Sorry this is coming out late. Sorry also it won't be all the messages I
have waiting for you. Rather than point fingers and air dirty laundry, I'll
just say things got unexpectedly busy at work and got in the way of other
things. Not to fear, I'll clear the decks, 14 or 15 messages at a time. If
you get several digests in a short amount of time, it's only because I
didn't want to put out a big ol' honker all at once. Onward.

I've never heard all of WDWTWA, so I was wondering if someone could
tell me how the whole album rates compared to the early Mk II albums,
for which I have the highest regard.,

Thanks,

[Dean: check out the ratings at the DPD homepage... it got a good rating,
but was the lowest of the Mk2 work. Personally, I love it. It ain't Machine
Head, but it's quite a lot better than Slaves & Masters. (Some would
substitute diferent albums in there, but I think the list in general feels
it's not their best, but among some of their better work.]

I was at the concert in Munich and a friends estimation, who was not (like
me)
the first time in the Olympiahalle was 5-6.000 fans and I must agree. 13.000
would be fine, but this number is only reached by Rod Stewart, Phil
Collins...
Don't ask me why :-)

Hello list!

Dean asked if Rainbow played more Purple songs at concerts than Mistreated.
I
went to the the band live in Düsseldorf in 1995 and and I have two Bootlegs
of
the show and the VHS Video tape (the show was broadcasted on German TV).
There were a couple of Purple songs in the set: Long live Rock n' roll (inc.
Black Night), Perfect Strangers, Burn and Smoke on the Water. Great
stuff...and I can remember that a friend told me that they were playing
Mistreated on some other shows as well. So, this means 5 Purple songs in the
set and I can remember that people started complaining about this at the
time
because they wanted to hear Rainbow's songs :-)
I think they also do Purple stuff with Blackmore's Night..Candice is singing
them....possibly Black Night was amongst them...can't remember...

Cover versions:
Speed King - Primal Fear
I had the honour to chat with their singer Ralf in a chat room of German
Magazine Rock Hard earlier this year and some people asked him about the
cover
version of Speed King because they were of the opinion Kai Hansen (ex-
Helloween..guest on the album) ruined the guitar solo (sounded more like
Helloween than Purple). Ralf simply answered that they did record the song
as
the like it...and I love it too. By the way., two members of Primal Fear are
also playing in a German band called Sinner who will surport Deep Purple on
the upcoming German shows (Mat and Tom). Sinner's favourite bands are
Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy..maybe they'll play a cool cover song???

Impellitteri - Highway Star
Cool version of this song with very bad sound quality. The Officicial Live
Bootleg also features "Over the Rainbow" which is great as well :-)

By the way, I ordered Mother's Army's new album "Fire on the Moon" with JLT
on
vocals on Monday...it's out now in Europe on USG/Eastwest. I haven't
received
it yet...

>A couple of quick comments. As far as the largest audience gig, I think I
remember Purple playing a show a couple of weeks after the California Jam at
the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte NC with many of the same bands and
the same format as The California Jam. They called it the August Jam and
ELP and DP played back to back and then the Allman Brothers were miscast as
the final act. They sold like 150,000 tickets but when the music started
thousands of people charged the fences around the complex and they ended up
with nearly 250,000 people.
>
>Second subject. Another band that put out a few good early albums that DP
fans should like...Nazareth. I saw them as the opening act at a DP show in
Charlotte in 1972...they were introduced by Roger Glover... and they rocked
the house. They have released some less than steller albums but Razamataz
is a rocker with the title cut Razamataz, Sold My Soul, and Alcatraz being
killers. Listen to the solos on the latter 2 songs and you can hear the
Blackmore influence. also Rampant and Loud and Proud are good albums.
Unfortunately they will always be scared by the piece of &%$# single Love
Hurts, which really did hurt their reputation as a rock band.

>Rainbow Rising/Rainbow...a rock classic
>
>Northwinds/Coverdale...not really a rock album but some superior songs and
great bluesy vocals..."Only My Soul" is a great cut
>
>Addiction/Glenn Hughes....okay, I know the guy says he doesn't care to do
rock music any more but this is still one of the best rock albums in years
>
>Hughes/Thrall....great driving rock and roll
>
>Mr. Universe/Gillan....felt I should add this since I mentioned both
Coverdale and Hughes and left out the best of the DP frontmen.

The three best albums after Purple???
This IS difficult! There are so many albums and 95 per cent of them are
good. Or great. Or fantastic....

If I MUST choose I'll go for:
1. Slide It In - Whitesnake
2. Trouble - Whitesnake
3. Rising - Rainbow

But this means I have to neglect Born Again, Mr Universe, Long Live Rock
N Roll, Down To Earth, Toolbox, Future Schock, Seventh Star, Love
Hunter, Saints An' Sinners.........
Can't we name TEN each instead?!

I am quite certain that Deep Purple's live album Scandinavian Nights was
performed in Stockholm on November 12, 1970. The video that was released
(and I believe never released officially on audio) was performed in
Copenhagen March 1, 1972.

If someone's already stated the exact dates, sorry I didn't notice.

Rob
I've never spent a night in Scandinavia (but if I was warm enough I
wouldn't mind at all)

Rainbow did SOTW many times with JLT lineup and again on SIUA tour. The
latter also have seen Burn, WFT, Hey Joe (Hey O.J.) and snippets of Black
Night thrown into LLRnR.

link from the DPD page to CDNOW!, where I think it can be purchased. If I'm
wrong, then head to used record stores and search for years...}

Whitesnake did "Might just take your life" and "Soldier of fortune".
Rainbow did "Smoke on the water".

Yep! Every DP fan should have this IMO. If you can't find the "real"
version I am sure you can get it from the traders.
