I cranked up the old exercycle so I don't freeze my ears off *and* can jam out with a real stereo, not some punk Walkman. I started with a tape of "Black and Blue", a tape of a Black Sabbath/Blue Oyster Cult concert. I played "Neon Knights" and "NIB" from that set. Dio rules on "Neon Knights", by the way. (Side note: I wondered if Rainbow or Whitesnake ever did any other DP tunes besides "Mistreated." Anybody know?) Then I decided to put on Scandinavian Nights: the LP, since I was going to get beat up about the LP/video differences in this issue of the list. Now, when I ride the stationary bike, I like to keep at a speed of 30-40 MPH (sorry, the bike's not metric... that would be 40-50 KPH) for 20-30 minutes, depending on the length of the album side. I also like to play "air drums" and keep up with the drummer I'm listening to to get that upper-body workout. Keeping up with Vinnie Appice was at a reasonable level of difficulty. He kept real good time, which helped. When I put side 2 of Scandinavian Nights on, though, I nearly had a stroke trying to duplicate Ian Paice! This version of "Speed King" was amazing. First, it had the "Blackmore doesn't know the tape is rolling" factor, which meant the guitar was going to be grand. (Just like I remembered it woule be!) What I forgot, though, was that Ian Paice was from the *progressive* school of drumming, which meant they didn't drum to keep time. They drummed to rival the solos of the other players in the group. John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Bill Ward come to mind as drummers that slung beats around with reckless abandon the way Paicey did on this track. I was SO thankful for that quiet part in the middle so I could catch my breath a while, but when that wild climax started to build, I knew I was in trouble. Somewhere in the last verse, I cried out, "Nunca mais!" (don't know why it was Portuguese this time... that just happens, sometimes), and let my arms fly off to the side as I exploded, leaving a blob of green jelly on the bicycle seat. Thank goodness I expired before the drum solo on "Paint it Black"! All this made me wonder why drummers don't explode on stage more often. If you think you're in shape, just you try and keep up with Ian on this track. Now, I know not all of you have this LP or CD, so I'll keep looking for other workout tracks you may want to try. "Speed King" from Scandinavian Nights, though, is the best. At the end, Ian Gillan says, "Speed King is a song that will raise a sweat... among other things." Time to towel down... ___________________________________________ >From Dean Webb: mailto:dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com Your editor is a practising masochist... New member or old, suggest your links, 1-10 ratings for DP discs, or bands that rock da house (haus in German) as hard as Purple. If you're swift with HTML, you could even copy the format of a Celeb. I've always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with BA, probably as it followed "Mob Rules", which IMHO was the crowning moment of Dio era Sabbath. However as the years have gone on I've found myself digging out BA more and more. Songs like "Digital Bitch" and "Hot Line" seem almost throw away and a bit like piss-takes, but Iommi's riffs and Gillan's screams are absolutely killer. My personal faves have got to be "Trashed" ("Well BLESS my sooouuuUUAAAAAOOOOOAALLLLLL!!!!!"), "Stonehenge" going into "Disturbing the Priest" (subtlety, what's subtlety?!?!?!) and "Keep it Warm" has a great riff and feel to it, the only track without any screaming on I believe! I honestly feel that the power and range of Gillan's voice is unparalleled on this album and I have never heard him scream better, from the low throat garglers to the glass shatterers right up to the stratospheric ones. His voice is awesome on BA, but listen to him just a year later on "Perfect Strangers" and it sounds as if he can hardly scream at all. Has anyone else noticed how weak his screams are during say, "Hungry Daze". He sings great on PS but there certainly seems to be no comparison. I wonder what it would have sounded like if we'd had the DP reunion a year earlier... Simon C. [Dean "ed" Webb: I know Gillan said he went in for tonsil surgery just after the Perfect Strangers tour. Could be a reason. IG was certainly hollering plenty on recent stuff I've seen of his.] ___________________________________________ -----Original Message----- From: John LaRocque To: Deep Purple Digest Date: Tuesday, November 10, 1998 11:40 AM Subject: RE: Deep Purple Digest #26 Brigitt writes: >To John LaRocque: Uah...you posted your comments related to my post on both the DP Mailing List and the Werock-Diolist...:-) Yes, that's true! If they didn't know they were being taped, it probably had a better than average chance of being awesome." I understand that Ritchie was this way especially, and in the studio as well. He'd play fantastic when just messing around, but when the recording light was on he'd become very conscious of it and his performance would suffer. Roger would even run tape without the recording light being on to catch Ritchie's performances that wouldn't be heard otherwise. Also I can agree with Paul Sommer's choices for Steve Morse's peak performances: Sometimes i Feel Like Screaming & Dont make me Happy. Those do kick, and I am a major Blackmore fan. As for coming up with Ritchie's best performances, that would take a while to go through material that would be most guitarists best moments that are just average or below average for Ritchie. But off the top of my head, I sure like Burn and Why Didn't Rosemary. They sprang from the same roots as Purple, and the early albums have a lot of the same musical stylings as the Purps did. However, in my opinion, Heep lost their way after their "Live" LP in 1973. The first 5 studio albums are excellent, with "Look At Yourself" probably being the best one, with "Demons And Wizards" close behind. Most of the albums from 74-94 are so hit and miss, and crippled with numerous line-up changes, that they lost all credibility. Unlike Purple however, they've released some truly horrible records, that are embarrassingly bad. Among them are "Different World", "Raging Silence", "Equator" and most of the John Lawton era stuff. I saw them live three times while he was the singer, and they weren't bad in concert, just on vinyl. But the anti-Heep attitude goes way back before that. It seems even more bitter than the Zep/Purple feud. I don't understand where that came from. The Zep thing seems to stem from them being so much more popular than all their 70's contemporaries. Purple fans seem to resent Zeppelin's success, feeling Purple suffered in the shadows. Heep never had the success Purple did, so I don't get the rivalry. Granted, Purple had the dignity to disintegrate in 1976, after releasing a good, but different, album, while Heep lumbered through the decade, releasing the most faceless series of records in rock history (next to Foghat that is). They also had so many line-up changes, that they make Blackmore look like a long-term employer. Hmmmm, while proofing this, I'm struck with the thought that I may have answered my own question. Never mind. Jim C. [Dean "What anti-Heep attitude?" Webb: What anti-Heep attitude? So we're not all their biggest fans... so far, I've heard pretty strong recommends for their first few years and the latest stuff they made. Not very anti-, now, is that? Or do we need to have DP '73 go against UH '73 head-to-head? As far as Zeppelin goes, DP and LZ don't really compare one-to-one for me. LZ was bluesier and muscially closer to Jethro Tull in my opinion. LZ contributed a few guys to Screaming Lord Sutch, though, so they had to have some redeeming features...] ___________________________________________ -----Original Message----- From: Matt Runyon To: dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com Date: Tuesday, November 10, 1998 6:15 PM Subject: Favorite "outside DP albums" Top three albums (outside of DP) by members of DP 1. I have heard the rumors too, let's hope the managers and promoters can get their act together and sort something out cause there are a LOT of older (like me) and newer fans that are hanging out to see them. I last saw the boys back in '84 at the start of the Perfect Strangers world tour and we have been starved ever since. Just missed out seeing them on their first tour back in 71 but I was only 12 at the time and wasn't allowed to go!! Anyway hope they do get here next year, I'll have to save the money and follow them round the country. Maybe they could also come here in 2000 for the closing of the 2000 Sydney Olmypic's (imagine playing in front of 110,000 people at the closing ceremony, well I can dream can't I !!). And finally, Paul Sommers asked in issue 26 about getting copies of Concerto Book of Talisyn Slaves and Masters As far as I know they ARE available locally, because I've seen them. Maybe contact a HMV music store in Sydney (and they are reasonably priced). I've only had to pay extra through the import shops for the most recent stuff and MH25. See Ya! Maybe it's stated wrong on the tapes case but it says the concert (on the video) was recorded on Denmark, March 1st, 1972. The quality is..let's say okay..it's old and mono sound...a little excerpt from the case: "In March 1972, Deep Purple had just finished work on the Machine Head album, which was to take them to the top of the album charts across the world. This show contains three songs from that LP, together with half a dozen classics from their earlier stage act..." So, this video must have been filmed in 1972...and I can remember that I saw an advertisement at the end of the video for the CD version and I think it's said there said the CD was recorded in 1970...strange stuff. I haven't got the Scandinavian Nights CD, so I can't check it out. Are this two different concerts..one on video and one on CD?
