The best albums (IMO) which he sings on are MSG-Assault attack, RAINBOW-Down to earth, ALCATRAZZ-Disturbing the peace and IMPELLITERRI-Stand in line. The last album he did, from what I know, was with the band BLACKTHORNE in 1993. The album is called Afterlife and it's pretty good heavy metal/hard rock. The guitar player is Bob (or Bruce?) Kulick, not the one who played in Kiss but his brother I think. After Bonnet quit (or was kicked out, I don't know), the Blackthorne guys got David Glenn Eisley on vox and changed the name of the band to MURDERER'S ROW. They only released one album, which was good. Does someone know if Mr. Bonnet will make a return in the hard rock/metal industry soon? His voice is missed here... Guillaume Quebec City, Canada P.S. The band KENZINER has an album out named Timescape, which is pretty good neoclassical metal with a great guitarist. The interesting point is that the singer has a very similar voice to Graham Bonnet... ___________________________________________ -----Original Message----- From: BSchwanke(at-a-domain-named)aol.com To: dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com Date: Thursday, November 26, 1998 12:25 PM Subject: Butterflies, Wizards, Links, Books, Blackmore Fanclub, Charts & Mailing Lists Hi all! I have a CD which includes Butterfly Ball and Wizard Convention both: Connoisseur Collection, VSOP CD 139 Four numbers of Wizard's Convention are missing because of lack of disc space. Links: that Whitesnake unplugged review Kevin mentioned is on my page. It hasn't been written by myself. A friend of mine from Singapore wrote it.. I ordered a new book with the Topic of Deep Purple earlier today. It's name is "A life in Purple" and it's written by a German fan called Ingo Jansen. I'll let you know more about it when I have it. I sent the author an email yesterday and he seems to be a very kind of person...some reviews about those book in German Metal Mags say that it's very good and includes: 400 pages of anecdotes, album & concert reviews, a complete tree of all bandmembers, lyrics for all of DP's songs (can't be true!?!). The book is written in German and the first edition is limited on 500 copies. Contact JansenIngo(at-a-domain-named)aol.com for more infos.... Rainer, the guy from Ritchie's German Online Fanclub offers now a new fanletter...It's written in German and it contains 100!!! pages of Ritchie news, interviews and real photos...Rainer was on tour with Blackmore's Night and has 150 photos from the tour on his page. The price for this is DM 20,- (in Germany incl. package). Mark Welch from the English Blackmore Fan Club "More Black than Purple" is going to fly over to Hamburg to do an interview with Axel Rudi Pell on Dec 12th. The interview will be published in Ritchie's Fanzine Vol.11. I'm going to see Axel live on Dec. 13th in Bochum..is anyone from this list going to see him play somewhere? I need some concert reviews for my page...I already have people who want to review shows from Hamburg and Bochum but what about Munich and Ludwigsburg for example???? :-) Charts: I received German Magazine Rock Hard a couple of days ago (No.139) and I found some German album chart entries inside..here are couple by the biggest bands from today :-): band highest position Kiss 3 Hammerfall 15 Aerosmith 21 Black Sabbath 40 Axel Rudi Pell 58 Judas Priest 63 Deep Purple 73 -> 30 Years Best of Bruce Dickinson 76 Stratovarius 89 I was wondering..did the new Purple Best of album chart anywhere else??? A couple of people joined in including my co-writer for my page, Alanna Davis. She's running an own interesting web site herself: It's called Rainbow Flame's Metal Domain....guess what's it's about. It also features stuff about Yngwie, Axel Rudi Pell, Virgin Steele and Stratovarius and possibly everthingy Joe Lynn Turner has ever done - he's her alltime fave :-) http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studio/2786 Oh my dear, this got long...to Dean: I know what you're doing in front of the computer the whole day...editing stuff, updating homepages, answering mails and writing...moderating mailing lists :-) Take care, Birgitt {Dean Webb: actually, it's not an all-day thing. I came across a highly recommended CD at Best Buy the other day- Uriah Heep "Classic Heep an Anthology". I think it has been out a little while, I remember reading about it's release on one of Heep's Web sites, but considered it a good find at Best Buy. It's a very comprehensive collection, and includes a lengthy essay from St. Louis's/Ampeg's very own Ken Hensley (member 70 to 1980). Ken was certainly not the Hammond B-3 player that Jon Lord is, but it certainly contributed to Heep's similar style to DP's back in the early 70's. Lot's of similarities ...Deep Purple has "Child in Time" Heep has "July Morning" etc., etc. The song- "The Wizard" will go down as one of the best songs of the 70's, in my book- no doubt. Classic stuff! Speaking of "Wizards"- Those that were inquiring (Eric) about Glover's Butterfly Ball, and the Wizard's Convention, There was a re-release two years ago on CD- I believe. In fact, there was a third CD, that was kind of a best of, or included alternate/ bonus tracks- I can't remember for sure, they were available through Jart, the best source on-line/mail order, I've found for anything Purple. Also there was an in-depth description of these CD's on Eddie Hardin's web site, I think he was involved with the re-release production. Although, far from the rock format- Dio's , Coverdales, and especially Glenn's Trapezish "Get Ready" contributions are killer on the Butterfly Ball album- it's just a bummer that all the cool songs are just so dang short! I think Jon Lord has already been mentoring dozens of professional keyboard players in one way or the other for the last three decades. Gregg Giuffria, David Bryan, Alan Fitzgerald, to name just a few, were all strongly influenced by Jon Lord’s playing technique. >From my point of view, I don’t see a new generation of keyboard players that truly follow the trends of Jon Lord. Sure, many talented and classically trained keyboardists make use of some “Lordy” licks while playing their state of the art digital workstation keyboards. But most of them don’t seem to be getting it right. Jon Lord isn’t great because of the way he plays the piano or the synthesizers (don’t get me wrong, I’m Jon Lord’s #1 fan, but this is the way I see it). Jon Lord is great because of the masterful way he introduced the Hammond organ into rock music. And he has sticked to this instrument up to present day. Jon started playing the Hammond organ prior to joining Deep Purple. His keyboard rig has featured many keyboard brands and models (Minimoog and Polymoog analog synths , ARP Odyssey analog synths, Rhodes and Yamaha electric pianos, Yamaha DX7 and Korg M1 digital synths, just to name just some that come to my mind). But one instrument that has never left and will never leave his keyboard rig is his Hammond organ, which will be firing up a couple of Leslie cabinets. This is the difference. This is what most young rock keyboard players aren’t getting. You can’t follow Jon Lord’s path without having been previously charmed by the Hammond organ. Playing a Hammond organ isn’t just about reproducing your previously well learned licks on your favourite keyboard synth. Why is it that Jon Lord hasn’t replaced his trusty Hammond organ for a newer, smaller and lighter organ clone? Not just because there’s no other instrument that can excactly reproduce the Hammond organ sound (although some come pretty close), but because there’s no other instrument that you can actually play like a Hammond. Sorry Svante, but I don’t agree that Jens Johansson is the one to take over after Jon Lord. I have an enormous respect for Jens as a keyboardist. He’s extremely talented. He’s got an incredible technique, and he is also classically trained. He sure made a terrific job behind the synthesizer keys in Malmsteen’s Rising Force and Dio, but he’s not a Hammond organ player. Have you listened to Deep Purple’s tribute album? Jens plays Hammond organ on all tracks, and to be honest, it is not his instrument. He felt like a fish out of water. Not to mention his Hammond organ playing in bassist Jonas Hellborg’s album “e”. It made me think that he doesn’t even like Hammond organs. I don’t want to appear badmouthing Jens, but I think comparing him to Jon Lord is like trying to add apples and oranges. I had the incredible opportunity of attending the first of four Deep Purple gigs at the House of Blues in L.A. last winter. Of course I was in the front row, and I witnessed Jon Lord in all his splendor. He palyed a rental Hammond B-3 organ, on top of which he had a Korg M1 synth, and to his left side, a digital piano and another synth on top of it (probably a Yamaha DX7). Guess what? Jon played his Hammond organ almost 99 % of the time exclusively. I think I’ve already extended myself way too long. On the topic of who are the players currently following Jon Lord’s path... well, throw your candidates to the table (or the list), and we can discuss on them. What a passionate subject!!! These albums have been released on cd - not once but twice, AFAIK. Connoisseur released both titles on one cd back in 1989, the whole Butterfly Ball is there but only six tracks from Wizard's. Then in 1994 German (?) record company Repertoire released Wizard's Convention cd with some extra tracks and in 1995 Butterfly Ball, again with some bonus things, different mixes for the most part. Wizard's Convention contains David Coverdale, Roger Glover and Jon Lord on one track and Glenn Hughes singing two songs. Ronnie James also sings on two bonus pieces. On Butterfly Ball Hughes and Coverdale sings lead on one track and Ronnie James on three tracks. All in all, these cd's are definately worth of buying, great musicians and some really, really great tunes. Try CeeDeeMail, they are selling these items, I think. -Marko- ___________________________________________ Well, where did you hear the rumour? Steve Morse is still the guitar player in Deep Purple. What I wanted to know is, does anybody know if the band, or management have any plans to "remaster" and "re-release" the MkIII, Mk IV, etc, recordings. The reason I ask is that the 25th aniversary remasters have certainly been of a much higher quality than when everyone in the music industry rushed to put their back catalogues onto CD when CD's first came out. The result was (in my opinion) that many records that sounded great on vinyl turned to crap when put onto CD. It's almost been a journey of rediscovery for me each time I've go my "new" 25th reissue that allows you to hear the "real" sound of everyone in the band. I'd also be interested to know that if they do, will Roger Glover be involved in the remastering. I know he didn't play on them, but he certainly got the sound right on the remasters to date.
