Chapter Questions
Here are all the questions for the chapters, as they were assigned in class.
First Six Weeks
Chapter 1
1. Name 5 areas that were centers of agriculture by 5000 BC.
2. What happened to the world population when farming became widespread? Why?
3. Name 5 characteristics of civilization.
4. Which do you suppose developed first, religion or writing? What evidence do you have to justify your answer?
5. Why would a system of record keeping accelerate technological change?
Chapter 2
Compare and Contrast
Consider the four river valley civilizations: Egypt, Mesopotamia, Indus, and China. In the exercises below, you'll be asked to rank them in order of best/most sophisticated to worst/least sophisticated. Include a sentence explaining your position on each civilization's placement in your comparison. Be prepared to verbally justify your answers. If we don't have enough information about a civilization, do not include it in the comparison.

1. Describe what made the Hittite victory over the Egyptians possible. What destroyed the Hittite civilization?
2. How did Jainism and Buddhism integrate and conflict with Hinduism? Give examples.
3. Why were the Minoans and Phonecians able to be such successful traders?
4. Which legacy of the Hebrews is more lasting, their government or religion? Justify your answer.
5. There are no Egyptian records specifically mentioning the Exodus of the Hebrews. Why do you suppose that happened? Does this refute Hebrew records or require more investigation? Justify your answer.
