Subject: Re: Smoke On My Megamix

Well, I suppose it's about time I got off my butt and contributed to this
list! Big "Hi!" to Dean, to those that I know from elsewhere, and to those
that I don't know yet.

Daniel was asking about the "Smoke on My Megamix" single. He said:

"In the middle of the 80's a friend of mine found a single called "Smoke
On My Megamix". The "song" started with "Smoke" and then went through
some Purple classix like "What's Going On Here", "Strange Kind Of Woman"
and "Black Night". I think "Demon's Eye" was there too.
The funny thing with this single was, that the music wasn't played by a
cover band. Some DJ had mixed together the original Deep Purple versions
to form a somewhat entertaining set.

Now I wonder: Does anyone know the background for this single? When was
it released? By what record company? Who did the mixing? Was he/she a
Purple fan or just a DJ? Is it a rarity? Did the same guy do any other
similar mixes?"

It is an official release - it was a 7-inch single released in 1985 by EMI
in the UK. Catalogue number PSR-474. Apparently they had re-released four
older Purple singles, to cash in on the group reforming. You collected
special stickers from these singles - if you sent all 4 to EMI, they sent
you back this disco-mix single.

I'd never heard of it till I found it at a record fair a few years ago. It
was in mint condition, and dirt cheap - 2 UK pounds. When I played it, I
realised why it was in mint condition - it was dreadful! Shortly afterwards,
I traded it for to a mad-keen DP collector for some tapes.

However, I've never seen any copies of it since then - so it must be
relatively rare. I think that to a collector it would be worth much more
than what I paid for it.

My copy was in a plain sleeve - the guy that I traded with thought there was
a picture sleeve version around, too. I don't remember if the record label
said anything about who did the mixing.

There is a bootleg CD around called "Smoke On My Megamix". This includes
both sides of the 7-inch single, as well as rarer DP material such as "Fire
Ice & Dynamite", "Slow Down Sister", and some supposedly rare BBC tracks,
which are just the album versions with a DJ speaking over the intro. It's
probably easier nowadays to find that bootleg than to find the original
single.

About Dean's comments:

>different and I found the addition of former DP bandmates Lord and

Dear Dean:

I couldn't agree with you more on viewing S&M as a Rainbow album. If you
listen to S&M right after Rainbow's "Bent Out of Shape", it certainly
fits great as a follow up. The production of both albums is clear and
clean (certainly Roger Glover's touch). And I think it featured what we
could call the ideal Rainbow line up in the Joe Lynn Turner era.

On the Joe Lynn Turner topic. In the context of his style, I think he's
an excellent vocalist, and an outstanding artist. I think he has gotten
way too many unfair critics. Maybe this is due to the fact that some
people compare him with Ian Gillan in the Deep Purple context. But
nobody compares his work with Rainbow to that of Ronnie James Dio. I
think the differences there were way bigger than those in S&M with Deep
Purple. But what happened? Rainbow, as whole, made a change in their
musical style, so Joe's style fit in well.

Finally, I think that Jon Lord would have made a terrific job in any of
Rainbow's line up. Does any one know if he was ever approached by
Ritchie on this subject? Just imagine if this dream Rainbow line up
would have ever come true:

Ronnie James Dio, vocals.
Ritchie Blackmore, guitar.
Roger Glover, bass.
Cozy Powell, drums.
and The Master, Jon Lord, on Hammond organ.

Any other suggestions on dream line ups Dean? This is a real funny game.
Please send us some of yours!

Dream lineups:
OK, Eduardo, here you go:

For DP, I feel that Mk2, 3, and current are all the top line-ups for
different reasons. Any one of them would please me fine.

For Rainbow, it would have to include Blackmore from before his mellow-out
period, say circa 1976. Give me Dio, too, because he could really rock out
with Blackmore. For a living drummer, put Vinny Appice in the kit. On bass,
Bob Daisley, because I like his hard edge. For keyboards, Jon Lord would be
great, but Blackmore would have to have a special "don't be bossy" policy
toward him to let him shine. Failing Mr. Lord, I would try and recruit Colin
Towns. I always liked his work with Gillan and he even did some music for a
children's series based on Beatrix Potter's books (Peter Rabbit, et al.)
that was hauntingly brilliant.

Now, if Mr. Gillan were to go nuts and have a rock'n'roll send-up the way
Screaming Lord Sutch could put on, I would want no less than the rest of DP
in the band, because they're all professionals that can rock any house, and
then put Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, and Stevie Wonder in
there to get things *really* going. If I could only have one great from way
back when, I'd make it Little Richard. I recently saw his whooo-ness perform
here in Dallas, and what a show it was! The man is 65 and he can still get a
crowd on its feet.

Now for a themed lineup: how about a band made up of the most long-suffering
players in rock? These would be the quiet, polite guys that always had to
put up with others that got more spotlight than they did. It would be: Roger
Glover on bass (umpteen years of playing with Blackmore is the reason behind
his purple heart), Bill Ward on drums (a nicer guy is hard to find and he
almost had to try out to play drums for the Black Sabbath reunion), George
Harrison and Rory Gallagher on guitars (George was the quiet Beatle and lost
his wife to Eric Clapton: Rory Gallagher had to fight his way into playing
rock and blues and had a liver failure. Another set of nicer guys you never
met) and John Paul Jones on keyboards (one of the few keyboard guys I can
think of that had a back-seat type of personality). They would all let
anyone who wanted to take turns singing.

Their opposites, the overcharged ego band: Ritchie Blackmore on guitar,
Lemmy Kilminster on bass, Keith Emerson on keyboards, David Lee Roth
singing, and Carl Palmer on drums. Roth and Blackmore alone would be worth
the ticket price to see them on stage together. I doubt they'd play music
very long before they started swinging at each other...

Just a few thoughts... what are yours?

hi!!
Is anyone else from Australia??? Why wont Purple, or any other good band
tour down here???? I know that they did about 20 years ago, but i am
only 16 and have not had a chance to see any of my favorite bands

Purple, Sabbath, zeppelin, Floyd, Cream, The Doors) live as they are
either broken up, or wont come here.
I was born in the wrong generation and everyone says that i am living in
the past by the music i listen to. Long Live Rock "n" Roll !!!!!
Is anyone else from Australia and frustrated by the lack of quality
bands we get over here??????/ I can only hope that Deep Purple keep
producing live albums for release over here.
That's another thing, if i want to get a purple album, i have to get it
shipped in from overseas!! That costs heaps more, even for the old ones.
i had to order Burn and Stormbringer. Why dont they get shelved over
here???? I dont think i will be able to purchase Jon Lord's new solo
album, as it wont be released over here!! Frankly, it SUX!!!!

Afrikaans speaker I have translated these myself, it looses something!
Had a freind who complied a database of all his cd's etc completely in
Afrikaans, translated it all so we could all enjoy listening to the
classics:

Snelweg Ster
Vreemde Tipe Vrou
Rook op die Water
Vuurbal

Tot Later

[Ed- I can figure out 1, 3, and 4. What the heck is "Vreemde Tipe Vrou?" Let

In response to Ilija Gospodinov's catlogue review way back at issue
#11
- I parralel with you on each album with the exception of Burn and
Stormbringer....Burn. I differ only in that Glenn Hughes was very much
involved with the writing of most the songs on the album, but wasn't
able to recieve credit do to his prevailing contract with Threshold
records. True, Stormbringer does have more of a "funky" sound, and we
all know it's very strong in Glenn's blood (funk and soul), but I
believe it was only Ritchie who has protested the albums sound, not the
rest of the members. If you think about what was popular mainstream
music here in the States back then, I would guess the band was making an
attempt to update thier sound to the times...so to speak. I concider it
an interesting fusion. And yes, Slaves and Masters can be appreciated
much more if you concider it a follow-up to Strait Between the Eyes!

Back in DPD #5 I asked for some translations for the band members just in
case they came through your neck of the woods and needed to communicate in
the local vernacular (talk the way the locals do). Well, below are some
stock DP phrases done over for East Texas drawl. East Texas drawl is an
unwritten language, so for best effects, you'll need to pronounce the
phrases out loud to understand them best. For those that signed on after #5
went out, just go and read that issue at the website or use the phrases
below to translate into your own language. And now the East Texas language
guide for Deep Purple:

IAN GILLAN: Can we have everything louder than everything else?
"Could ya'll make it louder'n'ell? Thank ya'll."

May I please have some more hard liquor?
"Ya'll got any more likker Ah kin borrah?"

Have you any throat spray I can borrow?
"Ya'll got anything for this sore throat of mine?"

What are the words to the song I am singing?
"Ya'll, Ah plum fergot them words fer this song."

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
"YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!!!!"

ROGER GLOVER: I am a producer. Show me to the mixing board.
"Ah'm th' perdusir. Fetch th' mixin' board fer me. Thank ya'll."

Where did the rest of the band go? I want to join them.
"Where th'hay-ull the rest of them fellers git ta?"

RITCHIE BLACKMORE:
I just fired my singer. Please get Joe Lynn Turner on the telephone.
"Ah jist shot another singer with uppity notions. Git me someone what knows
how to behave hisself on the tellee-o-phone afore'n Ah shoots *you* next."

Get that camera away from me or I will ram my guitar up the lens.
"Git that fool contraption outta my face or Ah tell yew what!... Ah'm fixin'
ta cram this here gee-tar up'n that yankee lens of your'n!"

I told you to get that camera away from me.
"Some folks... Boy, Ah tell yew what!"

If you can glue my passport back together, I'll continue the tour.
"Adios, amigos! Ah'm a-gonna varmoose!"

DAVID COVERDALE: Ooooo-whoa-ohhh!
"WAAAAAAAHH-HOOOOO!"

'ere's a song for ya!
"Ah'm a-gonna sing a song!"

JON LORD: Anyone want to hear "Fur Elise" one more time?
"Ya'll don't mind none. Ah'm a-gonna play somethin' fancy fer a while..."

How does my solo end? I seem to have forgotten.
"Consarn it! Ah cain't end mah solo!"

IAN PAICE: I want to play the drums.
"Lemme at them thar drums."

Please show me to the drums.
"Where them drums? Lemme at them thar drums."

OK, one more beer, then I play the drums.
"Awright, Ah'll knock back another Shiner, then Ah want at them drums!"

STEVE MORSE: (He seems to be the big, funny guy that doesn't say much. He
probably could get by with simple gestures and the occasional solo.)

So what phrases does DP need to know in your part of the world?

Where are you?
If your email ends in a country code, like .br, .se, .my, or any other code,
I've got you placed according to your country. If you don't really come from
.nl, for example, but hail from .za or .es, let me know. If you have a .com
or .net address and haven't let me know where you are yet, please do. I'd
like to get some neato statistics together and need your help in this. 73 of
you still need a country designation.

If you don't send in pretty soon, I may have to do something drastic and
assume that you're from the USA. Folks in the USA may not care, but I know
it can be a big deal to some who consider folks in the USA to be
foreigners...

So where are you? Let me know!
