This is more on the /-\ and _|_ discussion. I recall saying that /-\ had
more songs that stuck in my head. Well, the very next day I was humming
stuff from _|_. Go figure. Both albums are great, but I still give the
teensiest edge to Abandon.

Just today, I was humming "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference". Does this
mean that Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything album is one of the best DP
albums in recent years? :-) Well, maybe not, but Mr. Rundgren can pen a
catchy little tune...

Well, back to the list!

Well, I just unpacked after a week away from home, and picked up some
DP-related items while I was away.

I just picked up RPM's 2CD reissues of Nick Simper's "Warhorse". What great
stuff. The singer is not quite on the Gillan level, but boy can he howl. The
sound was somewhat reminiscent of Mark I DP. Overall, I quite enjoyed the
CDs.

Also found some other cool collectibles in the last week, including:
1) Coverdale/Page single (not listed at the DP website), with alternate
edits and stuff.
2) Hush 88 single with "Dead or Alive" and "Bad Attitude" as B-sides. Note,
Dead or Alive is only found on this single or the cassette version of
Nobody's Perfect, the only official live recording of this track.

Ay ay ay!

Where best albums are concerned, I can understand why Queensr˙che's
"Operation Mindcrime" and Savatage's "Gutter Ballet" are so high in
position; they are amazingly solid efforts with no bad songs
whatsoever. But "Images and Words" as No.1? Don't get me wrong, it's
my favorite DT album, but there is no way in hell it could top stuff
like "Fireball". You're right...how can "Fireball" be so far behind?
It's one of the greatest albums to grace these ears ever. I guess the
reason is that a lot of kids today (I'm 19, so I'm not trying to play
the "the old days were obviously better" routine) are not acquainted
with a lot of classic albums, but have only heard the bands'
names...Just for example, most kids I know have only heard one or two
original Black Sabbath song, but a lot of them have heard the
"Nativity In Black" tribute album. It's really a shame, because there
are a lot of great albums from the 70's (I would have also liked to
see Diamond Head there)!

Best guitar player:
Where did Steve Vai end up? And what the hell happened to Hendrix?
He should be at least in the first three, Other people sorely missing
at the top: Jimmy Page (even though his technique was not that great),
Eddie Van Halen, Kirk Hammett, well, there's too many. It is,
however, nice to know that some people remember Warren de Martini
(what amazing solos!). Ritchie in No.5? (I think he'd be at 3 for
me). And Kai in 2? He's a great composer (his Helloween songs are
among the best Helloween material), but I don't think he's one of the
greatest guitar players of all time.

Best drummers:
Ayayayayay! Where in the bloody hell is Rush's Neil Peart? That's a
number 1 that's definitely missing! AT least DP drummers are higly
regarded. Good, becasue Ian Paice is a genius, and the beginning of
"Fireball" is to me a great drumming moment (there are a lot of those
too in "In Rock").

Best bassist:
Again missing Rush? GEDDY LEE!!! And where is Glenn Hughes? He's a
better player, IMHO, than Roger Glover (although Glover is a producing
and composing genius)! Good to see Steve Harris there, but this
Helloween craze is getting ridiculous...it's just like when Metallica
was it and James Hetfield got voted all the time as best singer
(??!!!). I have 5 Helloween albums but I'm not going to forget that a
great band is a group, whereas a great player is an individual who
plays well within a group (I love Mötley Crüe and would never say that
Nikki Sixx is one of te best bassists of all time!). Finally, where's
metallica's Cliff Burton?

Best keyboard player:
2. Jon Lord - Deep Purple

YES!!! JUSTICE! (but he sould be no.1).

Best singer:
OK, there's something very screwed up here, and that's Gillan not
being in the top 10 and Dio being in no.1. He's a great singer, no
doubt, but he's also a generic metal singer and is no contest when you
consider old and recent greats like Dickinson, Halford, Gillan,
Sebastian Bach, Geoff Tate, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury..well, I'd
go on but it's no use.

Unfortunately, best of lists have one major flaw...they're always led
by trends and don't reflect well-thought opinions, but the desire of a
band's fans to put their band everywhere possible. Especially unfair,
IMHO, was Gillan's position. I think I'll go help correct that right
now!

[Dean "Ed" Webb - Get in there and vote! It may be an unofficial set of
rankings, but it still counts for something!]

It's Blackmore/Lord/Paice according to my 1985 vinyl copy of the
compilation "The Anthology".

[Confirmed also by Christian Rutz:]

In the sleeve notes of the CD-Version of "Singles A's and B's" it says
Blackmore/Lord/Paice.

Dear Huitzilopochtli Osiris (is this an Aztec name???):

Demon's Eye showed as the B-side for Fireball single, in 1971. I have
the song at home in the two versions of Singles A's & B's: in vinyl
(1978, white cover with a woman in purple suit) and in CD (1993, with
some single covers). I guess the New Singles A's & B's is easier to
find. Keep your eye on the libretto on it, it's very very interesting.

one, as far as I can tell, was ever a credited musician on any DP album or

given a "No Thanks To..." on Rainbow's Long Live Rock and Roll album.]

in reply to Joe James "Critical Abandon"

Hey Joe!
I agree to most of the stuff you wrote about "Abandon" and most of my
friends
think so as well. It's one of the biggest disappointments so far this year
to
me. And most of my friends who lihe Purple are disappointed too.
But I'm going to them live on Oct.7th in Essen, Germany because I think they
are still great as a live band. I saw two DP shows in 1996 (in Essen and in
Cologne, Germany) and I loved it a lot. I liked all the "Purpendicular"
stuff.
I'm not sure weather I'll like those new songs from "Abandon" or not...we'll
see.
Ian Gillan's opinion on "Abandon" made me smile recently. I think I can
remember that he said in an interview that "Abandon" is the best Deep Purple
album ever... :-)
Oh no...but that's my opinion....

Will German Power Metal band "Rage" be the opening act for Deep Purple's
gigs in Germany again??? Will the bring the "small" orchestra with them?
Rage are a great German Metal band from the area where I live as well. So,
the
gig in Essen would be something special for them....I saw Rage in concert in
1995 with Blind Guardian, Saxon & Yngwie Malmsteen in Düsseldorf...on of the
best concerts I've ever seen....

Subject: favourite bands...besides Purple

Hello!

I'm always looking for new bands discover because I'm absolutely in all sort
of heavy music as long as it is melodic. I'm collecting CDs and therefore, I
have a question to all of the members on this list:
Which bands or albums can you recommend?
Here are my current Top 5 favourite CDs:
1. Axel Rudi Pell - Oceans of Time
One of my very favourite bands. German guitar player with a lot Rainbow
influences in his music. "Oceans of time" was released in Europe last
week and is recommended to be the best European Hard Rock album this year in
some reviews. Also featuring: Johnny Gioeli (ex-Hadrline) on vocals who
replaced JS Soto, Ferdy Doernberg of Rough Silk on keys and Jörg Michael of
Stratovarius on drums who will be replaced by Mike Terrana (ex-Malmsteen)
for the next tour...
I'm mainting on of his websites and in an interview two weeks ago he
told
my what it was like to meet Ritchie who is his favourite musician...check it
out...
2. Burning Starr - s/t
Re-release of two albums from Virgin Steele's former guitar player Jack
Starr with Mike Tirelli of Holy Mother on vocals. Great Power Metal from New
York.
3. Pink Cream '69 - Electrified
Back on top! One of Germany's best Hard Rock bandsare back into the
Melodic kind of music and left their Grunge past behind them.
4. Rhapsody - Emerald Sword (Maxi-cd)
New songs from the upcoming album. Italian Power Metal with Orchestra
stuff. Track 2 "Where Dragons fly" sounds like a mix between Blind Guardian
and Blackmore's Night.
5. Rock is back! - Various artists
Sampler which available for the price of a maxi-cd with bands from the
German label SPV on it: Dio, Judas Priest, Styx, Blue Öyster Cult, Night
Ranger, Tommy Shaw and a lot others...value for money....and a great
rockin' cd

And you all? What are listening to?

Birgitt

P.S: Thanks go out to Dean and all the others who voted in the poll on my
page!!!!

To those critical of "ABANDON" I find your reviews weak and illl fated.
"Abandon" stands on it's own as a superb Purple record - period. The band is
tight and having fun. It seems these old Purple fans cannot accept the
progression of the band. Then they bitch and whine about "Woman from Tokyo,
Hush, and Strange Kind of Woman" being in the current set list. Well I have
seen Purple 30 times since the early seventies as a youngster tagging along
with an older brother to concerts both in Europe were we spent summers and
here close by across the border in Detroit, and this year was the FIRST time
I heard "Hush" played! Ian's version is soooooo much better than that lame
Mk1 version that I must say it was a pleasure to hear it proper in concert!
As for SKoW and WFT, how can you do a show without them? They have been
trademark backbones of the set since their inception and still receive
tremendous fan reaction!

To those who don't like Abandon, I suggest you spin Slaves and Masters one
more time! Enough said!

Well, I've followed this argument with amusement since the album was
released. While the thought of JLT as a member of DP is a horrible one,
it's a fact that it indeed happened. They hired him, they released the
album and toured as DP, so I guess that about makes it as legit as can
be.Using some of the logic found here to classify it as a Rainbow album,
well, that makes Ready An' Willing a DP album right? Coverdale and Lord
bringing in Paice, whats the difference? As much as I hate to admit it,
Turner was as much a member as Bolin, only JLT was in much longer than
Bolin was. And unfortunately, the S&M album charted better, at least in
the States, better than anything since HOBL. Now THAT is a crime! So is
the fact that the last 2 JLT Rainbow studio releases charted higher here
than everything else Rainbow ever did, except the 1st Rainbow album.
Maybe it's the wig? Jim C.

Subject: Comments & questions

Hi Dean!

Here are some comments and questions:

1. I don't think your Overcharged Ego Band (OEB) had the best (or should it
read worst) possible line-up. So could you consider these changes?

BASS:
I think Lemmy would definitely not be the bass player in that band. I don't
want OEB to be ELP with Ritchie & David Lee Roth, so Greg Lake is out of
question, too. I give my vote to Roger Waters. Another possible bassist is
Scott Thunes. He was in the Frank Zappa band for some years and was hated by
all his bandmates.

DRUMS:
Why not Tommy Lee. When not beating his drums he's beating his wife...

KEYBOARDS:
Keith Emerson, Jerry Lee Lewis, or SIR Elton John. Maybe Emerson, because
the others would prefer piano to Hammond.

[Dean "Ed" Webb: so we got Blackmore, David Lee Roth, Tommy Lee, Roger
Waters, and how about SIR Elton "Can I milk Candle in the Wind one more
time?" John in the same band. OW! I think *that* would definitely be a band
that would break up *before* it got formed. Still, if they were clapped in
chains and forced to perform... I could see a certain guitar neck getting
shoved up more than just a camera lens... :-) ]

2. Then to a question my brother asked me to send you:

Eddie Jobson, the former keyboardist of Roxy Music and Frank Zappa band,
claims that he played in some early incarnation of Rainbow. That would be
around 1975/76, since he claims it was before he joined the FZ band in 1976.
So was this before or after Tony Carey? For how long did he stay in Rainbow
(some days/weeks/months)? Who were in Rainbow then? Did they make any
recordings or gigs?

3. One thing that keeps bothering me. The abbreviations. I know why we use
them. I'd rather write WWRWR&WWRWR than *When We Rock We Rock and When We
Roll We Roll* if I was to write about that DP compilation. It's just that
some abbreviations, like RG, are not that self evident (Rory or Roger). And
every time I see IG it takes a second before I remember we are not likely
talking about Mr. Osterburg a.k.a. Iggy Pop :-)

The following are my own impressions of the Paris July 1985 show. It was
recently rebroadcast on German TV, which resulted in the video now appearing
at a North American record show near year (and how I got a copy).

The audio on the show was less than desirable - all you could practically
hear were keyboards and drums. Ian sounded hoarse, and he forgot the words
to Perfect strangers (excerpts of this same moment can also be found on
"Heavy Metal Pioneers" video), and a special raunchier version of Knocking
at Your Back Door was heard. Nice to hear Ritchie play "Difficult to Cure /
Beethoven's 9th" (a Rainbow staple) at the show, along with Ian's "JC
Superstar" interlude in Strange Kind of Woman.

Now that most of the "new-ness" has wore off, maybe allot of our
opinions of ABandOn has changed...not necessarily for the worst either.
I would say that's normal for a dedicated fan to deem an album excellent
when it first comes out. Sometimes something can be gained by putting a
record (CD! there I go dating myself again) down for a bit and then
re-visiting it. My opinion is both albums are wonderful- and I know of
very few guitarist who could fill the Blackmore void as well as Steve.
But to me, his most outstanding quality is not so much his guitar
virtuoso, but the new life he has brought the other band members in this
line-up. Certain freedoms the band members were not capable of having
with Ritchie. Several times- listening to both albums I find myself
saying "gosh it sounds like Jon is having such a good time with this
one". If I had to choose a favorite- yes, it would have to be _|_. One
big reason for that is -the almost "Rap" style of vocals Ian has brought
into the band...is this integration with current sounds (Mf**x!TV)
necessary? For me it's only tolerable because it's DP. (Mr. Blackmore
would have kept this from happening -I bet) And then there's Seventh
Heaven.......Gotta love that one.
