DEEP PURPLE DIGEST #2 In this issue: Is Ian Losing His Voice? Membership doubled in less than a day! Celebrity Deathmatch section on its way! Review requests ___________________________________________ From: Tom SwobodaTo: Deep Purple List Date: Friday, August 28, 1998 8:35 PM Subject: Current Tour I was just wondering if anyone here has seen Purple on the Abandon tour, and what you thought. I heard the three or four songs were axed from the set because Ian's losing his voice; did you notice any problems with Ian? --T.J. ___________________________________________ >From the Big Cheese, Dean Webb: mailto:dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com Since I sent out #1 earlier this day, membership leaped to 22 members! PUN!) dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com The DPD home site will soon have a section for the list archives, your (non-review) stellar contributions of art, music, and written works, and a spot for celebrity deathmatches. Let me define the idea behind celebrity deathmatches: Quite often, fans of opposing camps square off and holler at each other over who was the better musician. I think the musicians themselves should settle things *mano a mano* in the ring of deathmatch combat. Of course, I don't really want anybody to get killed (your intentions may vary), but I think it would be kinda neat to imagine various artistes squaring off against each other. For fun and charity, of course. Anyway, I wouldn't want anyone I didn't like listening to to win out, so they always lose in my little matches. What I want in the celebrity deathmatch site are artists you consider worthy of comparison to Deep Purple and what works they've done that relate to DP work. These guys should be "winners" for folks who like certain DP stuff and could hold their own for a few rounds (of drinks) against DP. For instance, a fan of both DP and Rory Gallagher could contribute an Rory Gallagher entry to celebrity deathmatch. (Sadly, Mr. Gallagher is dead, but his music fights on, full of life, so he can still compete, as can Hendrix, John Bonham, etc.) The Gallagher fan would point out his outstanding work as a blues guitarist and vocalist and how the bluesier sounds of DP fit right alongside his work. The fan could further point out DP links of interest such as how Rory supported DP on tour and how Roger Glover produced one of his albums, the highly recommendable Calling Card. The fan could then say that if you really like "Lazy" and "Place in Line", you'll probably enjoy Rory Gallagher. Mentioning a good site or two (no more than two, please: those sites usually got links pages on them) and including a non-copyrighted picture (album art usually works) would be good. I have over 1000 albums, lots from artists that go well with a glass of Purple, so I might have something to go with your recommend to the hall of champions in the celebrity deathmatch area. Post the stuff to the list, and I'll be Zeus, lifting the great deeds of you mortals to the stellar regions of my website. (Wait, let me soak my head a bit. It seems to have swollen a bit...) To rephrase, post to the list and I'll put it on the website for posterity and the betterment of DP fans everywhere. ___________________________________________ >From the DPD editor dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com I don't currently own Live at the Olympia or The Battle Rages On. Could any of you folks that either own or have listened to them post a review? (I'll probably buy them anyway, but this is a clever subterfuge to get things cooking...) ___________________________________________ Quote for the moment: Never hit a man with glasses.
