>From the editor: dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com

Phoo! just cleaned up the ol' address book. Several subscribers' email
addresses went south for the winter (north for the summer for you
antipodeans out there) and goobered up my inbox with bounce messages. Well,
those that got three bad bounces are not unsubscribed. I'm going to modify
the rules of the list accordingly:

If I get 3 (or more) "user unknown" or "user does not exist" or other
fatal-sounding email replies on a particular address, it's off the list.
"Mailbox full" or "timeout connecting to server" messages are normal and to
be expected. They trigger no action. Sorry, but I got an Inbox to keep
clean, here.

OK, now to the matter of other lists: there's three more that I know of and
they're located at the onelist.com website. Query on Deep Purple and you'll
get three hits. If you like daily, unmoderated feeds, there's two lists just
getting started for that. If you speak Turkish, or are willing to lurk and
try to learn on your own, there's a DP list in Turkish there, as well.
Cross-posting is fine with me. I'll keep this one going the way I got it,
though, because it's the one I wanted to have in the first place.

And now, the digest. (BTW, I re-read the list rules and it says 10 or so
messages for a digest... I was remiss in keeping my own rule, but no more!
(For now) (From "Trashed": "... I thank you Mr. Miracle, I won't get trashed
again... oooh-oo-oo-ooo-oooh... can you hear my lies?...")) :-)

...In reply to your question, whether Rainbow or Whitesnake played any other
Purple songs besides "Mistreated". Well, Whitesnake used to play both "Might
just take your life" and "Soldier of Fortune" live.
Rainbow also played " Smoke" sometimes as an encore in the JLT
line-up....( it must be said ,as well, he was truly awful at singing it
!!!!)

Subject: Deep Purple to write "Rock 'n'Roll All Nite" - Shocker !

In light of the latest release by Deep Purple "Abandon" British bookmakers
have decided to slash the odds on Deep Purple writing a song called
"Rock'n'Roll all nite" before the end of their career from 2/1 to 8/11.

Looking back in history it all bodes terribly badly for Purple

1. In 1974 Kiss recorded a song called "Comin' Home"
In 1975 DP recorded a song called "Comin' Home"

2. In 1974 Kiss also recorded a song called "Strange Ways"
In 1987 Deep Purple finally wrote a song called "Strange Ways"

3. In 1983 Kiss recorded a song called "Lick it Up"
In 1993 Deep Purple decided it was time to write "Lick it Up"

4. In 1984 Kiss recorded a song called "Under the Gun"
Not to be out done later in 1984 Purple also recorded a song called
"Under the Gun"

5. In 1987 Kiss recorded a song called "Come Hell or High Water"
In 1994 too lazy to write the thing Purple named their live album "Come
Hell or High Water"

6. In 1977 Kiss recorded a song called Almost Human
In 1998 Purple could hold it in no longer and went and recorded Almost
Human

A spokesman for William Hills said he was not surprised by the latest
instance of KISS copying on the new
Purple release and said it was probably just a matter of time before
"Rock'n'Roll all Nite" and "Detroit Rock City"
end up on a Purple record: "They are probably rummaging through the Kiss
back catelogue as we speak searching for inspirational song titles".

Reports that the next live Purple album is going to be called "Purple Alive
23" have been dismissed by the band's management.

{Dean "Ed" Webb: Say it ain't so! It must be Jon Lord or Ian Paice that's
the Kiss fan, because they're the only constants in the lineups. How much
longer before they perform in makeup and those cool costumes? Hey, that
might be cool! Ian's already got the Gene Simmons award for "Best Really
Long Hair Just Screaming to be Done Up All Goofy-Looking in a Kiss Costume,"
and I'll bet Glover and Morse would be more than happy to accomodate...
either Lord or Paice is the Kiss fan... if DP got a new drummer or
keyboardist and started wearing costumes and stuff, I think nobody here
would be surprised. Thanks for the tip, dude!}

I am very glad that Jon Lord is still writing and playing great music. I
am, however, wondering if he is mentoring a younger player in his style?
Jon has a unique style and I would love to hear the style continue for 40
or more years.

Do we know if he is grooming a student? Is Mickey Lee Soule officially
learning from him? I would appreciate it if someone could share if they
know the answer.

Thanks so much

Hi Dean & everybody else!

I thought you would like to see some reviews made by people who don't wear
"purple glasses". English "Q Magazine" has over 17000 reviews on their page
(www.qonline.co.uk). They give albums numbers 1-5, and here's what Purple
albums got:
Knocking at your Back Door 1, Fireball 2, Book of Taliesyn 2, Slaves and
Masters 2, Live At The Olympia 2, Purpendicular 3, Nobody's Perfect 3, Deep
Purple 3, Shades of DP 3, Knebworth 3, Anthology 3, In Concert 1970-72 3,
Singles As & Bs 3, The Battle Rages On 3, Gemini Suite 3, House of the Blue
Light 4, and Made in Japan 4,
I've also seen "Abandon" and ”Purplexed” getting only 1... Well, maybe
that's how people who are not that keen on Purple see these albums. (Will
you add these scores to your album list, Dean?)

Now I'd like to apologise everybody waiting for some mail from me. I HAVEN'T
FORGOTTEN YOU! There has been something wrong with my e-mail, so I couldn't
send messages to "foreigners". Hopefully this gets where it should.

SOME DP COMPILATIONS REVIEWED (through the purple lenses)

You've had studio and live albums reviewed. After I bought "30: very best
of" I thought maybe now it's time to look at some compilations. The worst
first:

1. GREATEST PURPLE (1985, 2-lp) score 2. The German EMI made this one as
fast as they could after the reunion. Classics and oddities, but no rare
tracks nor anything from Mk IV. Every track can be found from normal albums.
I don't know how well the band history is written since it's in German!
Luckily you are not likely to find this one anywhere!

2. THE (GOLD) COLLECTION (1997) score 3. A part of the 100-year-old EMI's
Gold Collection. A strange compilation with even stranger band history (Ian
Coverdale is my favourite DP singer, too). There is a story about this one's
origin in Darker Than Blue #50. Total playing time about 40 minutes only!
Avoid this one.

3. 24 CARAT PURPLE (1975) score 4. I never really liked this one. In the
1970's somebody might have bought it because it was EMI's first Purple
collection and there is a live version of Black Night. I don't understand
why EMI put this one out as cd.

4. THE BEST OF DEEP PURPLE (Specter Records, 1971, lp) score 4. The best,
indeed... but only from "Shades of DP" and the third album. Reminds me of a
band (whose name I've forgotten) that made a greatest hits compilation right
after their first album... Well, you can't blame DP. There just happened to
be an unfortunate record company that couldn't get its hands on better
stuff.

5. THE BEST OF DEEP PURPLE (Creative Sounds, 1987) score 4. The first time I
saw this one I just had to laugh. You can see Bolin, Coverdale, and Hughes
on cover yet the cd contains only Mk I material! The Tetragrammaton stuff
sure shows up in strange places! It is really hard to decide which "Best Of"
really is better. The only reason I can think of for this compilation is
that the first three DP records were not released on cd in America...

6. WHEN WE ROCK WE ROCK AND WHEN WE ROLL WE ROLL (1979) score 4. An American
compilation. Live and studio recordings from Mk I-III. I remember I bought
this one because I hadn't heard "Hard Road"... And I don't understand the
"recording studio in a UFO" cover.

7. PURPLEXED (1998) score 5. Hey, this gets better with time (last time I
gave this 4) This one's better than those above, but only because this one
has tracks no other compilation has. All tracks are taken from "Slaves and
Masters", "The Battle Rages On", "Come Hell Or High Water", or
"Purpendicular" i.e. the RCA/BMG albums. The better score, well it must be
that I now took only compilations and don't compare this one with original
studio albums.

8. KNOCKING AT YOUR BACK DOOR (1991) score 6. Songs from the three PolyGram
albums. If you want to have "Son of Aleric" and a 1987 live version of
"Space Trucking [sic]" on cd then this is a MUST for you. Made the same way
as "Purplexed": couple of songs from studio albums and "Smoke" and other
favourite oldies from live album. If you have this one you don't need to
have "Nobody's Perfect"...

Then the better ones.

9. THE MK II PURPLE SINGLES (1979, lp) score 8. Singles from Mk II and
edited versions of a couple of Made In Japan tracks (they could have had
been a nice addition to the remastered MiJ). Not released as cd (anywhere?),
even though there is a nice edit of "Woman from Tokyo" on it. I've had this
a long time but I haven't yet made up my mind whether this is a rip-off or a
collector's item.

10. DEEP PURPLE 30: VERY BEST OF (1 cd version, 1998) score 8. Songs from Mk

I's "Hush" to current line-up's "Any Fule Kno That", first time on one
album. Quite nice, but some edits are so bad I don't want to hear them!
Luckily one can also buy the better double cd version.

11. THE DEEP PURPLE SINGLES A'S & B'S (1978) score 8. Easy way to make a
nice DP compilation. Both sides from six early singles, so it made some rare
tracks easily available. Too bad it spans only 1968-1971.

12. SMOKE ON THE WATER (1994) score 8. The French made this one. It seems
they couldn't make up their minds whether to make this a greatest hits album
or singles compilation, so it falls somewhere between. Many nice single edit
rarities from 1968-1976, though.

13. POWERHOUSE (1977, lp) score 9. A fine collection of rarities - some
tracks are yet to be released on cd in Europe. I think "Cry Free" sounds
better here than on "In Rock 25". The co-operation between EMI and Simon
Robinson/DPAS begins.

14. DEEPEST PURPLE (1980) score 9. I should give this one 7 or 8 since it
covers only Mk II & III eras. But I can't be objective. It was the first DP
record I bought, and, each song on it is a classic. The original lp version
didn't have the best possible sound quality, but cd is alright.

15. ANTHOLOGY (1985, 2-lp) score 9. The better EMI compilation released
shortly after the reunion (the other one is "Greatest Purple"). Lovingly
detailed, songs from Mk I-IV, even some previously unreleased tracks, and a
well-written history. Back in 1985 this was the best possible way to get to
know DP's history.

16. DEEP PURPLE 30: VERY BEST OF (2 cd version, 1998) score 9. Simply great.
I'm glad the licensing problems got solved and this compilation became
reality. This almost feels like an expanded version of "Deepest Purple". I
only wish they had chosen more newer tracks. Sadly there are no pics on
booklet (licensing problems ;-)

17. SINGLES A'S & B'S (1993) score 9. The idea is same as with the original
lp, but this time it goes on until 1976. Classics, rarities, and single
edits. Great booklet with DP's recording history and EMI's UK discography
until 1985.

18. THE COMPACT DISC ANTHOLOGY (1991) score 9. A good way to get to know
DP's EMI years. There are both live and studio tracks and some unusual (yet
great) choices. Detailed history on booklet. With this one you can show
anybody (even those involved with the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame) what Deep
Purple really is about.

So how did I judge these albums? It was hard, and I still don't know which
one of my top 6 album is #1. In my opinion there are two kinds of good
compilations:

1. Albums containing only the best known and loved songs - the songs
everybody has heard. That makes albums like "Deepest Purple" and "Anthology"
prefect for new fans.

2. Albums containing rarities and odd versions of familiar songs. The more I
listen to DP (or any other artist or band) the more I want to hear some
curios. That is why I like "Powerhouse" and "Singles A's & B's".

Heikki

Greetings fellow purple heads, my name is Jeffro Hunter
and I am new to this great list! To answer Dean Webs question
on my nationality, I am from The U.S.- Sonoma, Ca. I was wondering
if anyone on this list could give me information on a guitarist named
Big Jim Sullivan. He was a neighbor of Ritchie Blackmore and was
Blackmores guitar teacher when Ritchie wasn't out throwing sacks of flour
at people from a moving vehicle! Was Jim a studio musician? If so, what's
his discography? I wonder how much of his style rubbed off on Blackmore.

Thanks,
Jefro...

Regarding Mike Ladd's comments about " Purple playing a show a couple of
weeks after the California Jam at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in
Charlotte NC", my notes show Deep Purple playing before the April 6,
1974 California Jam in Charlotte March 10, 1974. I believe that was in
the Coliseum.

Directly after Cal Jam, Deep Purple played April 7 in Phoenix, and San
Diego on the ninth and then they were off to Scotland, playing on the
18th.

Outside of that date, I have no knowledge of the Mark 3 lineup playing in
Charlotte. Does anyone on this list know of one other than that?

Correct on both accounts. The Stockholm gig was at Koncerthuset as stated,
while the Copenhagen gig was at KB-Hallen, not at Tivolis Konsertsal as
stated on the cover. (DP played KB-Hallen again this year, actually, and
has done so several times since 1972.)

As for the Copenhagen concert on audio - a few numbers will be included on
Connoisseur's upcoming "On the Road" 4CD, which is a project I really can't
work up any enthusiasm about.

Rule number one: when you wonder about a DP release, go to the discography
at http://www.deep-purple.com/.

Basically, there you'll find that the album is released in the US, but with
another name: "Live and Rare". However, I'm not sure whether this title is
still available, CDNow doesn't seem to carry it anymore. Neither does
MusicBoulevard. Hm, possibly deleted, then.

Instead of prawling the second hand shops, online retailer Music Boulevard
sell "Scandinavian Nights" for USD 20.49, surely not bad for a 2CD import.
There's a link to Music Boulevard from the section cryptically titled
"Links" at the Official Deep Purple homepages, http://www.deep-purple.com/

Scandinavian Nights and House o' Blues

I went to Ercusto's web site (he's the Turkish DP list moderator), at
http://surf.to/deep-purple and there was the excellent real video of the HoB
concert. After "Hush" and "Fireball", it went into "Into the Fire." Having
listened to "Into the Fire" recently on the Scandinavian Nights LP, recorded
in 1970, I found an excellent opportunity to compare the two.

Both rock, but Steve Morse is not Ritchie Blackmore. Not worse, just
different. It's exciting to hear new things, and I'm glad DP does enough new
stuff in their concerts so they don't become a traveling "Moldy Oldies"
roadshow. Makes me happy enough not to holler for IG to do Mk3/4/JLT
material. I liked both versions quite well and both have a place in the part
of my heart I reserve for Deep Purple. If you haven't heard either, follow
Trond's suggestions to get the recording, and surf to Ercusto's site (or
liveconcerts.com) for the webcast. One you'll enjoy searching for, the
other's free and here right now!

OK, now I gotta update the website... I'm behind in posting to the archive
and updating the links, but I hope to have them ready in a short while. All
for now, and awopbopaloomopabopbamboom.
