Favorite album: In Rock
Favorite member: Jon Lord
Best song: Highway Star (Made in Japan version)

I just got the 25th anniversary editions of In Rock and Fireball from CD
Universe and they both sound great! I had no idea "Speed King" had an
introduction to it. I've listened to the American version for 15 years or
more. Why weren't the lyrics included on these editions?

[Dean "Ed" Webb: actually, I've got *two* versions of the intro to "Speed
King", both on vinyl. One is on Deepest Purple and is organ intro only. The
other is on an In Rock picture disc and has the full band doing some stuff,
followed by the aforementioned organ bit. I like the *complete* version on
my picture disc best.]

Subject: New to list

Hi All,

This is my first post to this list, so let me give you a little
information about me. I'm 35, live on the New Jersey coast, U.S.A.,with
Peter Gabriel era Genesis being my fave band of all-time, and have been a
DP fan since about 1977. Never have seen them live, though. My fave line
ups are (in order) Mk 2, and Mk 1 era DP. A few weeks ago, whilst
browsing through the cut out cassette bin of a large discount store
chain, I snapped up the first three DP releases for a $1.99 each, as I
was too cheap to lay out the cash for the import CD's! Now mind you these
tapes sound as if they were recorded straight from someones original
L.P.'s (I swear I can hear the scratches!) on a "lo-fi" stereo system!
But if that's the only way I could find 'em, so be it. I listen to them
ALL THE TIME!!, with The Book Of Taliesyn, and the self titled being
current faves, especially the tune Chasing Shadows, and River Deep,
Mountain High off Book of Taliesyn. I really feel Rod Evans voice was
coming along quite good on the DP release, and just let me say that Mr.
Ian Paice kicked some serious ass right from the get-go, simply amazing,
he's King of the Snare Roll, in my book! Other later releases i'm fond of
are of course In Rock, Fireball, and who can forget Machine Head (Maybe
I'm a Leo RULES!) Well, that's about all for now, I look forward to some
good posting regarding one of the greatest bands ever.

Ted

Just picked up the new (1998 and I have not seen it before) double live Dio
disc entitled " Inferno: Last in Live"
It includes Mistreated (interpolating Catch the Rainbow), Man on the Silver
Mountain, Long Live Rock and Roll and most of the Holy Diver record. His
voice is fine, though the guitarist for this recording somewhat lame. I am
sure all Dio fans still miss Viv Campbell or TMIB, but all in all not a bad
disc to spin.

I hate to use the digest for trading, but it is the best way to get to all
the great Deep Purple collectors out there..I do quite alot of trading, but
I
don't have that much DP... I have plenty of stuff to trade, like Clapton,
SRV,
Allman Bros, Gov't Mule, Hendrix, etc.... Any one out there who can help me
get some quality DP shows please email me..I'll send you my list, and maybe
wecan work a trade..Thanks in advance, sorry for taking up Digest space..

[Dean "Ed" Webb: actually, it's no waste of space. I myself have availed
myself of the services of a tape trader twice before. The catch is that all
such stuff other than the initial letter of interest is off the list. If I
get mail for it, I might route it along if I have the time, but don't count
on it! (My having the time, that is.)]

What is the title of the album of Jon Lord with the London Symphonic
Orchestra recorded before the Deep Purple In Rock album? Has it been
released on CD?

N. Borger

[Dean "Ed" Webb: The title is: Deep Purple Concerto for Group and Orchestra
(with subtitles: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Conducted by Malcolm Arnold.)
On CD? Haven't seen it in stores, but it's on CD. The vinyl version has only
the orchestral parts, one CD had "Wring That Neck" and "Child in Time" on it
and another, higher priced one, was a Japanese version. I found both CDs at
CDNOW. BTW, there was also a version of "Hush" recorded at that concert,
which is available on the Powerhouse release, which includes the other two
tracks.]

Subject: Rory Gallagher/Jan Akkerman

Two questions:

In the latest MOJO magaizine (the best music mag around), there's an article
about Rory Gallagher and a mention that he was asked to join DP around
1973/1974. Does anyone know the details of this? With all respect to Tommy
Bolin (RIP), Gallagher would have been amazing in DP!

Also: John Heald/Darlene Heald mentioned a Forcefield album(s) with Jan
Akkerman playing with Graham Bonnet. John/Darlene, whichever one you are,
(or anyone else) what are the details of these albums? Is the band's name
indeed Forcefield? Which ones does Akkerman play on? What style is it? Are
they available in the States? I'm an Akkerman fanatic -- I must know!

Thanxs in advance,

Jim DeKoven

[Dean "Ed" Webb: Never heard the rumor before, but that would have been just
too awesome for words if Gallagher (also RIP) could have been in DP!
Coverdale's voice is great for the blues, and it would have been nice to
hear him sing with Gallagher's great guitar. Of course, Rory had a fine
enough voice himself, as if DP Mk3 didn't have enough crowding on the
mikes...]

The Lowdown on The House of Blue Light

The follow-up to Perfect Strangers came out in early 1987. I know this
because that's when I went out and got the tape during my first year in
college. I got the vinyl later on when I came home for the summer. It would
be the last DP studio release on vinyl that I would ever buy. That wasn't
DP's fault, just the changing nature of formats music got released on in the
US.

Some of the comments on SM being a Rainbow album got me thinking on PS
(previous issue) and I decided to follow-up on HOBL. I had remembered it
being very pop-oriented and how it sounded a lot like Rainbow's Bent Out of
Shape. Now, 11 years later, I went back for a critical listen to the platter
(the tape got swiped out of a car long ago).

First off, a trend I caught made me think of another comparision besides SM
or Rainbow's BOOS: CTTB. Side one (the first five tracks) had an indelible
Blackmore stamp. Side two belonged to Gillan. If Glenn Hughes had been in
this lineup, they would've needed to include a bonus EP...

Bad Attitude: Great tune. I really liked the keyboard part at the end, but
wished it was a little more intricate. This is a theme I will see repeated
throughout the LP.

The Unwritten Law: Another Blackmore solo, another multitracked vocal,
another song without a Lord solo. I started to wonder if JLT would've made
it as a guest vocalist on this album halfway through the song.

Call of the Wild: I love this tune, even though it is pure pop. It's a fun
bit of Gillan lyric on top of a beer-n-pretzels rock line. Yeah, Blackmore
plays another solo, but I don't mind on this one. If any song on this side
could go over to Gillan, this would be it.

Mad Dog: JLT ought to get the rights to this song. I really wondered if this
one was left out of the final mix of BOOS. A really hard Blackmore riff and
a goofed-up solo from Lord. Was the Hammond in the shop during this album's
sessions?

Black & White: Another one JLT ought to seriously consider covering. (BTW, I
mean that in a good way for all the recommends I make in this review. I
think JLT is a great singer when the material suits him. Don't want him
doing "Child in Time", but he's the man on "Eyes of Fire.") Score so far on
the solos: RB 5, JL 0.5. And each one of those RB solos is a post-Dio (1980
or later) style solo, not that really awesome heavy metal style axemanship
he did prior ot 1980. RB is good, but not hard rockin' or progressive enough
to suit my needs.

Hard Lovin' Woman: Gillan wrote this after having a few drinks with David
Coverdale, I'm sure. If not, it sure seems he did. Of course, the last verse
where the man really loses control of the situation would have to be left
off, but Coverdale was comfortable with doing that on a couple of other DP
songs, so it wouldn't be too bad. (Side note: ever notice how on "Take Me
With You", Coverdale repeats the first verse rather than sing a third verse?
Coincidence? I think not. He was *trained* that way!) Blackmore's whiny
guitar makes another solo appearance.

The Spanish Archer: "Smooth Dancer" from WDWTWA was Gillan's comment on how
relations with Blackmore were deteriorating. This song struck me as perhaps
having a similar sentiment behind it. This track has some really wild lyrics
and almost sounds like it could have come off of Abandon or _|_. (Almost.) I
went back and read through the lyrics and it sounds like a foreboding letter
of resignation. Blackmore's solo, being more classically-influenced on this
track, is one of the best he does on the LP. Kinda like the one he did from
"Smooth Dancer" was a real ace on WDWTWA. This comparison deserves further
probing.

Strangeways: Another proto-Purpendicular/Abandon song. Lord's keyboards get
a chance to do some shining and Blackmore's solo is less Rainbow-y than the
others. Be interesting to see the current lineup do this one.

Mitzi Dupree: The third proto-_|_ or /-\ song. Doubt me? Lyrically, this
one's "Ted the Mechanic" without the rapping. It's a great blusey tune and
has the best moment on the whole album when Gillan does that "I said
Ooooo-ooo-ooo have another drink." Excellent acting from IG. Oh yeah,
another Blackmore solo.

Dead or Alive: This one came out of Ritchie's bag for sure. It's the cousin
of "Fire Dance" from BOOS. (and "Mad Dog" owes a connection to "Drinking
with the Devil") Lord actually gets to solo twice, but so does Ritchie. A
good rocker, but somehow not completely satisfying.

So this album has the Rainbow flavor of BOOS and SM, the experimentation of
_|_, the contentions of CTTB, and the good-bye kiss of WDWTWA. Of all these
comparisons, however, the strongest one seems to be CTTB. The band is pulled
between Blackmore and Gillan and a breakup seems imminent (in hindsight). I
kept thinking of CTTB as I listened and even started humming "Comin' Home"
after the album finished. Now I got "You Keep on Moving" going through my
head. If Blackmore had showed up to play Deep Purple music, HOBL would have
been the stronger album of the two. I would have to give this LP (now CD) a
5. Better than SM, not as good as CTTB, and a loooooong way from WDWTWA.

I think Blackmore missed a great opportunity not having Ian Gillan continue
as his singer in Rainbow. He probably also missed having about 500 more
breakup songs written about him by IG.

In other news from the editor...

I'll have the updated ratings and archives up on Monday or Tuesday. The HTML
editor I was using up and died yesterday... I think it was related to either
global warming, Y2K, or warm-water concentrations in the eastern Pacific.
Could've also been demonic possession of the code, a voodoo witchdoctor, a
witchy voodoodoctor, or the Bavarian Illuminati. Anyway, I got a new editor
I think I'll like a lot, so I gotta learn it. It isn't rocket science, or
even Analytical Geometry, so the new stuff should be up pretty soon. Hope
this delay won't put anyone's lives in jeopardy. If it will, please email me
and I'll see what I can work out. :-)
