarily occur in
late December, but happen to fall on this time of year this time around
(which was a really good song from CTTB))! Now on to the digest...

This got posted to the Black Sabbath list:
... in todays newspaper (expressen)  it was a half page about
>a forthcoming rainbow reunion.... I don't know the details, and if its
>true but if it is, they are gonna tour next year and the band will consist
>of ......Ronnie James Dio, Ritchie Blackmore and listen to this Tony
>Iommi. Probably some more too.. It sounds a bit strange that Iommi would
>leave Black Sabbath now...
**********

I was about to file this under "yeah, right" when I got to thinking...
Iommi and Blackmore would be perfect in Rainbow, along with Dio and Candice
Night. They would love to all play together. I bet Tony Carey and Jimmy
Bain would jump at the chance to get in this act, along with a drum machine
and a horn section. Talk about good vibes... we *know* there would be
absolutely no jealousy between Mr. Blackmore and Mr. Iommi. Ritchie has
*such* a reputation for being a sweet guy to work with.
For those who are thinking, "not a chance!" let me point out that, at this
very moment, a monkey flew out of my butt. Surely a sign of things to come.
Oops! There goes another one!  Reunion for sure!

Hi Purplephiles
Nico asked
Did anyone see Page & Coverdale on tour back then? Gee, I wish I could have
seen it. They probably only did the UK. Don't tell me that they did a
concert in Holland and I missed it.........How many video clips of Page &
Coverdale from that period are there? What would you think of a
Coverdale/Page II?
Nico Borger
Coverdale/Page only played in Japan. This occured in December 1993. If I
recall correctly they played nine dates starting in Tokyo 12/14/93 and
finishing this very short tour in Nagoya 12/22/93.
I have a couple of videos from this tour. Setlist is
Absolution Blues (C/P)
Slide It In (WS)
Rock And Roll (LZ)
Over Now (C/P)
Kashmir (LZ)
Take A Look At Yourself (C/P)
Take Me For A Little While (C/P)
In My Time Of Dying (LZ)
Here I Go Again (WS)
Don´t Leave Me This Way (C/P)
Shake My Tree (C/P)
Still Of The Night (WS)
Black Dog with snippet of The Ocean (LZ)
Feeling Hot (C/P)
This was basically the setlist throughout the tour. They did add Whole
Lotta Love (LZ) to the last show diring Shake My Tree
Songs that were rehearsed but did not show up in the shows are
For Your Life (LZ)
Nobody´s Fault But Mine (LZ)
Dazed And Confused (LZ)
Dancing Days (LZ)
Bron-y-Aur Stomp(LZ)
Communication Breakdown (LZ)
Stairway To Heaven (LZ)
Whisper and Prayer For The Dying(C/P)
Most of these were reheashed as instrumentals
Touring band was Denny Caramassi (Drums)
Durban LaVerde (Bass) and I think Brett Tuggle (keyboards)
I have a decent video from this tour, Osaka 12/20/93 which I would be
intersted in trading for some Badlands videos or some Purple, Rainbow,
Whitesnake videos.
Cheers
Eric

Daniel is absolutely right. But the song he mentioned was not the only one
of it's kind - Poco released an album (which name I don't remember right
now) back in '75 and there was a track called 'Makin' Love'. Kiss made a
song by that name in 1976 (Rock'n Roll Over-album) and Rainbow in 1979.
Story continues: Poco made a song called 'Writing On the Wall' in early
eighties and now Ritchie have done that too. But who was the first this
time? (Five years before Poco.) Think about it!

None. :-) Mr. List-Meister, you should perhaps check the basic facts about
DP history before writing at times. :-) The Ian Gillan/JCS story is fully
described in Ian's autobiography. Tim Rice wanted him to sing the role as
Jesus when they were making the project, Lloyd-Webber was reluctant to use
him, and had his back turned to Ian (well, he *was* playing the piano...
;-) during the audition. But Ian passed the test, naturally, and got the
part - as Jesus on the original studio version of JCS, which was released
before any stage production was put up. The LP was a huge success, and so
the stage show was realized, and later the movie. Traditional musical
people thought this was a very commercial way of doing it at the time, by
getting in rock stars to make the album a success before the stage show
happened.
Ian was offered the part in the stage show and the movie as well, but
declined due to the otherwise well-documented work strain Deep Purple had
at the time (the same work strain that helped tearing Mk2 apart). I seem to
recall there being a story about Ian turning up plastered for discussions
with the movie's director about the part, and being told he'll have to stay
in the desert of Israel for the best part of several months for a rather
smallish amount of money, Ian replies "Deep Purple make more money on one
night!", or words to that effect. (Uh, if anyone's read the book a bit more
recently than me, feel free to fill in.;-)
Tim Rice later wanted Ian to sing the role as General Peron in "Evita", but
Ian again declined, although this must have been either in the period Ian
was inactive as an artist (1973-75) or in the early Ian Gillan Band
(1975-78) days. (When was "Evita" originally released, anyone?)
There is, btw, a mention of this incident in the new letter from Ian to his
fans at http://www.gillan.com/; the site is highly recommended and great
fun. Ian is a writing man, and writes stuff on a daily basis (not for the
webpage, I must hasten to add!;-), and some of it is results in the wryly
funny anecdotes on that page. A must-read for people who thinks Ian is
incapable of writing anything good. (Some people seem to only see the first
layer of Ian's lyrics at times, and dismiss him as simplistic because of
this.)
Cheers,

This must be the guitar tablature book for the songs on the compilation
titled "Purple Rainbows", which was a TV-advertised (in the UK, at least)
compilation put out by EMI and Polygram in cooperation, and featured all
lineups of DP (up till that point in time) and spin-off bands like Rainbow,
Whitesnake, Dio etc.
The book is now out of print, AFAIK. I remember seeing it in a guitar shop
some years back.
Hm, I actually checked my facts this time ;-), and it might not be out of
print, after all. You can get the book much cheaper at amazon.co.uk;

Subject: Whatever happened to Lordy's C3 and other Hammond stories..

Here's one for the Hammond watchers out there.
1) Lordy's old C3
Does anyone ( Svante? ) know whatever happened to The Great Man's old C3?
this is the one I think he bought from Christine McVie ( Fleetwood Mac )
around 1970 and used right up until his last tour with Whitesnake in 1983.
I know that when Purple reformed he started using the B3 owned by Blackmore
( Q: Why did RB own a Hammond? A: Presumably so that he could keep it too
low in the mix by remore-control so as not to be upstaged ) which the
banjo-player took with him on his hike. Since then he has used hired
Hammonds for the tours and studio work.
Why? Whatever happend to the beloved old C3 with that absolutely unique
sound ( Jon had built an RMI electric piano into the circuitry within the
Hammond )? Was it retired? Does he still own it? Is it for sale? We have to
know.

2) Hammond Wannabes
Fellow keyboard-players on the list will be aware of the recent spate of
Hammond-soundalikes on the market. While none of these keyboards truly does
the business, they now do a pretty good job and are about 50 times lighter.
I'd be interested to know  ( as a prospective purchaser trying to decide
which one of these to buy ) whether Lordy has ever expressed an opininon on
merits of say the XB2 ( Hammond-Suzuki, single keyboard ) the XB3 ( H-S
full-sized B3 repica ) the Roland VK7 ( very good ), Viscount D9 etc.
I've noticed he'd dabbled with the XB2 - it's on top of his Hammond on the
"Come Hell or Highwater" video, but he appears to be using it as his
midi-master keyboard and doesn't ever play it as an actual organ.
So Hammond-lovers out there, who knows the Great man's thoughts on this
subject?

In the days of anonymous cover versions, y'know those session musos

Anyway they did Smoke On The Water! They didn't try to copy it, but
actually rearranged it into something very different - more like pop than

I have it on tape somewhere, I must dig it out and give it another

Subject: Answers to DP quiz, digest #37

Well here goes, the answers to the questions for the DP quiz in digest #37
(well as best as I can!!!)
IN ROCK-
Q1. What was the original name intended for the opener for this album -
Speed King?
A1. "Kneel & Pray"
Q2. Name the song (or the group that recorded the song) that was the
inspiration for 'Child in Time'. The group from whom the tune was
borrowed, later returned the favour by borrowing a Purple tune called
'Wring that Neck' not long afterwards.
A2. Group - "It's A Beautiful Day", Song - "Bombay Calling".
Q3. The song was written after a session at a local pub where the band
got plastered. Here are a few quotes.
"I remember laughing at the stupidity of the lyrics""We borrowed the
title from the words of an old Arthur Alexander song.""We stole the
tempo from Canned Heat" (On the Road Again) Which song?
A3. "Black Night"
Q4. A local band called Spice used to rent space for rehearsal in the
same building that Purple used -The Hanwell community Center. They were
quick to borrow one or two ideas they heard coming thru the wall. They
later metamorphosed into their current popular identity.Name the band as
they're called now.
A4. "Uriah Heep"
FIREBALL
Q5. The opener in this album is the title track - 'FireBall'. What causes
the sound that is heard before the song itself starts?
A5. "The sound was the studio airconditioning being turned on (which Martin
Birch had recorded)."
Q6. What was the original name for the song 'Strange Kind of Woman'?
A6."Prostitute".
Q7. "I'm not a violent man by nature, but imagine lying in bed, reading,
at about three in the morning, when an axe head smashes through your
door, disappears, then smashes through again and again, making matchwood of
it. I leapt up, in my underwear, and went for him as he disappeared down
the corridor."A band member describing an incident at The Hermitage where
the band was recording FireBall Who's talking about whom?
A7. "Roger Glover is talking about Ritiche Blackmore smashing his door down
after refusing to give him a crucifix that Ritchie (and others) wanted to
use for a seance - Roger ended up chasing Ritiche with a leg off a broken
chair and was/or did belt into him with it!!"
Q8. In the song 'Fools', Ritchie's solo has a strange sound to it. How
did he do it?
A8. "volume control"
MACHINE HEAD
Q9.   Name the first single released from this album.
A9. A side - "Never before",  B side - "When A Blind Man Cries"
Q10. How many people can be seen on the cover of this album? You would know
the answer if you knew  how the cover was created.
A10. "There are 6, the 5 members of the band and the photographer (Shepherd
Sherbell). The cover was made by stamping the words into a sheet of
polished metal which was then propped as a mirror and photographed with the
band reflected into it (including the photographer)"
Q11. "It's been very kind to us that song, it's been worth five figures a
year each, closer to six" - Jon Lord talking about a song - which one?
A11. "Smoke on the Water"
Q12. 'Smoke on the Water" has a reference to Frank Zappa (among other
people). There's another song which mentions him again. Which one?
A12. "This question is WRONG - Frank Zappa's name is mentioned again, BUT
it is in the same song. In the "remixed" version of SOTW near the end, this
had been faded out on the original, Ian Gillan says "break a leg Frank"
13. Garth Rocket, Jeff Thunder - psuedonyms for which band member?
A13. "Ian Gillan"
14. What does Mitchell Parish have to do with Deep Purple?
A14. "stuffed if I know?????, who the $(at-a-domain-named)#^ is "Mitchell Parish"?? "
Well 13 answers out of 14 ain't bad for an old bloke (the big 40 soon!!!)

This question is hard to answer.
This CD contains songs on which Ritchie played as a session player, not as
a member of the bands which recorded the songs, so he had to play whatever
was asked of him.
So don't expect anything too typical "blackmorish" from this CD, although
sometimes you can tell that it is TMIB himself........
I'd say this is a collectors item, not a must have for the casual RB-Fan.
Btw: There are at least to different releases of this collection, one
called "TAKE IT! The sessions 1963/69" and one version which must be the
japanese version of this CD, at least I saw it in the "Japanese

second version, but the tracklist was identical.

Subject: Cover versions....and concert experiences

Hi all!
I can remember that German Group "Prollhead" (a punk band from Hamburg)
have
recorded a cover of "Smoke on the water" a couple of years ago. It seemed
to
me that they translated all the words into German directly which made the
song
sound a bit funny. I really like this version. Musically, it's more Hard
Rock
than Punk. I can remember that a German TV station played their video clip
for
this nearly daily...the guys dressed in 70's kind of style and the story is
a
copy of the stuff that happened to DP when they recorded the original
version
of this song.
Speaking of video clips: I can remember that I was once saw "Take me for a
little while" on a TV station at the time....
Speaking of DP/ Rainbow cover versions: I experienced two of them last
Sunday
at Axel Rudi Pell's fantastic show at the Zeche in Bochum, Germany.
The whole set was impressing and the crowd went mad (approx...1000-1200
people). New singer Johnny Gioeli (from New York, ex-Hardline) did a
fantastic
performance (he replaced Jeff Scott Soto last year)...Axel's performance
was
over the top...somewhere comparable to a mix between Blackmore, Malmsteen &
M.
Schenker...absoultely unbelievable fast playing melodic guitar playing. His
new drummer Mike Terrana (ex-Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine, Stuart
Smith --another
guy from the US) set one highlight after another (one of the most
unbelievable
drum solos I ever saw) and was the perfect partner for the bass player
Volker...a very groovy rhythm section. The most curios person on stage was
keyboard player Ferdy Doernberg (of Rough Silk) who played the whole set
with
one hand because he hurt his shoulder a couple of days
before...unbelievable...
The great show lasted 120 minutes...and at the end of the normal set Axel
and
band performed a breath taking version of Rainbow's "Still I'm sad". Very
heavy performance of this one ..full of jams and absoultely over the top.
The
band has recorded this track for the upcoming Dio Tribute album and I'm
sure,
the version on CD will be as great as this one.... after the break they did
two encores. One of them was a superb Medley!!! of Deep Purple's Burn and
Jimi
Hendrix' "Purple Haze" and the crowd went really mad. Gioeli absolutely had
no
problems with all singing Dio, Coverdale and Soto stuff and his own of
course...he was unbelievable...I read somewhere that he performend on
Broadway
when he was a child..so you can imagine what his stage performance looked
like...The other encore was an old Steeler song (the German Band Axel
played
in before he went solo), a kinf of jam session as well with a middle part
which included a vocal/guitar performance similar to the stuff Blackmore
and
Gillan were up to. One of those songs that are 3 minutes long on the album
and
grow to over 10 minutes on stage.
A fantastic evening: a great setlist, brilliant sound, a tight band on
stage
that joked around all the time and had fun obviously and a fantastic
crowd....I think this is what's it all about our beloved music...after the
show they started to play a Rainbow tape (Man on the Silver Mountain) and
the
crowd was so hooked that they started to sing along the tape while leaving
the
hall....couldn't believe it...
After the show, a friend of mine and myself walked into the pub which comes
next to  the concert hall. All the bands were in there (two Progressive
Metal
bands supported: Athena from Italy and Dreamscape from Munich, Germany) and
after an hour Axel and the boys came into the room as well. Axel signed
anything he could get and was photographed all the time. I had the chance
to
talk to him shortly and all I have to say..he's great. He was wearing a
pilgrims hat like the one Ritchie Blackmore used to wear by the way :-)
I received a mail by the webmaster of Rough Silk's Homepage earlier today.
He
was at the same show as me (we missed each other) and he told me the same
that
a guy of my mailing list already posted there: the show in Hamburg, Germany
last Saturday should have been even greater becuase the ycrowd was even
wilder...only hard to imagine...
So, I had the ultimate concert experience last weekend. And I have to say,
any
Rainbow/Deep Purple fan would be pleased to see a show by this band (there
were a lot in the hall, regarding the t-shirts I saw). They band is  not
exactly doing the same stuff as Rainbow but you can hear all the influences
in
Axel's music on all 9 of his solo albums. And they are the most popular
German
Hard Rock band in Germany at the moment. They sell the most records and
play
the largest crowds. (as long as the Scorpions don't release a new record or
tour..:-)
Next year, they will be on tour again with a new record that is already
finished...and I will be there that's for sure. Maybe some of you will have
the chance to see them live at Europe's largest Metal Festival in Wacken
(near
Hamburg)...there are some rumors that the band will perform there...

Hey DP lovers, saw Dokken recently-good show. During their encore they
did about 2/3rds of Highway Star-a pretty good version at that. As these
guys aren't youngsters it's good to see Purples influnece on all
generations. Regards John

yes, fenholt did sing jc superstar(i've heard it and frankly i think
he's kind of whiny, and doesn't do a very good job) and me and my mother
both agree that when he left JCSS he forgot to break character.
by the way when my mother checked out his site, it was such an ego trip
that my mother thought it was more like a tribute to a dead guy, he also
claims to have sung for deep purple(maybe the rod evans '80 fiasco) and
rainbow.

{Dean "Speaking of Black Sabbath..." Webb: I just noticed that "Supertsar"
is an anagram of "Superstar." Cool. Do you think they planned it that way?}

Possibly means the CD Purple Rainbows which features said acts. Not
essential,no rare material and commonly available cheap in the U.K.

Hi
A few issues ago I mentioned Jesus Christ Superstar as being from 1972.
This is incorrect (oh, the shame). It was actually released in November
1970 and topped the US charts almost immediately. In took until 1972 for it
to eventually reach no. 6 on the UK charts.
Sorry...
Cheers

Thinking about Paul's suggestion about having ALL ex DP guys on stage at
one given time , can you imagine what that would do ? It would probably end
up in a mass brawl ! What songs do you think they would play ? Correction :
what SONG do you think they would play ?!  How about Might just take your
life ? !!

Subject: Rainbow Reunion Official?

Hi!
A few days ago, the Swedish newspaper Expressen stated that it's now
official that Ritchie and Ronnie will make a Rainbow reunion tour in
1999. Including "several gigs" in Sweden. They didn't know, though, what
players would handle the other instruments.
Is this really true? Is this more than just a rumour?

Subject: Blackmore's Night - just how DO you classify it???

Hi Dean,
In response to your query about what BN actually sounds like I'd personally
describe it as "medieval/renaissance/folk/pop"!  We all know that old
Ricardo has loved medieval music for years and the vibe I get from this
album is that he's finally had the courage to take the bull by the horns
and devote a whole album to it, aided and abetted by his girlfriend.
It's an album I stick on to create an atmosphere rather than to seriously
rock out to, which in fact would be absolutely impossible no matter how
loud you turned it up!  I think it has some great acoustic moments with
some beautiful lyrical playing, the occasional stinker thrown in for good
measure too.  Candice's voice is very much Stevie Nicks but with maybe a
purer quality that suits the innocence of the music.  One thing for sure is
that it's a very brave thing for Ritchie to do, totally out of character
with his 'rock n roll wildman' image (although those of us who have
followed him for years have always known that's just one side of him.)
One thing that always makes me smirk every time I listen to the album is
something Ritchie said during an interview, (which I believe is on his Rock
Profile vol. 1) in response to the question, "Do you consider yourself a
heavy metal guitarist?"... "Oh yes definitely," he replied "it doesn't
bother me, as long as no-one calls me a folk guitarist!"  Oh well, it's
amazing what time and the love of a good woman will do for you eh?
All the best,
Simon C.
