DEEP PURPLE DIGEST #1 In this issue: Welcome. Press Release Album Reviews Links Other Stuff ___________________________________________ Welcome to the list. OK, you deserve a little more than just that. Let me just say that we already have 10 (count 'em) subscribers and more are arriving by the hour(s). Yay! The main purpose of the DPD is, of course, to discuss Deep Purple. Behave yourselves and your posts will be accepted. Rules can be found at the website (see link at bottom of digest) at the "List Info" page. Please do take some time to visit the site and let me know what you think. I want YOUR contributions to the site, for the betterment and benefit of DP fans all around the www! (More on that down below.) A word of caution- I tend to go for comic effects. All in good fun, but do bear it in mind when you read my handiwork. Yours in Purpleness, Dean Webb Moderator and Grand Muckety-Muck of Deep Purple Digest dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com ___________________________________________ DEEP PURPLE EMAIL LIST NOW AVAILABLE For those who had been wanting an email list for the discussion of the rock band Deep Purple, the wait is over. DEEP PURPLE DIGEST (mailto:dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com) officially came into being at 5:00 PM, Thursday, August 27, 1998. List owner Dean Webb issued a statement indicating his desire to "take good care of his subscribers," and other high-minded intentions. The list will be available only in digest mode, to allow for careful, painstaking moderation and to limit overall mailbox clutter to just a few messages per week. List members will be encouraged to offer up their contributions, many of which will find their way to the list's website, at http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Balcony/8910. The website already has an area prepared to recieve reviews and ratings of Deep Purple's albums, in order to better serve the Deep Purple online fanbase at large. Although the list is not sponsored or endorsed by any band member, past or current, and although the list is not formally affiliated with any other web sites, list owner Webb is undaunted. "Internet users don't really care too much about that," he offered. He further indicated that, although he doesn't seek official endorsement, he would like the best endorsement of all: a good-sized number of list members, many active in contributing, and the satisfaction of as many subscribers as possible. Webb's final statement was, "It won't be anything without the fans! Come on and let's make this a success!" ___________________________________________ Album Reviews In the Critic's Corner part of the DPD home page (link at bottom), there are a lot of empty spaces. I would like to solicit your reviews to fill in those spots. I took some of the jucier albums, I admit, but there are plenty more for you to get "first review" rights on. I figure on putting down blurbs from the first five reviews submitted per album on the page itself, then all other blurbs on a separate, linked web page. Not every album is everyone's absolute favorite, so I know ones we know and love will get panned by someone else who can't stand the thing. In fairness to the positive side of life, I'd like to have a good (8-10 point) review be the first one on each album. Let me give an example: I don't consider "Come Taste the Band" to be worth anything more than a 5 or 6 (bear in mind that's comparing it to other DP albums- the record is a fine body of work and infinitely preferable to atonal opera, for example). I think Bolin's work is great on it and that each band member does a fine, professional job, but that the mix just doesn't gel. I know from at least one email address that we have a self-proclaimed Bolin-head out there. If that person really loves CTTB, and considers it worthy of an 8-10 point review, that person should be the first review mentioned in the HTML code. My 5-6 pointer may come right after it, but each album deserves a good word from its apologists to get things started off right. I will have a section there for list members. Just being a DPD subscriber is DP content enough to justify a link from the site. Feel free to link your page to the DPD site, as well. Just don't pull art/text/whatever else I stick there to your sites in absolute links. Copy what you need and have it hosted on your own web server. One word about copying: don't do anything dumb, jerky, stupid, or mean with the graphics I have there. The cover art from the albums is freely accessible and the band photos I used as backgrounds on some of the pics there were ones already in my posession that I scanned in from album covers or DP books. I didn't make a nickel off of them, didn't rip anybody off, so don't you do that, either. (I trust you all, but there's always going to be somebody out there... this is just to make him feel guilty and give those of us who behave the higher moral ground.) Dean Webb DPD Grand Poobah and Moderator dplist(at-a-domain-named)geocities.com ___________________________________________ Other Stuff If you generate *original* art (that rips-off no one, see above comments), prose, poetry, MIDI files, whatever else that can fit on a web page, lemme know. Submissions can be sent to the list, but non-textual stuff will be posted to the site, rather than the list. Stuff I can't accept includes gross stuff, nekkid people (that's nudity for those that did not grow up in the Southern USA), MP3's (unathorized ones are RIGHT OUT and autohorized ones are available elsewhere -- why be redundant?), and unauthorized stuff that could wind up getting me sued if DP or other interested parties found out and got mad enough. Back on the positive note, DP were/are/will be a wonderful catalyst for artistic expressions for themselves and for their fans who, although they may not necessarily have a gold or platinum record to their credits, can still compose art of all kinds around the muse that spoke through the band Deep Purple. Be silly, be serious, be sarcastic, be altruistic. Whatever floats your DP-related boat, just put it down on email and send it on in!
